2nd Gen Highway pegs

Those are some interesting pistolas ya got there. Not my cup of tea, but interesting. Anyone wanting to see muzzle flash and dust roll try shooting a 264 win mag out of a twenty inch bbl. I'm more of a traditional collector or anything that catches my eye... Going up to Woodland tomorrow to pick up a Colt Trooper .357 ca. 1958 that I picked up 10 days ago, and two 22 rifles that I bought last Thursday. I can do Cash'n'Carry on the rifles because I have an FFL3 license, and they are both C&R's.. BTW one of the rifles is a 1957 Winchester 62A pump in like new condition if anyone knows about them... I do want to pick up a Garand someday. Have 3 dozen enblocs waiting in the wings.

Back in the day, before the FJ, the 1stGen's were considered by many as the first sports tourer. If things evolved on a yearly basis like other manufactures, the FJR would probably have a V4, and we'd still be calling it a Venture.

Put a trunk on that baby and you have a modern 1stGen. It is enticing.....

The ever changing twists and turns of life with Tippy..
Condor replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Don't ya feel good when you finally find the problem. In Tippy's case it almost reminds me of chasing a Venture electrical problem. Around here gall bladder surgeries are pretty common. While visiting my surgeon for my 3rd annual, we somehow got on the subject of boarder line needing mine removed. Well, OK my MRI showed that I had a few stones, but...because I had already been opened up they couldn't do the button hole out patient, so I decided to put it off until it got real serious. He also mentioned that they think they have removed every gall bladder in Sacramento. Every morning when they look at the surgery schedule there are always a bunch. Here's hoping that the gall bladder was causing Tippy's breathing problems. From the smile on her face I'm sure she's feeling a whole lot better. Peace to you and Tippy my friend!! -
I donno?? Maybe..maybe not... I don't even know if Yamaha used a balanced set when they built the motor in the plant?? I do know that when we built race engines back in another lifetime they ran stronger and smoother when the crank, rods and pistons were balanced.

Another thing to consider is -if- the pistons are a balanced set, and depending on how big a chunk is missing, if might cause harmonic vibrations in the motor due to one piston not matching.... Maybe??

Lets go back in time,, how old were you when you got your very 1st bike?
Condor replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
1959 fresh out of high school I heard an Ariel Square Four before I saw it, and when I did I bought it on the spot. It had that Indy Offenhauser lope to it, and it was love at first sight. It was my only mode of transportation while in college. Wish I still owned it...... -
Have you checked with Dingy?? He always has engine parts laying around. Make sure the bore is OK. With the broken skirts it might have some damage. PS I like your engine stand... :-)

Yeah man!! Leatherby's...yum... Rachel's Hot Fudge Sundae... yum times 2.... I don't care what flavor you get they're all good. Dave Leatherby started his ice cream parlor back in the late 70's..early 80's in Sacramento. It was the place to go. It was a family operation and everyone in the family did something. The ice cream scoops were the size of softballs, and awesome. A fast talker came along and talked them into selling them their name for a franchise. Dave never did put his place into a franchise and in about a year it went belly up.... the franchise that is. So he kept doing what he does best and it's survived all these years and as popular as ever.... There are now 3 locations. The one in Elk Grove. The original in Sacramento and Citrus Heights. I think?? they are also in the family. Sacramento Leatherby's isn't too far away from the Flaming Grill... the worlds best hamburger.... so the next time you and Tippy are in town..... :-)

If it's cracked and you're in that deep you might as well fix it. One way is to pick up a used motor from a salver and take what you need. It may be ugly on the outside, but generally they're clean on the inside. Just make sure there's not a 'hunnerd million miles on it. My 2¢

I'd do Susanville again. The Black Bear diner closed, but I see where the Lumberjacks Restaurant has taken it's place. Hi-lights from the last time.... Got hit in the left eye by a bug. Splat!! Good thing I wore glasses. But I never learn. A bee got between my chin and the helmet and stung the crap out of me. Thought I might die.... Got 50 miles to the gallon for the first time...but not the last... riding the twisties. Early morning groan out of the speedo. Scared the heck out of me. Luckily it went away. Hitting all the cones practicing low speed turns in the parking lot. Green coolant leak from the drain valve in the AM for the first time.... Other than all that, it was a great weekend....

dry rot on carb boots
Condor replied to StorMand64's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
There is an area in the rubber manifolds that can cause concern. Yes they are sleeved, but right at the top at the carb joint they can crack and suck air. The cracks aren't visible until the clamp is tightened. I went ahead and replaced those on the '99 just to be on the safe side and since I was in there already... -
Sun Valley would be cool. I just wonder what the costs would be for Lodging and food. Remember it is the playground of the stars... and they have lots of dinero.... My Son-in-Law owns a dry wall company in Shoshone ID, and did a lot of the 'cabins' in the area.

