Year to Year Differences
Condor replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the input Gig. I guess the rotate choke was a one year experiment in '84. I'll add your suggestions to the list..... It also brings to mind that the driver pegs are different between the I & II. The standard was discontinued in '88. Good suggestions I'll add them when I get some time...soon. That may all come in due time Greg. Right now I'm just looking in those areas that help in identification when locating used parts. We can get real technical and get buried. -
This is just a thought, but have you adjusted your idle mixture screws lately?? You also might have a float that's sticking and your pumping fuel out while riding via one of the overflow tubes...ergo the strong fuel odor. Don't try syncing anything until you've checked other options...

I just had a thought... I know..I know.. about putting together a list of features, or subtle differences, between all years of the 1stGens. Maybe a good idea...maybe not, but outside of colors which are listed in Venture History it might be fun to put together something. So I'll start, chime in if you can think of anything that first appeared in that year and I'll add it to the list. If I don't get any response I'll figure it was a bad idea and pick up my marbles and go away.... 1983 1. TCI is unique 2. vacuum advance comes off carb. 3. Dash is unique 4. Front brake and Gear shifter are adjustable 5. Hydralic anti-dive 1984 1. TCI changed 2. vacuum advance comes off manafold. 3. Choke set rotates in front of LH Grip 4. Cruise Control 5. How to replace left speaker on 89 Venture Royale
Condor replied to a topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
It looks like you can get to the back of the speaker thru the turn signal, but from what I've read there's one nut you can't reach. So just go ahead and remove the entire Left panel and do what you need to do. You should be able to remove the panel after taking the rear view mirror off, removing the radio and tape deck...they just pull out...and taking the phillips screws holding the bottom panel. It ain't that big of a deal.....and a lot easier than trying to work thru the left turn opening..... -
Done deal Don. Hope it helps. California roads have gone from being the best to being the worst over the last 50 years.... I remember when a kid I knew we were back in Ca by how good they were. Now I know we're back in Ca by how bad they are. And it's a shame concidering how much fuel we burn and the taxes we pay on that fuel......

Hot weather riding, engine temp
Condor replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, your right Randy. Just like in the pic. Ain't editing great!! BTW, the pic shows the valve in the OFF position. So if anyone has to stand on his...or her head to read the lettering you're A-OK.... -
Duct tape is good..... I use military 100mph tape. Great stuff...

Randy, I think a lot of folks are confused about which position the valve needs to be in. On or Off. For normal everyday operation the valve needs to be in the OFF position, and when draning the radiator the valve needs to be turned ON. The positions are marked on the head of the hex, but are a ***** to read unless really clean. Some housing have an indicator arrow and some do not, but the position is about 2:00 o'clock on the housing. IT's fairly easy to tell if the valve is in one position or the other by the ball dent. They can 'feel' the ball when it hits the indent and is in the right spot.... I hope this helps a few folks. I was in a fog until I tore one apart to see what was going on..... -

His original post was clocked at 9:51 AM. I was off and on most of the day yesterday, but didn't see the original... Anyway, even tho- the OEM kit is nice to have I find myself going to the metric tool box when working on the scoot. Squeeze listed all the tools you'd need plus your personals, like needle nose etc. I'd suggest building your own. The only pieces I find really helpfull out of the OEM are the spark plug tube, and the large flat 15mm fitting that fits over the end. As far as wear the kit is stowed?? Who knows?? But if it isn't in the truck or one of the saddle bags you don't own one.....

That's a pretty big question to answer in one sitting. There's a couple of members here that can recite chapter and verse about the 'suttle' differences, but for the most part figure that anything coming off an 86-93 will interchange with your '89. The Mark I's (83-85) have a lot of parts that will fit Mark II's, but the best way to know for sure is ask the board.....

Since pure CB shops are few and far between any longer I'd try Radio Shack, or your local truck stop. Or for other options, maybe these guys... http://www.everhardtantennas.com/

Yeah sounds like your center load might be damaged. What ever happened to those short 'Rubber Duckies'?? I wonder if they still make them??? I don't know about you, but the only time I use the CB is on a group ride. Not shooting much skip.... er... DXing.
-
Yes it is. What was your reading???
-
The reason they want you to pull the ignition, and take it to them is the key numbers are stamped on the back. See Below. If youcan get in there with a mirror, and the area is clean enough, you could possibily read the numbers and call or send them to http://www.motorcyclekeys.com/ On the gas cap. Try drilling it out to remove it, and I believe?? there's an after market Stant that will work? Another OEM can also be found on Ebay.

The bike is clearly 'barn sour'. You need to take it out more often. Sounds like there's a problem in the fuel delivery area. Filter, fuel pump, etc. Maybe a can of Sea Foam if you haven't done so in a while. Maybe bad gas at your last fill??? Running hot and vapor lock??? Just some suggestions..... Good luck.

A friend just sent me this link via Email, and even though it relates to car tires I tought it might be of interest, and apply to motorcycle tires as well. Especially since the cord-cap seperations that have been experienced by a few on this board. It might be something to be aware of the next time we purchase new tires. http://abcnews.go.com:80/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897

Hot weather riding, engine temp
Condor replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Before our Tahoe dayride I went ahead and flushed the radiator on the '83. I'm not sure when it was done last, but I've owned the scoot for 3 years, and I'd never done it. I had some extra GM orange coolant designed for their aluminum headed engines, and decided to give it a try. I think it ran around $19.00 bucks per gallon when I bought it for the Suburban. Tossed in the recomended mix of 50/50 water/coolant and some water wetter...just because...and while on the ride I noticed that the temp guage didn't run quite as high and it cooled down a lot quicker than it had in the past. So I'm happy with the results, and will probably continue to run the same mix in all my bikes. Oh yeah, BTW, I found the drain valve already turned to the on position when I started the flush, so I'd been by-passing the thermostat all this time. After filling the radiator, I turned it off, and by the movement of the coolant the thermostat did open up and fluid started to circulate. I wonder if the valve being open caused the coolant to circulate too fast and not cool down when running thru the radiator???
