Dash Lights on an '83
OutKast replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
you can get standard 194 dash bulbs at advance. I have them in all my vintage GMs and my wifes Intruder. Wish I could get them into my second gen speedo!! DO IT! no glare. -
The BIG thing is the chrome at the windshield. two screws hold it in from the back (inner fairing) side. after removing the two screws, lift the chrome UP along the windshield. DO NOT PULL OUT FROM THE WINDSHIELD. I do not know how the cross reference to other threads, but go to forum, then under second gen tech for "splitting the fairing" by Freebird.

Rear E3 or Venom
OutKast replied to 1sttenor's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Hve run my E3s for 8k now, cross country with loaded trailer. Have not measured the tread depth, but still look new. Nice ride, handled grooved concrete freeways without tracking, seemed good in the rain. They are very loud in the curves though, overpowering my stock RK pipes. -
You got a second gen? you ever ridden that thing at night out in the country? Mine glare horribly in the windshield. If you make them brighter, you better also create a way to dim them at night.

Purchased my neglected 04 last Nov. with 14k miles on the ODO. Now has over 28k. No whine. Did have the "water pump knock" that ceased after Carb Synch.

shifter fell off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OutKast replied to clav_guy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The same thing the false air cooling fins on the side of your engine are doing. Or the "eybrows" on your fairing. Or the tin "valve cover covers" over the aluminum valve covers! Maybe even the tape deck (although the aux input jack is useful for something). Actually, I have never yet replaced the side cover screw. -
shifter fell off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OutKast replied to clav_guy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Happens all the time. RiderDuke passed this onto me. A "button head" bolt goes into the end of the shaft. There is an almost identical bolt in the side covers under the driver seat. Each side has (2) allen button head bolts. The rear bolts actually head the covers on. The front bolt is just decorative. Borrow the front bolt to get you running. USE LOCTITE. The groove is a grease groove, coat it with grease. Then, just order a new side cover bolt whenever you get to shop. Or borrow one off the other side for a trip to hardware store. -
Check the spacer washer on axle is inbetween the caliper bracket and the swingarm.

Dunlop Elite 3's for the fronts
OutKast replied to padavidj's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have stock size E3 front and rear. Over 7500 miles, cannot visibly see any wear. No traction problems, but I am moderately cautious in the rain. Silent in a straight line, but noise increases as lean angle increases. Very noisy in the twisties. Sorry, know that does not answer your question on running the smaller than stoch tire. -
Grounds. Unhitch trailer from bike. Lights should all still work through ground wire. My Piggy XL the marker lights not grounded. I changed them to LED anyway. Piggy says LED lighting package, but is only tail lights, front markers had peanut bulbs. You must scrape the paint from the frame where you mount the grounds for the tail lights.

We camped at Desert View, near the Watchtower where you took the pics. I hope it is on your route to go north on I-15 out of Vegas. The Virgin River Canyon where I-15 goes through the NW corner of AZ is just AWESOME!!! We camped at the state campground at virgin river. We then hit I-70 through UT on to Denver CO. When the sign says "no services for 108 miles" they are not kidding. Spotted Wolf Canyon is spectatular also. Then in the mountains of Colorado, the bike started lossing power at 9000 ft elevation. Snow on the shoulders at 10,000. Bike would not exceed 55 mph, even full throttle in 4th, on the inclines abovet 11,000 point. It peaks at a tunnel at almost 12,000 ft. Not sure if 4 corners takes you on this routes. Have fun however you go. Don't let sleeperhawk sitesee too much driving through these canyons and mountains. Much trickier than the desert areas. Bubba

Nice. I assume your still riding it? If you have already taken it off the rim, would you measure the inside diameter of the tire? I would like to compare to the inside diameter of my used motorcycle tire, and new tires. Thanks!!