Hey Dale... Red Lodge MT is a great little town. We usually sstop there for lunch after riding the 'Tooth' and Chief Joseph out of Cody. My thoughts are, after Bears Tooth, there's not a whole lot of bucket list rides nearby. Cody is much closer to the action...Yellowstone, Bears Tooth etc... But... we've already been to Cody twice and it might be getting a little old....?? My 2¢ for what it's worth...

Travel is a big factor when coming up with a location. VR.org population is the other, and where most of the members reside. A few years ago I put together a 'VR population' map of the US and Canada. Outside of California and I suppose Texas the state count was pretty bleak until getting east of the Mississippi. If memory serves me correctly VR-CA had about 180-200 members OR and WA had about 60 total. Although North of the Boarder might be a great place to ride, the possibility of making it accessable to the major VR population starts to fade the farther north we go. In years past we used to have the Krusin' the Kootneys in the north west which served those up north and members in states on both sides of the US/Canadian boarder. There were lots of great reports for a few years and then the attendance started to fade to where there weren't enough members interested in keeping it going. Originally Venture West was held to allow those members in SoCal and NorCal to rub elbows. The location somewhere in Central CA. Bakersfield, Death Valley, Susanville, San Luis Obispo.... Then we got carried away... I suppose my fault... and went Big Time in Cody Wy. Followed by The Dalles, and then Yreka. Venture West had morphed into something a lot bigger than originally planned. It probably evolved more as a protest in a way because of the international continually being held somewhere east. Except for Ft. Collins in '07, and going back to Cody in '11 for the internationals, the only thing accessible out west has been the Venture West's. Where am I going with all this diatribe?? I guess I'd like to see VW held somewhere in the middle of the Western US. So what's in the Middle?? Nevada...yuck!! However.... in the past there have been a few suggestions that instead of holding it in one location, that it be a tour...?? So here's my suggestion. Carson City NV, to Ely NV, to Las Vegas NV, Back to Carson City. Those that came from SoCal can head home from Vegas. Cheap food, Cheap Lodging, 'The loneliest Highway', plenty of entertainment??? My 2¢

Trying to tighten steering head but....
Condor replied to Bert2006's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
FreeBird wrote up a poor mans tech article on adjusting the steering nut. I've used it and it works.... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?511-Tightening-the-Steering-Head -
I get one or two of those emails every once in a while, and I just move it to junk and black list the domain... Seems to work??

I would think the results would be the same just swapping to the R1's since the '05TD's are more akin to the 2ndGen Venture. But then again I've never owned a TD so don't take it to the bank... Try the R1's first and if that doesn't greatly improve braking effort then go with the master, but I'll reiterate, I think you'll like what you get... It should be a plug and play installation. BTW I recommend Speed-Bleeders on all the brakes as well as the clutch, and when bleeding compress the pistons all the way into the calipers before bleeding. Do not try to seat the pads. What this does is make the volume of the caliper smaller and you won't need as much fluid to get the air out. Left side first. Once the air is out of the lines, close off the speed-bleeders, and then seat the pads. This can only be done with Speed-Bleeders. Making it a one man job, instead of the old fashion pump'n'bleed two man job...unless of course your doing the Tango...
-
I thought I made that clear at the beginning of my last post. And...it ain't volume, it's pressure.... It's a tomato..tomahto thing. You do what you want if you feel it makes that much difference, but it isn't necessary....
-
Let's put this into layman's language. The 5/8" is only 1/16" larger than the 14mm. Hardly enough to make a huge difference in modulation...if any. Also when it comes to hydraulic brakes it's not the volume of fluid, but rather applied pressure. Remember the pads at rest are only 1 or 2 thousanths of an inch away from the rotors and fluid doesn't compress. If there is a difference between the two masters it's very slight. I haven't had the pleasure of comparing the lever of a 5/8ths to that of a 14mm. Perhaps someone who has both could do a side by side. I suspect there might be a difference in levers. They sell aftermarket levers that are adjustable.
