  4. To get the air out of the lines of the front master you need to be real aggressive when bleeding. It's almost a two man operation. One person pumps the 'h' out of the lever and the other cracks the bleeder valve, and don't stop to take a breether. If done slowly the air will remain suspended in the lines as it continually wants to rise as you are trying to pump it down. The other alternative is to reverse bleed the system by forcing fluid into the caliper and up into the master reserve. I've had to resort to this every once in awhile. Do a search for reverse on this forum for a more detailed explanation.
  5. I'm running a couple of 83VR's and have to agree, the RH brake is a little 'soft', but there have been times when I'm glad it was. The last thing I want to do is lock up the front wheel. I'm also from the old school and have that built in front brake/rear brake reflex for most braking chores, and use the front only for mild speed adjustments when needed. As far as the 2-piston brake caliper being outdated, I don't think you'll be able to find something that will fit as the mounts are narrower than the 86-93's, so you can't just swap them out. You would need to change out the front forks to the newer style. I think it's too much trouble... Kind of like that "change light bulb...rewire house" mess we can get ourselve into occasionally.... I suggest replacing the pads, and make sure that both pistons are working properly. If one side is frozen...happens when the brakes aren't bled regularly.... you won't get max braking power out of it.

  8. OK, makes sense to me.... but whatever they use to get those lights to actuate to work. Never really thought about it before.... Besides my A/C house thermostat is still using mercury, so i just assumed?????????

I think it should be the other way around, and the age to get an indorsement to ride a scoot should be raised, not older riders taken off their bikes....but that's just my opinion, and i seem to be full of them this morning..... A good indicator of how safe younger riders are compared to older experienced riders is the premium charged by company's when they insure a 'testosterone' rider, and the bike he's riding. Those companies have loss actuarials that tell them the risk factor is greater and an acident is almost imanent. Too bad they are not published for everyone to see. The premiums are so high on younger riders that most of them go into sticker shock when they apply. The cheap insurance rates are had by older wiser experienced riders....over 50.... riding 'comfort' bikes....
  10. I have one that has 54K on it and it's just starting to skip when I lug it down in low rpm's. Running thru it at hi-rpms and it doesn't miss a beat. I have another with about 45K on it and it's fine. I think the common consensus of opinion is if they're going to go it's between 40K-50K. I also think it has a lot to do with the way the bike is run thru the gears, and the shifting habits of the previous owners. 2nd is a fun gear and coming out of 1st and short stroking/missing 2nd will cause the dogs to round off a bit and eventually get so bad that they will not hook up in the hole. Shifting 'cautiously' from first to second where the dog will hit several times before seating will also do this. But that's my just my 2¢ opinion..... :-)
  11. Keep an eye out for a beat up old ugly front fender with a flap on Ebay. You should be able to get it pretty cheap....
  12. After reading these posts and suggestions i thought i'd toss in another one. What about one of those mercury actuated hood lights that are found in autos? It would need to be hard wired, but should be fairly bullet proof, and put out a ton of light. Pro'bly find them in a wrecking yard?... Just a thought??

  23. I think what happens is that someone bid over his high bid and the system automatically outbid them, and it's recorded as another bid by the high bidder.
  24. Spent a week in Cancun, a week in Peurto Vallarta, and drove down to Bahia de Los Angeles in Baja for a couple of days . Even camped on the beach at Arroyo Grande. Never a problem. Was stopped by Federales on the way back from L.A. Bay without incident. Was stopped at an Army check point in El Rosario on the way down and inspected on the way back. Never an inkling of any danger. Had a great time. The people are super friendly. My 2¢
  25. I hear that all new Ventures came with a dip stick in their tool kits, but I've never seen one and think it's only an urban legend...... I just fill mine to the bottom of the threads in the fill hole.
