WOW!! Thank's guys, we're one short of filling the list... Go to Ft Collins for a week and all hell breaks loose.... I'm still on the road at my daughters in Idaho, but should be back home late Saturday... if I have another 600 mile plus day in me. I'd like to also add that we can go over the 10 minimum, so I'll give it a week after we hit the goal before starting the ball rolling once again. -

1983 parts interchangability??
Condor replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The temp guage maybe nothing more than a bad ground wire. Since the housing that holds the temp sensors is isolated by coolant hoses they needed to ground the housing to complete the circut. I may also be a bad sensor, which is a simple replacement, or the worst it could be in a bad guage, which isn't all that bad but you hve to get to it and you know where it is.... The temp housing is located on the right side of the engine just aft of the top of the radiator. The gears are interchangeable from the 1300 to the 1200. Have fun...... -

clutch got me stumped
Condor replied to 6pak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What's got me stumped is that the clutch starts slipping when the engine warms up. Perhaps the slave is corroded enough that it isn't allowing the pressure plate to apply full pressure to the plate pack. Enough to hook up when the oil is cold, but not enough to keep things from slipping once the oil heats up??? Keep us posted, this is interesting..... -
The Odyssey is a maintenence free battery, but different in the respect that it's a dry cell technology. To my knowledge there never has been a mixed report on them. They're great.

1983 parts interchangability??
Condor replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Welcome aboard John. For the most part 80% of all the parts are interchangeable. Mufflers are slightly different, and if buying a used set stick with the 83-85's. Front fairing plastics are mostly the same, but you need to stick with what model bike you have for the inside panels. Standard or Royale. Here again subtle differences depending on what you bike came equipped with. I.E. Radio, Class System, Tape Deck, nothing....etc. BTW if you need a set of muffs off an 83, PM me. I have an extra set. Just keep studying the stuff on Ebay...you'll eventually get the hang of it... -
clutch got me stumped
Condor replied to 6pak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The clutch only slipping when it's warm still raises the question about the expansion relief hole. IF the clutch hooks up cold, and then starts to slip when the engine gets hot, it's gotta be a plugged hole. Are you sure it hasn't plugged up again?? If there are crystals in the line there's a good chance that it might have. Take the cover off the reserve and semi-slowly squeeze the lever. If the hole is clear you will see a small imperfection on the fluid surface as the fluid briefly squirts out of the hole. Not 100% on this but oil with friction modifiers should cause the clutch to slip even when cold.... -
1200 or 1300 in the 84?
Condor replied to FROG MAN's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Run it until second goes...if it ever does. I know there's a difference in the carburation between the 83 and later years, but I'm not sure if the change came in 84. Basically the vacuum advance line comes off the manafold in later models and off the carb in 83's. Kind of a pre/post vacuum issue. Besides the 1200 is a bit faster..... -

Good article, and well written. It may be written for Hondas but the principal is the same for the Venture Mikuni's. I saved it for future reference. Thanks for the link.....

Well, if you can't recind the sale, you still have the 30 day warantee. I'd go over the bike with a fine tooth comb, and make damn well sure they they don't just plug the holes.... I hate to say this, but if you can't get any satisfaction...take 'm to court. I'm always suspicious by nature, and the sequence of a bad water pump... to a tune up... to trading the bike in a month later, with anti-freeze in the trunk, makes me very suspicious.... Good Luck.

The whole bike is a repaint. Royales were gold in '83. If there's a difference in the shades of red it may have been repainted at different times using different sources for the paint. It's tough matching reds and yellows. The finish looks pretty nice, but it doesn't reflect the condition of the rest of the bike. You may be dealing with a rebuilt parts bike. If you don't mind me asking, what is the milage and what did you have to give for it? These are two things that make a big difference in an acceptable condition. I would have thought that coming from a dealer the bike would have ran like a top from the get-go. If it ran that badly from the start, I'd suspect that the dealer may have played hot potato with you.

Wimpie Horn
Condor replied to Saddle_Bag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The reason for my response was that when you press the horn button the lights dim. Somethings pulling a lot of amps, or you don't have a lot of amps to spare...????? Perhaps you have an internal dead short in the horn body that needs a ground to complete the circuit. Therefore they work when loose and don't when attached.....because you've grounded the casing... -

Condor replied to Saddle_Bag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have OEM horns mounted with a Squidley bracket on my '83, and they work just fine... However....the original horns aren't worth a 'hoot' above 40mph anyway.. Sounds like you may have a resistance problem on the hot (+) side of the power supply. Corrosion, dirty connection, etc. If they work better after putting the old arm back on I bet it's a bad ground problem..... -
Welcome to the board William. Have a good trip to Seattle and back. Most of us in NorCal will be headed to Ft Collins Co. in 2 weeks for a 2K+ run ourselves. You're welcome to join in if the Seattle trip isn't pressing. The next time we have a NorCal meet'n'eat you'll have to drop by and visit some of your VR neighbors. 1stGens are great bikes....'specially those '83VRs. As far as maintenance on yours, like Don said, fluids, tires, battery, are just about it. Need any help just shout.
