Hi ..campfire 12 & .saddlebum thanks for the reply I will send pictures as the project moves along . The project needs to be done right , so it will take some time . At this point I am doing the measuring to make brackets / adapters and digital conversion for the electronics. Looking for a Yamaha tack and speedometer , I know that the 1995 XV1100 Virago has one that could to made to fit ( same size front wheel )

With front off the 83 it is much easier to handle , and not near as top heavy .. I find a 50 - percent difference in a slow speed and parking lot situation . I plan to install a handle bar mount setup . I have done changes like this in other bikes , there are plenty of guys who do ride older bikes and want to have the weight on top gone . i don't know how much the 2012 and newer Yamaha Venture cost in the USA , but here in Manitoba I need to come up with $14000 - $16000 plus I guess for me it comes down to making changes or go to a different bike

I have just finished 11 months of work , started in the front and ended up the rear wheel repair . It runs great , but the only problem is ..I am 74 and 5 ft 6 I am not what I used to be ... any muscle I had... up and went When the bike leans 6 inches past center over it goes , I simply cannot hang on to it I have measured all aspects of the bike fuel tank and engine location ...great Fork angle , and wheel setup Any suggestions

We often talk about moving down south to a warmer climate , but at times like this when this kind of weather happens to the folks down there . I say thank GOD for our winters because they never do the damage that a tornado can do . I went out for a little spin on my Venture today , only 30 mile run , it was cold but the roads were clear ...6 degrees Celius I hope that everyone can stay safe down there

Any of you shooters into the Silencer/Suppressor world?
larrydr replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
I have been fireman guy years past user as a kid , and entered many legit events all sizes of guns/shooters . I think you guys in the USA are fortunate to at least be able to own a firearm without having the government calling you a criminal . I was loading ammo for law enforcement , all was going well , and I was registered and licensed . 2 tears ago I wanted to sell or give away any hardware I had , in doing so I had to de-register , I handed in the forms they had sent me as legit owner , they tryed to arrest me calling me a criminal because they did not know where Manitoba was and could not find any paper work . The people running the registration office had no clue as how big this country is and how many provinces Canada has Then along came activist groups who would scream and yell that all guns kill people . They put no thought to the fact that bad guys do these things not the hardware . Our federal government funds these groups in order to get more votes come election time .. Good luck guys and have fun -
Thanks cowpuc & Marcarl ...The old windings were shorted to ground .. The guy I bought the 83 from said he had the same problem . He took it on 6500 mile trip and often ended up with a dead battery , he carried a spare battery with him . I would like to replace the rectifier ..regulator , the only problem is finding a exact replacement ...any rpm above does not change it to above 13 volts Any order from Yamaha takes 90 days to get here , I may try a alternate from another bike .. I Will have to check the AC volts coming from the stator I have several in stock from other Yamaha models .
-
I did install the upgraded stator ..Altenator ...and new battery I did notice that at about 2000 rpm charging voltage was at 13 volts . I found that current draw on the battery from the rad cooling fans was drawing more power than charging system was putting back into the battery . There no fuses that blew which makes think that charging system is failing . I will re-test the rectifier / regulator ... Am I missing something ??

Here in Manitoba we not near at riding weather . Looking forward to , and do hope to do some riding at the tail end of the month . Here the winter is seldom done till the end of April

I also found that I did like the MAC and Snapon tools great when I did my turn at working for GM ..Ford ...Chrysler . When I signed up with Cummins and Detroit to keep them running I went back to my old Gray tools , I had put away in the shop ... I never throw anything away , only draw back I found that the old Detroit 6V71 head bolts had no extra room around them . I quit the heavey equipement thing in 1977 . Went back to motorcycles

I bought my first tool box with tools in 1961 and have had to upgrade it several times since .. No matter how often you have the number of tools you will need figured out , a job comes along you find out that your tools are to long , too thick or just will not fit . High grade tools from a tool company often fit better . You will soon find out as you fix and ride ......it is the journey that counts not the destination

I have been servicing garage ,shop doors , air craft hanger door since1974 ... I buy the USA made operators mostly and all bearings are in standard inch measurements . Guess what ...the replacement shafts are imported and come in metric measurement and none of the bearings fit . I have had to buy a metal lathe to cut the shaft down to fit the inch measurement bearings . Our government is so bent on pleasing any out of of Canada company They put it own industry in second place , Cheaper always cost more in the long term

In 1980 I was employed by the Tupperware Company in Morden Manitoba ..The company bought a lot tools but they kept on getting lost ..I went to see the plant manager to ask for a tool allowance . for each of the repair crew ...I went to Winnipeg to the Sears , and bought 6 sets of( Craftsman Tools ) tools for $1300.00 and 6 tool boxes and 6 roll cabinets $2400.00 and this did solve the tool problem ...The manager called me to his office to tell me that this tool purchase was saving them money ..Each of the guys had to agree that any tools lost was their expense ........I agree with the comment that craftsman tools are bulky ...I SERVICED GM CARS FROM 1965 --1968,,,CHRSYLER CARS FROM 1968 T0 1971 ,,,FORD CARS FROM 1971 TO LATE LATE 1974 ,,,i DID FIND THAT MAC & SNAP ON TOOLS ARE A MUCH BETTER GRADE OF TOOLS ...OPS..SORRY MY CAPS LOCK IS ON

I brought back to life enough older bikes that did not run that one more would just be another bike . This my 83 Venture ..What I am finding is that just about the time when think you are done one to do repair shows up .

