  2. I feel your pain Todd..... Yeah, I've had a bad back ever since my early 20's when I ruined it helping a friend unload some rolls of chain link fencing from a pickup. When it happened I saw little white dots falling from the sky. Spent 2 weeks in the hospital in traction. No fun.. I've had back 'cramps' ever since my college round ball days, but this was an injury. The Docs said I stretched the trans ligament in my lower back 2 inches. Two weeks ago I stretched in the shower and felt a pop but no pain. Kinda like cracking your knuckles... Got out and started doing some light lifting, and had to quit right in the middle after the pain got so bad I could hardly move. Spent the next 5 days in the recliner and munchin' Motrin. Worst pain since the chain link accident. They say old sports injuries never go away, and start cropping up again when you get older. Guess what???
  3. I can't tell the difference, but I did actually see a canister in the wild once. Removing it was probably the first thing a new owner did.... It's just a matter of pulling the hoses off the manafold bibs and putting caps on them except for #2 which has a hose that leads to the vacuum booster on all models except the '83.
  4. I think Buddy posted a list of materials on this subject...pre-crash.. and where to get them.... Or.... am I hallucinating again???
  5. Keep your eye on Ebay. 'hess4less' in SoCal generally sells engines for cheap when he get's them in. I picked up an extra '88 1300 off Ebay from a seller in 29 Palms about a year and a half ago. It had 44,000 miles on it and came with the carbs for $300 plus fuel to run down and pick it up. When I got there he tossed in enough extra bike parts to choke a horse. Basically he cleaned out his garage with what was left after ebay. Filled up the bed of the pick-up..... I think I've sold enough to pay for the fuel down and back.....maybe??
  6. I currently have 4 1stGens. One from out of state..TX, one originally from N.Mex, and 2 from here in CA '83/'87. None of them are canistered and the DMV never checked when I registered them here in the state. MOF I had to take the TX bike down to the DMV to have it inspected, and since the inspector couldn't find the EPA lable, he just said the heck with it and ran the papers as is. I think since bikes are exempt from the bi-yearly smog check requirement it really doesn't make any difference and the DMV looks in another direction.....
  7. I just go to view and source. Copy the HTML and paste to a doc file. I can then paste it to an wysiwyg editor in html mode, go to normal, and smooze to my liking.....
  8. I warm the emblem up a bit using a hair drier, and then like Eck use a piece of 80# mono fishing line to cut thru the glue. Once it's off you'll need to clean up the back of the emblem...I use a fillet knife... and replace the two sided tape. I found tape at my local auto paint store. Not cheap but man does it hold.
  9. Good question, but I think it depends on the individual as to what feels comfortable. My '83 is pegged and I'm very confortable riding in the feet back position. or full forward on the highway pegs. My '91 has boards and heel/toe shifter, and I have big feet. The heel/toe sits right over the floor board and doesn't offer a whole lot of room for the foot without getting tangled in the shifter. I'm finding that the setup doesn't let the foot go as far forward as with the pegs and does creat an uncomfortable riding position. Now keep in mind that I haven't looked into any adjustments yet and boards/shifter were set up for another rider. And I hope that there are adjustments, or I'll probably convert the '91 back to peg and toe. Another thing I'm having problems with, so far, is re-educating my toe to do the heel/toe dance.
  10. For the first time in a few months I actually rode a scoot. The back is almost 100%, and the weather was awesome. I needed a little welding done on the '91, so decided to ride it over to the welders. Not far but enough to get the feel of being on 2 wheels again.... WooHooo!!! Temps yesterday got into the 70's. I actually cracked a sweat working on the scoot in the afternoon...
  11. I shoulda thought of that. Steve (hdhtr) and I ran into that problem when we did his and documented it in our write up. Go figure..... http://www.cast-aways.com/clutch.HTM
  12. And my youngest son was stabbed to death about 4 years ago. I wish he had been packin'..............
  13. And I tossed in a possibility in #6.
  14. 'Bout 150 miles to the next gas station......
  15. Yep, only not as many as auto accident deaths..... It's just more sensational. We're kinda used to the highway slaughter, and I don't think you'll be seeing cars outlawed any time soon....... You carry when you ride?
  16. A good way to see if the plates were installed out of alignment is when you pull the clutch plate gently sqeeze the clutch lever with your finger over the end of the push rod to see if there's any movement. If there's movement then the problem's in the plates. If you still have resistence then it could be elsewhere between the slave and the master. One other place to look is if you had the push rods out while working on the basket you may have put the rods back in with the rounded ends against the ball. This will cause the interior rod ends to bind. If you look at the rods, one end has a slightly flat surface. That's the end that goes against the ball.
  17. I'd have a hard time getting my gut behind that tank......
  18. Geeze youse guys are killing me. I haven't been on the bike in forever...not since the M&E in Woodland. Broke my toe and hyper-extended the top of my right foot by pinning it under the scoot before leaving for the M&E. Off thirteen weeks while it healed. Family oblgations took over during the holidays. Rained like a cow doing it on a flat rock for most of the month of January, and cold to boot.. First sunny day two weeks ago, and I'm ready to get out and blow the cobwebs out of the exhaust, and I blow my back out in the AM. The worst since I was a kid and spent two weeks in the hosipital in traction. Couldn't move out of the recliner for 5 days, and don't ask me about taking care of a call of nature. So...... everyone whose snowbound, rainbound, I really feel for you.....
  19. Ay Carumba!!! But I guess it's probably cheaper in the long run as they say it's a 'lifetime' treatment. I may have to try some in the '83.
  20. Both style side covers are the same in every other aspect, and you can modify one of the very earlys buy fabbing a metal tab on the bottom edge. I've only seen one early side cover where the snap on opening wasn't busted and needed to be repaired.
  21. That waterless Evans coolant is interesting stuff. Looks like it's being run in quite a few different makes of bikes. Anyone ever used it, and does anyone know what the price of a gallon would be. I tried to find it on the sight but got impatient.....

    Rider Down

That's a tough one. Had the same thing happen to me a few years ago. You'll eventually get over it. Prayers of peace for the family.
  23. There is a difference between the early side covers and the later '83's. The early sides had a different attachment at the bottom that fit over a rubber post on the strut. The later models from late 83 to 93 had the tab and pull strap. Hope this helps.... Make sure you get the style you need. On the VXE issue the original selling dealer probably wrote the Z as a european zed with the line thru the middle and the DMV pisked it up as an E.
  24. 45 to 85 and dry...... It used to be 50-80 but I'm getting tougher in my old age......
  25. Haven't got a clue George. I'd call the local Ford dealer service dept. and ask 'm.....
