  1. It’s the left side, like a metallic gray color. thanks for all the tips, my new found workshop is coming together nice so hopefully I’ll get to this soon. I also want to repair some plastics on my duc the 20 year old idiot in me at the time thought some cheap ass flush mounts would look good🙄
  2. Here’s my sticker to add to your database. Very curious if it’s already been reported. I’m in Layton Ut, bought it just under a year ago in Logan Ut. But in the saddle bag full of extras there was a box of parts with a Layton address. I’d love to know some history of the bike. Took me a little time and lots of info from this forum but I got everything working as it should except for maybe CB (don’t have headset) and cruise is intermittent. At some point a Couple named Lonnie and Aileen owned it as their names were painted on the trunk. Anyway it’s an 87 VR, color is cream and like a metallic grey with metallic orange pinstripe. Mileage 31946.
  3. Thanks RDawson. I did a search but wasn’t coming up with any relevant hits. Gotta figure out this new forum interface.
  4. Hey Strangers! Been a while since I checked in, fall came and I checked out. Hope you all had a great holiday season and are keeping busy in the off season, which brings me to my topic. I have no idea when why or how but as I was working on cleaning the garage this past weekend I noticed the horizontal part of my fairing has a complete clean break in two. The horizontal location of the piece that goes from the lower behind the radiator and up where the vents are. My first instinct is to fiberglass it back together. But any suggestions are encouraged. I’m still dumbfounded on what caused it and when. Rock maybe?
  5. That’s exactly it. I don’t want to plan a trip around gas stations. I wanna take the long way around but not have to worry.
  6. No but seriously I appreciate all the info. And like I said, starting in Salt Lake it’s really easy to get into the middle of nowhere quick. Plus I learned some stuff I otherwise wouldn’t have known, so it’s all a win.
  7. so when I said “ironbutt” I didn’t know the full context and the association. I just meant longer...further...than what I was ever used to on a sport bike. After looking at their website I see some appeal to some of the milestones but I like to stop and look around.
  8. I haven’t gotten to installing mine yet, walk by them many times a day. My DD Expedition took priority and I had to replace its transmissions lead frame sensor thinger. Happy to say after 4hrs work and $250 out of pocket rather than $1400.00 at the stealer it’s running better than I can ever remember. It was a lot of work finding and procuring the part though.
  9. I got my springs from Amazon Progressive 11-1112 pr/fork spring kit (11-1112) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008PCBO3W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_noxpFb0QJAWXF oil I bought from progressive directly.
  10. Thanks for all the tips and ideas. I don’t want something permanent, but something semi like the hitch mount with a quick clip for pump and fuel line may be a cool mod to dabble with in the future. Xtra terrestrial highway and the surrounding ways to get there is pretty much why this topic came up. Second ESP event today 🕳🤷*♂️. I wanted to go south from Wendover and maybe hit rt6 or 50 west. The problem with planning your trip around gas stations is that you’d need to backtrack to see some sights on your list (shantytown, Fort Ruby). And it’s a craps shoot if a station is still active or open in these teeny western towns. I wasn’t planning on sanctioned iron butt rides...yet. I travel from SLC to Vandenberg and it’d be fun to take the back roads. From what I’ve read most are really starting to look around the 120 mile mark. That’s not very far. So far I’m averaging 75 to a half tank. The red slanted jug mentioned, I had seen on revzilla I think, looked good, but sketchy storing it in the hard case, but you guys say it works I’ll play along. I like the oil can idea too, disposable, or give awayable without any personal loss. Then of course MSR bottles. When You start linking these backroads together it’s easy to get further and further away from civilization and I don’t want to make a bee line for the next station. Add in adverse weather like a headwind and forget about it.
  11. Well I’m glad I decided to be lazy this weekend and have the ability to cash in on these tips coming in. Is this a procedure best done on the center stand or on a Jack? I haven’t even opened the box yet so I did not look at any directions yet. Anyone know of a video out there of this swap?
  12. I thought through a search I’d find more hits but apparently not. Any good suggestions for carrying auxiliary fuel? Where I live, I can start some pretty extreme remote stretches no more than 30 min from my door. I’m wanting to start some iron butt weekends but for sure don’t want to be walking. Puc I know you were called out in the chat room albeit you weren’t present. I do also have a Markland hitch that I took off when doing other maintenance and didn’t reinstall as I suspected it wasn’t mounted correctly to begin with. That may be a decent place to mount a jerry can?
  13. I was going to wait for this to be an off season project, now I don’t think I can resist. And since the weather is predicted to be in the triple digits for as far as the forecast can see, I think I’ll dive into this sooner than later and enjoy not bottoming the forks out all fall long. This was a total impulse buy last week while drinking and reading about motorcycles online...next thing I know I had confirmation emails coming in that I spent more money on motorcycles 🤷*♂️
  14. Two more tips that really helped me are using a condiment bottle to dispense into the MC and sealing the bleed screw threads with some lithium grease to prevent sucking ambient air through the bleeder.
  15. I just had a fight with my 87 rear system. I didn’t run into the specific problem you’re having but I went out and bought a mitivac to do the job myself instead of begging the wife or kids to come help. It worked really well. Are you also bleeding in the correct sequence? Front left caliper, rear caliper, high point? I wasn’t doing it correct at first. https://www.harborfreight.com/mityvac-vacuum-pump-39522.html?cid=paid_google%7C%7C%7C39522&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=&utm_content=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5tWniJqJ6wIVXD2tBh2GBQDrEAQYAiABEgIknPD_BwE https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?146323-Rear-caliper-dragging/page2
  16. The more I think about it, I don’t understand why you would care to have a relay if wired to the acc terminal.
  17. sorry if I misspoke. Mine does not have a relay inline for the driving lights, (PO installed) maybe I should install one.
  18. Eliminate that relay. Wire either to the auxiliary terminal or fused direct to battery. (If you go direct to battery it wont be switched by the ignition key so you could forget to turn them off and drain your battery) You can also use a toggle switch that has an integrated indicator light for future switches.
  19. I’ll take your old one if you wanna offload it. Did you buy the whole module or just a board?
  20. Do you have some weird jumper wire going to the headlight harness? I really wish I had taken pictures and notes when I tore my 87 apart from all the bull**** the PO had going on. Mine had an odd jumper eliminating the low beam and that caused the headlight error. Even spent 30 bucks on a replacement headlight before I figured it out. Added a resistor to the sensor wire and that fixed the battery warning.
  21. Haven’t had the shifting issue you refer to but have had trouble gettin the starter to engage. Is it normal to only start in neutral? I swear I have been able to start it once or twice in gear so long as the kickstand was up. These interlocks are new to me, my duc will drive home on the starter if the battery lasts.
  22. refer to service manual page 7-82 also if you haven’t performed the aforementioned re-soldering that may be your issue. https://www.yamahaventure.nl/pdf/servicemanualxvz1300.pdf
  23. Thanks all. I thought it was pretty high as well, but given the popularity of these bikes and being prime season I wasn’t sure what someone could get away with.
