Front axle question.
gibvel replied to BigLenny's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Eck, My service specs say 56 ft-lbs for the Axle bolt. -
Is it possible that MikeWA has the quick release bolts on his saddle bags? Or would these interfere with the gas can going all the way down? Do you two gentlemen have the modified (quick release) bolts instead of the stock saddlebag bolts? Curiouse because this looks like a good idea and I have the modified bolts. Just a thought.

Is it still under warranty, perchance? Have you had the ignition switch replaced? Yes, things dropped in the vicinity of the ignition switch can and love to fall right down behind the radiator. They usually hit the top of the fan and slide one way or the other. The guy that replaced the ignition switch for the PO of my bike dropped an ignition switch bolt and it ended up sliding down the fan and lodging between the frame member and the radiator. After his riding and my riding from Amarillo to Loveland it had vibrated a hole in the radiator. Just bought the bike and I have to have the radiator fixed... oh joy. Doesn't bother the guy that he has a missing bolt that didn't fall through and he can't find. Guess it wasn't his bike so no big deal. The only thing I can think that you might be able to do (keep in mind I'm not near my bike and can't physicalize this) is to take one of those telescopic mechanics mirrors, put it behind the fan and shine a light on it to see if you can see something through the fan that might be making the noise. Don't know if you can shine a flashlight through the radiator and see anything but that's another idea. Good luck finding out what's making the noise!!

Yes, but, again, some have had issues with sidewalls cracking. Mine have been fine, however and they are fairly new. No problems with E3s that I know of. Most like them, some say they are noisier than the Venoms and some say the Venoms are better in wet. As for the Commander II they are pretty newly introduced so I don't know that there is info one way or the other yet. The Commanders were a favorite of several on this site though.

2006 venture dies while running 70-75
gibvel replied to slowspecv's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Does the engine sputter and die, as in not getting enough fuel or air, or does it just flat quit? Does most or all of the electrical go out or does the engine just die and the electrical stay on? It it just quits I would suspect electrical... Maybe the ignition switch but I've never really heard of these symptoms with the ignition switch. -
iridium or standard
gibvel replied to Tkosanic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Longer life and less changes. Goose did some experimentation with standard and iridium plugs once and there was no difference in performance or MPG with the iridium over the standard. So the only advantage is that you don't have to change them as often. -
Installed K&N Air filters, performance changed
gibvel replied to VstarAl's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Wondering if he has to adjust the needles. He says highway speeds are good but 40mph in 4th is fairly low on the RPM range and can't be much main jets going on. Have the carbs ever been worked on or are they stock, including the idle mixture screws, from the factory? Have you even set the floats? The bike is set to run lean from the factory and some have found that the floats are quite off as well which could add to the lean condition. Then putting the K&Ns on just leaned it out more. -
Man I hope you're right!!

Competitive with whom? All the other touring bikes are above 20K to start. The Voyager is the lower priced. So even above 20K they are in among the major players (GW, Victory CCT, Ultra Classic). I would guess, if they do have a new RSV, that they would come in above 20K but below the others and offer the CB etc. included for that price.

Weird Verizon Wireless bills.... scammy smelling?
gibvel replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Watering Hole
One thing you can do, to check for scam emails, is hover your pointer over one of the links and look at the lower bottom left hand side of the screen. If the the link listed there doesn't start with www.verizon or haver verizon right after the http then it's probably a scam. You can even test this with the links on the Venturerider.org site. -
This is, basically, what the Mic Mutes (the system you wire in) the guys are talking about does. As I understand it, if you want to use the IC you press and relese the PTT button and the it opens the mics on the IC only. Repeat the process to turn the mics back off. If you want to talk on the CB you toggle the mics on them press the ptt button down as usual. Someone, with Mic Mutes, correct me if I'm wrong. Goose, Is that with the standard dosage or is that also the case with a higher dosage treatment? I've never heard that with the recommended dosage the plugs foul. I have heard, however, that with a larger dosage, say 3/4 to a full can per tank or pouring it straight into the carbs, the plugs do foul. Have you ever experienced that situation and what did you find if s o?

From what I understand (though I've never tried it) if you get them warm they're a lot easier to pull off. I was told to set the bike in the sun for awhile and warm them up. Just FYI for others who haven't done theirs yet.

The charge voltage sounds about normal. At least that's about where mine sits. After charging the battery let it sit for a couple hours then see what the voltage is. My guess is a bad battery cell. I've had it happen with a less than year old battery and my son-in-law had a bad battery less than 3 months after install. NOTE: Just checked the service manual and it says the charging system should read 14V at the battery @ 5,000 rpm. not 14.5

Testing coils off a bike
gibvel replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yeah, you're right. Wonder how closely they resemble each other though. If the principle is the same the procedure may be the same between the two. Just a thought. -
Testing coils off a bike
gibvel replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
V7Goose was in the process of testing coils. He had asked for people to send them their supposed "Bad" coils to see if he could check resistances and make some determinations. I don't know if he had/has a test procedure for testing them or not. May want to shoot him a PM if he doesn't get to this post. -
unopenable saddlebag lid?
gibvel replied to yuckly's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Make sure you don't get any of that loctite on any of the ABS plastic. I will eat the ABS. -
It's the select and reset button for the odometer. Page 3-5 of the manual.

The RSV has none. oldryder, check your other post on this subject as I listed some other possible things to look at.

Have you tried the radio or CB? If so, is there any difference between that and the iPod? I know my MP3 player needs a little amp to increase the signal enough to get any volume out of the system. I use a Boostaroo and it doesn't distort the signal at all. I don't think the RSV has a mute, but something you might want to check is your Fade and see if the audio isn't all faded to the back speakers. I'm also assuming that you're system is set on AUX when you're using your iPod.
