Hi/Lo driving lights
Condor replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
No Mike, the hi/lo is switchable. Maybe you're right about the load on the system, and to keep the amps down the PO wired in a low beam. Low for daytime visability and high at night when ever needed.. I just went out and checked, and there are only two wires conected to the lamp, go figure?? Nothings burned out. There is a definite high and definite low beam in both lamps... I didn't want to take anything apart to see what type bulb was in there, but from the brightness it has to be a halogen...maybe tomorrow morning... Trace the circutry too... -
I've owned the '91 for a while now, and while messing around with it a couple of days ago, I found that the driving lights have a hi/lo beam wired into them. Kinda cool. I'd really never taken the time to find out what the unlabled switches actually do as two of them are disconnected at the switch .. but the top 3-position switch controls the driving lights. The other two, I suspect, control the trailer lighting as it's wired for both 4way and 5way plugs on the transom.... I haven't checked the bulbs out... they look like a standard aftermarket chrome rectangle driving/fog light... and I wonder if it's just the bulb??

After the initial prime the pump will not work unless the engine is running.... or the kill/start switch is toggled on and off.....

Can we spell 'Gun-Shy'.... I seriously doubt I'll ever do the high hurdle thing from the right side again.... The big reason I used that method was my back won't let my right leg swing high enough to get it over the saddle. So now I'm down to my last option. The old 'grab a fist full of Levi and lift the leg over'...from the left side... It ain't very cool looking, but it works... This AM the knee actually feels like it's going to make it. Motrin's an amazing thing...

An odd one.... -
So, the wife and kids are gone for the weekend, and I decided to ride around town and do a few errands. Take the cover off the scoot, and put 'er into warmup mode. Start to get the gear on, which is only the helmet, gloves, and Venture Royale T-Shirt, 'cause it's just up around the corner. Now I get on the bike from the right side when it's leaning to the left on the side stand. Kinda look like an olympian running the high hurdles. Well let me tell you, I kick my left leg into the air and get it about halfway acrossed the seat and low and behold the right knee decides to crumple like a bag of cheap chips. So there I am madly grabbing anything I can to reduce the pending impact. It ain't gonna happen. I hit the pavement flat on my back like a big sack of potatoes. All I could see was blue. I thought I'd died and gone to the big guy in the sky. After laying there for a bit I realized that, yes, I was still amongst the living. I started taking inventory of all the body parts. The knee hurt like 'H'. The right elbow was scrapped and bleeding. The elbow woulda been OK if I'd had the Jacket on. I waited for one of the neighbors to come give me a hand. No one was around, so that was out. The scoot is still merrily chugging in warm up mode, the lower right fairing sticking about 6 inches out from where it normally attaches to the frame. I think I distinctly heard the scoot say something like 'Dummy'. So it reaches down and give me a hand to my feet. I stand there a bit, and decide, WTH, and put the helmet on, go to the left side of the bike, grab my pant leg and guide my leg over the saddle, go do the errands, come back to the house, pop 2 motrin and 5 aspirins, and sit in the reclioner the rest of the day. So much for working on the '91 while mama's gone.....

Front Suspension Issues
Condor replied to rez's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK, but would that mean that some bikes have forks that are not installed properly, and out of alignment??? -
Front Suspension Issues
Condor replied to rez's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
And both of mine slipped right on. The '91 was a Super Brace replacement, and the '83 was an OEM brace replacement. Go figure.... Wonder why??? -

Thanks Squeeze. I knew I could count on you to chime in with the real scoop on brace installation. -

Just saw your post Richard. Sorry the brace caused problems, that's generally not the case.. Just for the heck of it I took one of the extra braces i still have, matched it up to a Super Brace that I also have, and the foot prints are identical. Holes are perfect and the radius are the same. Even in Super Brace's installation instructions they say to loosen the axle nut and spread the forks. In a few previous posts on the subject some of the members mentioned they loosened the upper fork bolts as well. A couple of members, like you, reworked the radius with good results. Since the amount of relief or spread was only minimal, and fork flex happens quite a bit when the forks are working independantly, I'm wondering if there might be another cause for the binding?? Did you loosen the top bolts when you spread the forks the first time??? -
Nope, different mounting system and bag guards. All I'm saying is that I'd keep the 85 trunk and permanently mount the 86 bags if you are shooting for more storage room.. You will need to pick up a set of 86 saddle bag guards, as they're what the saddle bag permanently mounts to. As far as the quick release detach mounts that hold the 85 bags you can leave them on, but they serve no purpose. That area is covered by a plastic molding on the newer 86-93's. To make things sanitary you'll need to change out the rear fender and bumper. I'm sure there are other areas that need to be addressed and you're just going to have to jury rig as you go.

Timing adjustment
Condor replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It's a restrictor, and yes it can become plugged. See if you can remove it from the hose and spray some carb cleaner through it. It's the same set up they have for the CarbTunes. It just smoothes out the pulses. I've had to clean out my Carb Tune's on occasion.- 17 replies

You'll need to swap out the mounting rack for the trunk. The mount for the bags on each side can be removed and the saddle from the '86 are permanent. Bag guards need to be swaped out. But... it can be doene and several have already been down that road. Since you already have have the larger trunk on the '85, why not concintrate on the replacing just the saddles. That way the trunk can be removed, and you've gained the extra storage of the bigger saddles??

60K. A previous owner supposedly did the engine mods. Weather it was done under a shade tree, or in a shop, is a mystery?? Or if it was done at all, and just hear say?? There is no work order proving it. This is my thinking Brad. It's a buyers market. The bike needs lots of help. There's no guarantee the frame hasn't been tweaked. The trade in value of a '99RSV is around $5,300. Plastic parts don't come cheap. I can fix most of the busted plastic, but would be looking at a professional paint job. Most of the chrome outside of the engine area would need to be rechromed or buffed out...the chrome surfaces have been scratched up pretty good. The LH passenger floorboard is toast. It has a salve title, so as far as any insurance company is concerned it has no value. It'd take a lot of work getting it back on the road. I figured if I couldn't pick it up for around a grand it would cost me more to fix it than I'd spend going out and buying a clean low miler. I don't mind sweat equity, but I don't really like paying anyone for the privilege of sweating.

I just use spray brake cleaner. When assembling use DOT 3 to lube the rubber cup. After getting everything rebuilt and bled wash everything down with water to neutralize the brake fluid. BTW the stuff... DOT3.. works better than paint remover on any fairing surface. Keep everything covered up. As far as which end to start, take your pick. Rebuild it all.... When bleeding start with the farthest run and work to the shortest...

High or Low?
Condor replied to Schlepporello's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've posted this before, but it seems that you'll get the best milage in lower gears.. higher RPM's. I, and others, have experienced around 50mpg while riding in the mountain twisties. 38-40 mpg when running in 5th gear at 4000rpm. Wind resistence and engine load seem to be the enemy.....- 5 replies

Shift Pedal Bushing
Condor replied to rez's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've tightened things up by cutting a piece of plastic milk carton to fit exactly around the shaft, lube the 'H' out of it and slip it into the gap. Works.... If the gap is too tight try a piece of thinner plastic, just don't forget to lube. -

Sounds like you already have a leg up over any one else buying a used bike in that you're already familiar with the it. If you didn't experience any glaring problems in the past, go ahead, hop on and ride it home....

Glad to help....
