  1. Windows 10 in all honesty has been a very big flop /disaster ..and needs a lot of work ..Windows 7 will be here for long time .. Only download Windows 10 from Microsoft .com..you will need valid product key If they would close the program access hole and the background intelligence with diagonal tracking ...Windows 10 would have a good chance at survival . Try Windows 10 with the Firefox internet browser ...you will notice a big improvement To prove that Windows 10 has a problem... access the Command prompt and type in..... ping 127.0.0.1... and hit the enter key ,,,, If you get a reply ...that tells you that there is a program hole that anyone can access your computer from the internet world ..
  2. Over all the years buying fuel for any of my vehicles and that includes any and every bike I have riding since 1964 . I have always found a benefit in better the top grade fuel #1 or premium fuel ... I do know there is a lot of discussion out there the blended or lower grade fuel is just fine ... When you put an engine to work and it has to perform to it's maxium specs you will find that only premium fuel is what works the best . Aviation works best but it has hugh price . Call me stubborn or wrong but I will never buy a blended , unless I run out on road some where and I nave to walk
  3. I repair old bikes and someday when I can afford to retire , that is all I will be doing . I buy older bikes guys tell me , that they are not repairable I have been installing #4 gauge wire from the neg terminal on the battery right to bolts the hold the starter in place . I have found that at least for the most bikes the starter seems to work better drawing less amps when starting . Most the bikes I have working on have been manufactured before 1985
  4. I had a customers 1995 XV1100 Virago in my shop with problem much like that. I was reading 4.7k ohm on the plugs and 5 to 7 k ohms on the plug cap over 9 ohms at each cylinder . The bike system was designed to run on 4.7k ohms on each plug . ( Yamaha specs were to use a non -resistor plug) I ended up going to a new set of plug caps at 4.7k ohms each A new set of non-resistor plugs , problem solved .

  6. I have noticed a ground clearance after the bike has been lowered is 4 1/2 inches . By adding more air pressure with the on board compressor to the rear shock the bike with lift up to a maximum of 7 inches of ground clearance If the installer does not move the original mounting hole , the procedure can be reversed putting the bike back to it's original high by moving the shock lever bolt back to the original spot The bike will then be back to the original factory location and height . To reverse procedure takes about 30 minutes
  7. Check all motor vehicle regulations before beginning THE OWNER OR INSTALLER ASSUMES ALL RISK AND LIABILITY DO THE MATH OF A LEVER SYSTEM BEFORE YOU START THIS DOES WORK This operation should be performed by a certified shop Before beginning set the rear shock to the lowest setting You can drop the bike ( 1 3/8 inches )by bringing the pin of the shock lever mount under the rear swing arm 1/2 inch lower . This bring up the rear wheel about 1 3/8 inch up , and will lower the bike Install a 120/70 R 18 tire in the front , rear tire 150 / 70 R16 ,,tire pressure should be maintained at 40 psi This will give you 5 1/2 inches of room above the rear wheel Front fork pressure 20 psi plus is required to make the lever work ( this equalize the level of the bike ) Depending on operator weight set rear shock pressure 20 psi ( higher psi will raise the bike ) You will have to shorten the side stand 1 inch , if you so not shorten the side stand the bike may fall to the right. Take one inch of the top of the seat This change will let anyone being 5ft 6 inches tall put the feet flat on the ground Overall the bike will be 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches lower
  8. Sorry no pictures , all I can do is tell what all I had to do and I could take a picture now .....steering head , forks , brakes , cleaned up the brake rotors in my metal lathe , speedometer , wire harness , start relay , charging system , clutch basket bushings ,  fuel pump-- connections at the pump , Windshield , removed trailer hitch , new tires , seat . I will be doing Manitoba Safety inspection next week ..

I can assure that there was hardly a bolt left turned .......This is my 4th project bike in 3 years .

My next project bike is a 1966 Honda 125

  9. After 6 months repairing what's needed , I have my 1983 ready to put it on the road . I went front to back on my 1983 XVZ1200 , electrical , mechanical , and a few cosmetic items . This my first Venture , and I do hope it will last the 2021 riding season .
  10. There are many a day through the Winter when the roads are dry and the weather cam ...Back in the 1960's I rode many day when people thought I was nuts ..It always good the run the bike enough to equal the electronics and it keeps all the bearings and the suspension running free .
  11. I have been told to pull the engine because of the gear chatter in the transmission ... I normally would never over fill the engine , but he overfill did stop the gear noise and vibration inside the transmission . I have been servicing bike engines since 1964 , and have never seen a overfill quiet down internal noise .
  12. I have what sounds like transmission gear chatter on my 1983 XVZ1200 ...When I advance the gear shift lever on the down shift position toward 1rst gear the gear chatter goes away ... When shifted the bike into gear the chatter is gone ...I had the bike sitting storage for 3 months , and when I went to move it to my shop to put it up on the lift I noticed a rather larger puddle of oil under the bike ...I needed to run the bike to get it back far side of the shop .. I added 2 litres of oil to the engine to be on the safe side of enough oil to run the engine . With the higher oil level in the engine the gear chatter was gone ...With fresh oil change and 5 litres of oil in the engine the gear chatter is completely gone.. WHEN IS THERE TO MUCH OIL IN THE ENGINE ?? I have done more engines in my lifetime than I can count...Anything from a Kenworth Diesel down the Honda 50cc engine .. I will try adding a 3/4 vent line down to centre stand and then keep and eye on it ....A friend of mine has a complete engine low miles great condition , I just thinking of avoiding labour involved in doing the work .
  13. I just finished changing the front tire on my XVZ1200 ...Installed 120 / 70 R18 ....At 5ft 6 ....I wanted to bring down the front of the bike to put the bike closer to the ground ...It did just that , but it feels like the bike has fallen on its nose ...Now the back end feels high ...Cannot find any 150 /70 R16 for the rear .

