So, it's only when it's Cold? Is this the first time you've used that oil? Are you measuring the oil with the bike straight up and down or on the side stand? It's not energy conserving oil is it (small circle on the back of the bottle lower right hand side should tell you)?

Squealing/whining sound
gibvel replied to SilvrT's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, Venoms aren't really a loud tire. Probably is something else then. Hopefully your description will help someone else pinpoint it. -

What brand of tires are you running? How loud is it? I've heard some pretty loud tires at a steep angle before. -

Sure it's not tire noise? I know mine make more noise in tight curves. Hard to tell without listening to it. -

Don, you da man!! -
Yes, all the speedometers are inaccurate. Most motorcycles are. The 2nd gens is off, roughly, 7%. I think it has something to do with keeping us hotrodders from driving so fast. Here's a device that corrects that problem: http://www.speedohealer.com/eng/intro.htm

Can't you get this addressed under warranty? If not by the place you purchased it from, by some other shop.- 48 replies

"I" basket conclusion
gibvel replied to labeldave's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The 1st gens. may have the whine. I just think there's enough plastic around the clutch housing that keeps the sound dampened. Bill already proved that the sound is greatly lessened by removing the windshield on the RSTD so it seems that it's a reflection of sound. It would be interesting to make a cover with some sound deadening material in it and try that to see if it decreases the sound. As far as your question about moving the sound, it will still whine at the same RPM range it will, however, change what speed the sound is located at as the RPM range will be higher at a certain speed than it was before.- 48 replies

You think they would have caught something like that when they changed the shock out. Is there another shop nearby, that you could take it to and have it checked out?
-
Only thing I might suggest are the leveling links from Diamond R. That would raise the rear up some. Unless your vertically challenged and then you might not like that idea. Oh, and you might want to stop taking those high speed jumps too.
-
Probably a stupid question but: Have you tried putting air in the shock? Little cap on the right side (sitting on the bike) just behind the drivers seat. Don't use a gas station pump on it but you could use a bicycle tire pump (preferably a progressive pump or a good hand pump from a motorcycle shop). Max pressure 50 PSI.

Don't know if they make and don't know if you would want a "One tool does all" I figure that a wrench that would work over the entire range required for this bike would not be as accurate on some ranges as others. I actually have 3 wrenches. You'll probably find that the ones for the lower torque range will have to be in inch pounds (quick math should get you where you need to be). My

Lighter plug

Yeah, What thom440 said. That is originally where the headset cord exited. Had a rubber grommet that the cord when through stuck in that hole. Definitely an after market item. -

egleeye, yes, we are talking 2nd gen speedos. This unit will not work on the 1st gens as they have a mechanical speedo and the 2nd gens. have an electronic speedo. However, you can find out more info on the Speedo Healer here: http://www.speedohealer.com/eng/intro.htm

Battery Sensor
gibvel replied to MikeM8560's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe that, when I helped the guy put the new battery in my 89 before buying it, the sensor was included with the new battery and just clipped right on. The battery is a Yuasa. You may try and see if thats the case. -
I think mine calibrated out to -6.5 and I think Don mentioned, in another post that his was something like -7 so, no, they're not all the same. However, I may have to re-calculate because I did it at 80 and they say, in the instructions, to get the reading at 60. But, yes, -5.5 sounds like it's feasible and could very easily be correct for your bike.

Those hoses......yeah those...........
gibvel replied to gibvel's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Already had the carbs adjusted. If anything they are adjusted on the rich side. Was concerned about going down in altitude and didn't want them to lean out too much if I did. Thanks for the info Goose. I'll give all that a try!!- 6 replies

Those hoses......yeah those...........
gibvel replied to gibvel's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Okay, then what's the best way to track down a vacuum system leak..... assuming it's not at the boots (I'll check them as well). Reason being, ever since I got this bike, it's had a problem on deceleration. Can't really call it a backfire cause it doesn't sound like gun fire. It's more like a gurgle or loud rumble or a series of small pops, while I'm down shifting (don't know if that makes much sense). I plugged the AIS once and that kind of took the edge off but didn't get rid of it. I synced the carbs and that doesn't make much of a difference. It does have some fairly loud after market pipes on it and K&Ns. I'm wondering if it could be a leak somewhere either in the hoses or somewhere else in the system. I did take your advice and check the port plugs and both of them, if you pull on the end (where it looks like two pieces were put together) look as though they come apart slightly. I don't think there is a hole or that they are all the way through though. I replaced one and tried to fix the other. Didn't seem to help much.- 6 replies

Nawww, that's good information to know as well. You probably helped, at least, one person who didn't know at what speed the idle should be set.
