  1. Pretty much a direct bolt on. You'll need to swap out the bolts to shorter ones, and mess around a bit getting them on, but they're made to replace the OEMs.
  2. Yep good advise Carl. Been there done that.
  3. I've replaced all the cover gaskets at one time or another and don't use a thing. I make very sure that all old gasket material is completely removed off both mating surfaces before buttoning it back up.... Never have a problem with leaks. Which reminds me of a story. My first bike was a '53 Aerial Square Four, and the sump cover never had a gasket. I remember working the cover on a plate of glass with toothpaste to insure that the cover...which did warp a bit... was absolutely flat.... Still leaked once in a while....
  4. Time to break out the spray bottle of soapy water. Wet the tire down completely, especially around the bead, and you'll see if you have any leaks.....
  5. I used to be a staunch supporter of Premium fuel, but.... after prices started to climb I started to buy Regular, and to be honest I can't see any difference in performance or milage between the two grades.
  6. Thanks for the reply Rick. Just thought I'd ask. I have put several 600 mile days in the '83 saddle and felt fine afterwards.. It was just a personal preference, and I'll be fine riding it just the way it is. I bet it's as soft as a pillow top....
  7. I think I'd prefer he keep his eyes open... What say Rick??
  8. Nope..... Attached are a few pics of the idle screw to help locate it. I don't know why Yamaha hid it the way they did???
  9. I have a 1stGen seat made by a local leather shop for the previous owner, and the foam they used is really soft, and offers little cushioning. It's not totally uncomfortable, but I wish it had a bit more asset support. Unlike most on this board I like the stiffness and shape of the Corbin on my '91, but my '83 could use a little more butt padding. Could you do something like this???
  10. Here's what it should look like when OFF. Actually the writing is upside down if you can't see the arrow.
  11. Hanna looks like she's changed direction and is being pushed back over Cuba into the Caribian and also out into the Atlantic. It's iffy which way she'll actually end up going, but my bet is she'll reform in the Caribian and pick up strengh before heading north on the same path that Gustov took due to the warmer water. Then again maybe she'll break up and disappear.....
  12. I agree with Squeeze. If the drain valve is 'on' the coolant is by-passing the thermostat and takes forever to warm up.. It'll also cause the motor to run hot after a long run as the fluid doesn't have enough time in the radiator to transfer the heat. First check to make sure the drain valve is 'off'.....
  13. I know what loosing one son is like, but I can't imagine what they are going through loosing two. Prayers sent for peace and discernment, and tears shed.....
  14. Somethings dragging somewhere, but the first thing you need to address is that caliper bolt. 3/4 of the way in ain't gonna get it. It might be just cross threaded. When I bought my first VR one of the calipers had stripped threads. Ended up replacing it with another off Ebay back when you could still buy 'm cheap..... I think once you get the caliper on, and aligned right, your dragging/heat problem will go away. New pads will always drag a bit until they seat into the rotor. I might also add that when mounting the calipers never tighten down one bolt and then go to the other. Leave the first one loose until you get the second started.
  15. Don't get me started Rick... I went to a Chiropractor for a bad back back in my 30's. Came out worse than when I went in.... Told myself, never again. BTW I saw a bike on Craigs that looked exactely like your's. You have a twin running around out there somewhere....
  16. Sounds like you had a great time.... Where's the pics!!!!!!!!!
  17. I just want it to go away.... IO hate this feeling...or lack of... If I need surgery, so be it. I just hope the HMO... Kaiser... doesn't try to put it off. They have a tendency to do that. Actually it's the thumb print side, the index, middle...worse of the lot.. and ring. So four total. The little finger is fine. Been using it to open bottles ect. If I try to grab or pick up something with my thumb and middle I can't tell if I even have it unless I'm looking at it. Dropped a carving knife a couple days ago and it almost hit my foot.... Impossible to pick up a quarter, or piece of paper off the floor. Another thing is my power grip has gone to 'H' in a hand basket. I have to use my left hand to open anything hard. Thanks to everyone for all the feedback. Apparently Carpol Tunnel isn't as rare as Common Sense....
  18. If it looks like I'm going to need surgery on the wrist I'm going to try to schedule it for sometime in Jan'09. Jan-Feb-Mar are wet...
  19. Good tip. I've never had a fushion done, but I slouch somethin' terrible while riding. It's a tall person problem. I'm gonna start laying flat on my back on the floor to see if that'll help. I may never make it back up.....
  20. 'Bout 13.5K to 14.5K......
  21. I have a problem with my right hand, and sometimes my left, going dead after riding a while. I know...Carpol Tunnel... On the '83 I have a throttle lock that I can set in order to relax the hand and get the blood flow back into it. Some rides are worse than others, but on Saturday's VWIV ride from Ft Hunter-Ligette, 25 miles over to Hwy1 on the coast, we were in some fairly twisty road conditions, and I couldn't set the lock to relieve the numbness in my right hand. So for just about all of that portion of the ride... 1.5 hrs.. I had to twist the throttle with a numb hand. After a while it hurt like 'H'. Long story short, I think I screwed up my hand big time. It's been two weeks and the tips of the fingers on the right hands are numb 24/7 and they ain't getting any better. Went to the Doc's and she was non-comittal as to the cause. I have an appointment with... I guess.. a neurologist for tests on the 12th. I wondering if anybody else has had this happen to them, and did you finally get the feeling back?? Talk about a PITA trying to zip up the fly when I can't feel the tang!!!
  22. I've seen the thicker Barrons grids like those on the rear running lights of the add on bumpers and light bars, but these things look a lot thinner. They do make a chrome bead striping material that's available thru some auto supply stores. SilverT used the stuff on his '87...looks really nice..., and I think Buddy Rich used some on the fins?? of his 2ndGen. If it is VL it's got to be rarer than chicken lips, and for something that nice I wonder why there's not more of them showing up on 1stGens??? Oh well... gonna have to go play around a bit.... I do like the look...
  23. I ain't gonna tell you that I don't have a spare key because as soon as I do I'll loose the only one I have.....
  24. I wonder if the turn signal grids are VL, Barrons, or homemade??. They look very cool..... I've never seen anything like them before....
  25. Yep. Your CM needs to be resoldered. There are a couple of threads, and I believe?? a write up on the repair in the Tech Libarary. Had the same problem with my '83. I was going to do the repair, but found a nicer dash that I R&R'd and the problem went away. If you can't find it on this board here's a LINK to a repair artical on the web
