Odyssey bat check
Condor replied to rhncue's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Put a multi-meter on the posts and it should give you 12.6 - 12.9vdc after sitting over night. If it shows something around 10vdc you have a bad cell. However I don't think this is the case as your onboard gauge kicks on and off like a loose wire. I run one of the newer smart chargers, and it'll diagnos a batteries condition and give you a read out if there's any reason the battery won't take a charge... I've seen them for around $50-$60 bucks at Sam's Club. They even have a starting circut. I bought mine at West Marine at dealer cost which was more than Sam's, but it's private labled and if anything goes wrong with the unit it's replaced acrossed the counter...no questions asked. -
You right about the time that fuel prices stopped escalating, but I was listening to a speaker about the oil being pumped in Alaska and some of it is actually being sold on the world market. The amount is mandated by the government, but my question is why are we selling any, and what good is drilling for more if we can't consume everything we're producing now. Maybe?? it's that we don't have enough refineries to process what crude we're making, and any more production would be sold elsewhere, and wouldn't really benefit the american people, but the government??? Just rambling.... Glad to see the prices going down.

That's BS. Your bike is covered by a blanket warranty. Yamaha sold it, they need to fix it. There are many parts on the bike that are jobbed out to sub-suppliers. It's not your responsibility to deal with each and every one for warranty resolve...

1st Gen. Back rest
Condor replied to mytquin007cox.net's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You should have popped this question before bidding on the backrest. The 83-85's have a different mounting bracket than the later 86-93's. And the brackets are obsolete. I'm not even sure if the earlier brackets can be modified??? Sorry.... -
Fouling right rear Spark plug?
Condor replied to Riceburner30281's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK, then what type of scoot are you talking about that's been mod'd so much?? Any pics. You may have posted the info in the past, but it would save a lot of time trying to search back thru your previous posts to find any info, if indeed its there. PS, don't blame your dad a bit.... -
Yawn... Wake me when it get's below $2 bucks...

Fouling right rear Spark plug?

And your dad's handle is??? -
That's one of the reasons I shy away from 2ndGens. My knees are in my chest when I sit on one. The Kawi looks like it could be even worse.

Don't take offense, Just checking. You didn't mention where the arrow was when you looked at it. The tire pattern differs from one manufacture to another. My Avon Venoms have the grove channeling water toward to middle of the center groove as the top of the V hits first. With my Elete II's it's the reverse with the bottom point of the V hitting first chaneling water away from the center of the tire, but there is no center groove. So not all is as it seems in the world of tread design.

With the tire correctly mounted the arrow should be pointing in the direction of rotation. Towards the front when it's at the top, and towards back when at the bottom. Sometimes it's confoosing. The viabration and wobble may be due to the tire not being seated to the rim properly, or the axle nut not being torqued properly. My 2¢

rear drive oil fill bolt stuck
Condor replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Get the right sized hex socket on a breaker bar. Tap on the plug a few times with a ball peen. Apply force in spurts.... not constant. It's worth a try... It's pretty tough to strip out a hex if using the correct sized socket. It's when the socket hex is a little undersized that the damage occurs... But you already knew all that.... -
Yep, my old Ariel Square was on the right side, 1 up, 3 down... They were great huh???

Indicator bulb part number
Condor replied to MikeC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yeah Mike. They are the 158 dash lamps. Very common at your local auto supply. As long as you're in there replace them all. 'Bout 7 or 8??..... -
This may be dumb, but in the past ... like a couple of weeks ago...when the computer gets confoosed, and locks up, I find that sometimes unplugging it from the wall, and replugging, will straighten things out???

All close calls are good ones...compared to the alternative. But I gotta say something here. 60mph on wet pavement on a street with open access from drive ways or streets??? Plus thinking everyone's going to stop before pulling out in front of you...?? You've got bigger cajones than I have....

Here in the US we have Rivco adapters for 1stGens, and I see where they have theirs on sale. Not too bad a price. I ordered one for my parts bin just because. The shipping is $12.50 in the US via UPS. So the total come to right around $72 bucks. Just about the same as the Canadian model for those north of the boarder. I also answered my original question about filter size when I read the details. Duh!! Fram 3950. I also see where the Canadian model lists a different Fram filter for theirs and I wonder if there is a difference in the size?? Who has aftermarket replacement pegs?
Condor replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Which peg are you talking about Tim?? If it's the toe shifter you need to start checking friendlier dealers. If it's the foot rest...good luck. I've never beeen able to get one of the rubber pads off, let alone get one on. I'd just keep checking Ebay for a set of pegs that don't look trashed. That's what I've done several times. I've even seen the toe shifters NOS.- 10 replies

The manifold boot bodies don't leak, even with the cracks. They're lined with a metal sleeve up the center. You DON'T need to replace them...and you're getting screwed by the wrench. If you want to make the cracks go away spray them with Plasti-Dip. It's available in the paint dept of Home Depot. The 'O' ring seals on the base will dry out over time and are still available...cheap!! To test, spray volatile carb cleaner around the base. The motor R's will increase if they're leaking. You can also find manifolds on ebay for next to nothing. Like I said you're getting taken for a ride.

Carb diaphragm springs
Condor replied to Oldgold's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yeah, you're probably right on Jeremy. Luckily there's always Ebay, Salvage yards, and Yamaha did built a ton of VR's to feed them. I do think we'll still keep seeing NOS stuff appearing on the market for a very long time. And it's not a bad idea to have a parts bike in your hip pocket.. -
I know this has been discussed ad nausium, but here we go again. Which screw on filter fits the 1stGen screw on oil adapter. There's a FRAM on the '91 now, but the writing and stock number are gone. Why? Donno...?? The only thing I can think of is it's been on there for a very very long time. I haven't changed the oil in it since I picked it up... but then again I haven't taken it anywhere either.. I thought I'd try putting MC specific motor oil in it to see if that will cure the leak. From what I can see it looks like it's coming from around the back of the pan gasket. I also found traces of silicon around the drain plug as if the PO thought that might have been the source of the leak?? And ...he may have put a synthetic in the motor?? It worth a shot to see if it'll work. Anyway, again, what's the filter number. Anyone?? If that doesn't work I'll be taking it over to a tech. Getting too old to be crawling around on my back. A chair is a good thing...

Put some lock-tite on that replacement plug. Dumping all your oil all over the road and your back tire might not be a good thing at 70mph.... There is a company that makes a replacement kit for the oil plug, but for the life of me I can't locate their website. It pricy, and replacing the pan would be a cheaper way to go.
