Timing adjustment

Could be the boost sensor not doing it's job?? Or... maybe a leak in the sensor vacuum hose?? Have you ever tried to apply manual vacuum on the boost at idle to see if the rpm's change any? And what gear are you in below 2K. My '83 will buck, snort, and get really pissed off if it isn't in 1st or 2nd...- 17 replies

Ok, don't get excited..., but I went to look at a 99RSV yesterday. It was a salve that the owner was trying to rebuild, and had bought some of the parts needed off Ebay. It had seen better days with lots of damage to the plastic, dented tank, etc. The motor is reputed to have a V-Max cam installed, but no documentation. I basically turned it down because I don't need another 'project' in my life, but then got to thinking that maybe it might have some redeeming value. Repaint it black?? I took a bunch of pics HERE , and if you look at the pics of the rear end it looks like the saddles and tire are out of alignment. Or maybe it's an optical illusion?? Whatcha think??

Yesterday while riding I got my first ping...ever.., but I really dogged it down when I did. These motors love high R's. Low R's is what caused it.- 17 replies

Nope..nope..nope..... Call Avon and get it waranteed. KEITHAVON TIRE warantee1-800-624-7470 I had the same issue with the front tire on the '83. Started checking right from the git-go. Avon replaced it and a few months later it started checking... although not nearly as bad.... Turns out they were made about the same time. Anyway Avon waranteed the second and I guess three times a charm as I've put about 5K miles on the third and not a sign of checking in over a year... I might also add that if weight has anything to do with tire wear I don't see it. 5K and the tire still looks fresh... and I'm 350#...and on a diet... I also picked up the set of Avon's from Southwestmoto, and since the rear Elite II on the rear still had plenty of tread left I just put the one on the front. Very pleased with the handling improvement over the II. It's been a couple of years now and the rear still has some miles left in it...and the rear Avon sits. On the handling, at one time I had two identical 83VR's... see 'double trouble'...one with the Avon and one with the II on the front, so had the opportunity to ride both within the same time frame. The Avon bike had a quicker and lighter response than the II bike. You could actually feel a big difference. Not many have the opportunity to compare like that. Just yesterday riding back to the home after a morning ride I almost missed a sweeper exit and did something very stupid. I should have kept going and made a U-turn, but at the last second I dove into the curve and had the front tire well into the chicken strip. Luckly the front tire stuck like glue and I made it.... but not by much.. This is second time that Avon has saved my dumb a$$. Great tire!!

This board has a feature called a Private Message..PM.. Look up his name in the members list and leave him a message. He'll get it the next time he logs on.

You might try getting hold of Gone14S here on the board. He just installed an '88/1300 that I sold him in his '84VR. From what what I gather he just swapped out the motor and kept everything..carbs, electical... off the '84. He ended up with one very nice '84....

Along with a lot of sure things in this life, like death and taxes, ABS plastic will crack. If cost were no object wouldn't it be great if they built the covers out of Kevlar and Carbon Fibre???

In the past I've found that the cheap sprays don't work worth a hoot. The secret is to find one that lists pyrethrins or alrethrins in the contents. Liquid is great for hitting them on the fly, but if you can get it in a powder form they'll track it back into the nest and wipe out the colony. I have used the spray on the 'comb' type nests under the eaves with good results. Around here the county will come out and treat the nest if it's in the ground, but anything else and you're on your own.....

Now that I think about it, I don't hear the term 'harley rider' used that much. 'He rides a harley, or owns a harley, or bunch of harley riders'... sure, but 'harley rider'...nope... Getting back to the term 'hyped image', harley has done a great job painting a life style image that every yuppy in the world wants to jump in on. They went after a little of the inner-rebel in all of us, and it worked. That's hype my friend...

It might be a place to plug in the rear passenger cord. I have a passenger plug on the '83, but haven't any idea as to where it connects into the intercom??? This maybe the place???

Harley riders buy into a hyped image. I don't think that's the reason we ride a Venture. If it is, I got a great deal on a piece of this bridge you might be interested in.......

Try doing most of your riding back during the very early morning. Get on the road at 2-3AM, and get most of your milage in before noon. It gets hot along I-10 thru AZ, NM, TX. Mostly desert. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated. Go south out of Oceanside and take I-8 out of San Diego toward Tucson. It'll join in with I-10 out in Casa Grande AZ. You can get on I-20 past El Paso and head for the barn.....

If the bike has current registration and you have the signed off title and bill of sale, ride the thing home and don't worry about it. If the bike has been sitting for a couple of years, and the registration has expired, I'd haul it home in a trailer. That's what I did when I picked up the '93 in Tucson. Trailered it over to the DMV when I got here and they checked the Vin# to the title and registered it in California. I built my 30' sailboat trailer from scratch in Reno Nev I had to get a temp permit to bring it down the hill to Sacramento since it had never been registered or titled.

Stator Cooling Kit
Condor replied to 5bikes's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
LOL.... I bet if I walked into my local dealer with the VIN# and asked him to look up the factory fixes that have been done to the '83 I'd get a 'YOU WANT WHAT???' -

Stator Cooling Kit
Condor replied to 5bikes's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is a fix to cure the stator overheating problem in the '83.'s & '84's. I don't know if it was a recall or just something Yamaha came up with to appease the customer, but if it were a recall most '83's probably have already had it done. Still not a bad idea to have a kit around just because. Tuff to find when you need one right away... And, if I didn't already have one in my stash, I'd have bought this one.. Cheap insurance. -

Brake fluid warning light
Condor replied to Andrew's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had the the same problem on my '83. Checked all the levels and they were perfect. Then I started looking at the diagram of the rear master and noticed that, like the reserves on the bars, there was a rubber baffle gasket under the lid, and when the baffle was fully extended it pushed the sensor float down a tad like the fluid was low...and it wasn't. I got in there with a probe and pushed it back up a bit and the low fluid warning disappeared. I probably didn't get it out of the way totally but enough to make a difference, and taking the lid off the rear reserve is a PITA. So if you're gettin false low fluid warnings this may be something to look into...?? -
Just healing up normally after knee replacement is tuff enough. We'll keep her in or prayers that she heels quickly, and doesn't have any more problems....