Dunlop Claims MT rim diameter different than CT, who can verify?
OutKast replied to OutKast's topic in The Darksiders
Mr. Big, FACT -the front stock size E2 I removed from my bike stamped "FRONT WHEEL FITMENT ONLY" FACT - the front stock size E3 I installed on my bike stamped "FRONT WHEEL USE ONLY" FACT - The stamping on both these tires is raised letters cast in during production, not "stamped" in after production. FACT - Dunlop states MT rims are a different diameter from CT. FACT - regardless of manufacturer, all CT rim diameters would have to be within a certain tolerance, because we can mount any brand tire on any brand rim. FACT - numerous darksiders express difficulty with getting the CT over the bead. From these facts, my THEORY is (and if you do not know the differance between fact and theory, close this thread NOW!) that only the bead diameter is larger. Now, the process of proving or disproving theorys consists of collecting more facts that prove or disprove beyond a shadow of a doubt. Bringing in additional unrelated conspiracy theories, such as "all stock tired ventures run a rear tire on the front" only diverts our attention away from the TRUE FACTS I am in search of. So, my original question stands, does anyone that cares have access to equipment to verify or dispute Dunlop's claim? FACT - two darksiders have stepped foward and stated they feel bead diameter is larger. -
Dunlop Claims MT rim diameter different than CT, who can verify?
OutKast replied to OutKast's topic in The Darksiders
I agree with you Peg, really hoping to disprove it. But it is also my understanding that there is some trouble with bead seating. I am in search of Truth!!!!! If Dunlop's statement is true, we could compare ANY 15" motorcycle wheel with any 15" car wheel. If someone had access to a dial caliper and a repeatable way to center the wheel, it would be easy. I have a spare rear wheel from a 1200 gl Goldwing, will check tomorrow to see if it is 15". If it is, there is a machinist in my local CMA chapter. If anybody else has a way to research this, please do and see what you find out. -
As a serious CT prospect, I encountered this on Dunlop's website. I was actually looking for real tech info for a friends question why he could not run "front" tire on rear and vice versa. So, do any of your guys have the equipment and a spare rim to actually measure a 15" motorcycle rim and a 15" car rim and report? I think equipment to measure thousandth would be in order. Here is the quote from Dunlop's site: For 15-inch motorcycle replacement tires, never mount on a 15-inch diameter passenger car tire rim. Mount only on a 15 M/C motorcycle rim. These passenger car and motorcycle rims actually differ in diameter. This statement is on this page: http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/infocenter_tiretips.asp?id=27#tip

Hey George - interference from the electric horns feeds through the CB, all the Ventures do it. It may have something to do with the cheap horns that will not stay tuned. Almost all Venture owners that complain of extremely weak horns have one horn (usually the right side one) "shorted" meaning the adjustment screw on the back of the horn is too tight and not allowing the horn to "vibrate". Correcting this lowers the interference but does not get rid of it. Switch to the air horn setup and completely drop the original horns will get rid of the interference. Been out of Wifi for a few days while in Black Hills, SD. Heading home to VA with target date Fri.

2000 miles from home, low clutch hydraulic pressure
OutKast replied to OutKast's topic in Watering Hole
ALL IS GOOD FOR NOW. Found the 8mm bleeder plug. Did not have wrench that small but after taking off fins could use a socket. Bleeder full of air. I believe the high altitude allowed moisture in the fluid to boil off. 7000 ft and high temps. Refilled with fresh DOT4. Seems good. Heading for Grand Canyon.!!!!!! -
In Gallup, NM. Headed to Grand Canyon tomorrow, then on to Los Angelos. Clutch started acting low on pressure. It is NOT slipping. But clutch lever is barely activating clutch. Catching just as soon as it leaves the grip. Fluid is full. I emptied the master cylinder and refilled with fresh DOT. Where is Slave and how do I get to it. What tools will I need, as I may have enough, but want to know before I open it up? Can I easily rebuild both cylinders myself if it comes down to it? Doubt I can find a dealer in LA who can do a 1 day turnaround. Any suggestions?

Friday was 450 miles to Nashville. Caught in a gullywasher on the 440 bypass. Finally got a way overpriced super 8. Saturday. Had waffle for breakfast at hotel. Left out about 8 am Drizzle and overcast till after Cracker Barrel in memphis. Nice weather through arkansas, but lots of trucks. Then like driving into a black hole in Oklahoma. Interstate mostly deserted. Mamma continues to amaze me. Over 550 miles just today on her 86 VS700 intruder, and ready for more. But fast impending darkness pushed us into the KOA. Later

Piggy is stuffed. Last minute decisions driving me crazy. Take this or that. etc. Plan to leave Fri morn hopefully before 10 am.