Sometimes when I find that the chassis looks decent on a bike that does not run I will look for another like for a parts bike . I think new bikes are great but I am the kind of guy needs to fix and then ride . That is why I bought the 83 Venture , I knew it would need plenty of work . I had the guy at the inspection shop take a look , he says it will be okay when I am done .

Ever since 1963 I have always bought a bike that does not run . In 1963 found a Harley 45 that the mechanic said that it cannot be repaired .. What I found was the distributor was out 180 degrees , I rode that old Harley for 4 years . If you buy the ones that run good they cost too much , and often when you buy the perfect bike you often are in for a big surprise about a month down the road , something is not right . There nothing that feels better than if you buy the bike that the repair shop says... it is not repairable . Then you spend some time doing the repair and it fires for the first time . I have found that the best thing to free up a rusted tight engine is fish oil .

I had a bike in my shop with a dead ignition It turned out to be a faulty side stand switch and run / stop switch on the handle bar

When I first started the front to back on my 83 Venture I came across some eratic voltage check points . Nothing would test the same one day to the next , I then decided to check the wire harness .. I came across 4 connectors that had major connection problems with sulfated wires that were bad right into the harness past the connector . One at the fuel pump , next one the rectifier , another at start relay , and the 4th in behind the head light . I replaced the resistor at the battery acid gravity connection the enabled on board monitor in the dashboard to work . The start relay and the fuse block needed to be replaced . It went from a eratic voltage test points to a consistent voltage through out the harness , the bike started instantly and everything worked . Sulfated connections and wires can cause a pile of problems

You know to win a pile of money would make like more and easier ... But I tell myself that I already won big in 2010 I had a fast growing set of tumours on my liver and the team of 5 doctors told me I had 4 days before the cancer would explode on my liver and that if they did not operate in the next 24 hours they could no longer help me ... At 5 am the next morning they started 8 hours of surgery , they removed the liver from my body and then removed a part of my liver to remove all the ugly stuff and put the liver back in my body .. When I woke up I saw the chemo bottle hanging from the pole from my bedside . The team of doctors came to see me the evening , and told me they had got it all . I still am today on a restricted diet , but hey I am still here . So I tell myself , that I had just won the biggest lottery any one could win .

My 83 XVZ12TDK had a main fuse on the positive terminal on the left side of the battery , right next to the start relay . I replaced the fuse block holding the glass fuses with a small fuse block from the the side panel on on 1997 Chev k1500 . Fuses are no more the a 1/2 inch wide and plug in a lot easier than the glass fuse set up

In the mid 1950's to early 1960's southern Manitoba towns were a population of about 3000 to 5000 and would call the local farmers for help with large amounts of snow ....We had a home built powered by a 100 horse power tractor that would handle drifts of snow up 4 feet deep .. The snowblower would blow the show directly on a tandem drive truck and then it would be dumped at a remote location ...Some of the farmers then would be farming up to 1000 acres . A snowblower was a must have piece of equipment ..

When we take off for a ride for 4 days or more .. Make sure the bike is good to go and carry enough extra fuel for 50 miles .. Rain gear , all clothing is double packed in garbage bags . Make sure my CAA .. insurance with health coverage is up to date and they know where we are going GPS is handy while riding ,, but I still carry paper road maps I reserve and prepay for a motel room for at night ..( some people call me a sissy but at 74 years I don't care ) Ran into a hail storm in 2018 , 1 1/2 inch balls of ice , broken windshield , torn blue jeans , bruised on parts of the body We were 10 minutes from the nearest town or safety , kept on riding at a slow speed because there was no shelter anywhere else .

We just got back from a 850 mile run with my 2007 chev 3.5 Litre V6 engine Impala and I have been getting at least 38 - 40 miles per gallon ( running on premium gasoline ) out on the highway at 65 - 68 miles per hour with a full car ..Used a total of 20 gallons of gasoline on the whole trip ....

Winnipeg Global news this morning reported there were total of 641 frozen Vent pipes , so far 351 were in the last 3 days ....This Vent pipe lets the drain in your house work ,Toilet , bathtub , sink etc. . ..The wind chill temperature hit minus 41 degrees...

I am new to the Venture and have seen reports of fuel mileage of XVZ12TDK ..None of the reports agree with each other ... I am hearing reports of 20 miles per gallon and some at 30 - to 40 miles per gallon ....I hope that the 40 miles per gallon is closer ...I just sold my 48 miles per gallon bike ....If it is a 20 miles per gallon bike then I am afraid the the Venture will have to go down the road with out me.