    XVZ1200

Hi guys ...I am new to the Venture ( I am learning as I go ) ..............Regarding the 2 punch marks .. 1 Dot 1 punch above the engine number above the at the end of it and the other punch at the end of the engine number below it ..xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx # 2...star I rode a XV1100 Virago for 10 years , wanted a better ride because of the spine injury I have

    XVZ1200

The speedometer registers 168000 , but I found the speedometer cable and housing in poor condition .. My thinking is that it may have more .... I replaced the clutch basket bushings . It runs great , but I did find gear shift linkage problem .. If I need to pull the engine I will .. Compression is good , and the motor is quiet ,only I hear a noise coming from the shaft that runs through the trans to the clutch when it is not in gear .

    XVZ1200

I bought a 1983 XVZ1200 from a friend in late 2019 .. I am going through the bike from the front to the back. I do not ride any bike till I work my way through it repairing as needed . ( it cost many $$$$ ) I have been riding since 1964 and prefer to buy a bike in as is condition then rebuild it . I did notice 2 very different punch marks behind the engine number not sure what the punch marks are for He had a custom built trailer hitch mounted on the rear which I have removed , it was well built and fit the bike nicely .. I have removed the hitch and I am wanting to sell it . I live in Morden , Manitoba
  17. I have been riding since 1964 and have had about every make of bike out there ...upon either trading or buying a different bike I always done a thorough checkup of any bike I decide to ride ...I would never just go out buy a bike and start to ride without a thorough checkup... All makes of bikes have their strong points and some weak points , but never trust when someone says that it is in perfect condition ...Even if you are not a mechanic , there many simple ways of checking the little things that can go wrong when you go out onto the road ...
  18. Safety First Is Always The Better Plan When I installed new Steering Head Bearings I noticed 1/4 inch thick rubber damper cushion above the air clamp ...I will be removing the rubber cushion and using a 1/16 inch rubber washer in its place , it may not do a lot as far lowering the front goes ...I am looking for a progressive set of springs for the forks . There things that others have done to lower the Venture , but I don't want to go to a aggressive format .
  19. I ride in most any weather as long as the roads are clean and safe .....I rode last December , the temperature was a couple degrees above freezing , I rode 2 days in January ...Sometimes it feels better to ride in the cooler temperatures than when it warmer in late fall and very windy ...Some winters we hit the temperature at -35 degrees ...Ride on and be safe ..
  20. Hi;;;Fellow Venture riders ....Here in Manitoba we are at 12 degrees C in the afternoon and 4 degrees C at night ...Plenty of riders out in the afternoon , but very few out at night .. I have decided to pause till spring ...I will be starting my annual maintenance routine ...Starting with new tires oil & filter & new fork oil , cleanup the brake rotors , pads and then check for the little hidden problems that might be creeping up in the spring ....For those who ride into winter .....Keep it Between the Lines and the Rubber Side Down .
  21. LEAKS ARE ALWAYS SIMPLE NEVER EASY (1) With the Engine off (2) Wash the area where the leak is (3) Check fittings or for cracks in the lines ..
  22. I am in the middle of replace the steering head bearings ...I am glad Yamaha left slot for to place a punch above the bearing race to remove the bearing race .... I am 74 years old and 5 foot 6 inches tall and trying to figure out a way of sliding the forks up about 1/4 to 1/2 inch through the steering head ...Which to my thinking would lower the front of the Venture ..Anyone know what effect removing the air support on the front forks would do the front of the forks system ?? I am mounting some R70 series tires on the front and rear . When I first sat on the Venture , I thought that it was far to top heavy for me , but I have sat on some of the other brands and found that they have the same problem in weight / balance that the Venture has .. So what I will do is make the best off and see how it goes .
  23. I have noticed a transmission noise in neutral for a while now ..Have replaced the clutch basket bushings which did help a bit ...Sounds a bit like 2 gears rubbing against each other ..When I shift the transmission into gear the noise is gone , the transmission works fine ...My plans are to leave it for a winter project ..Can this problem get very bad suddenly ?? I did notice some of the gear shift linkage needs replacing ...
  24. Keep it Between the Lines And The Rubber Side Down Thanks Much for this Info ...Have a Great Summer
  25. Thanks what you are saying makes sense ...There also a saying always simple , but not so easy
