foot pegs on a venture
Condor replied to krotchrocketgrampa's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm with you Gramps.... I had boards on the '91 and hated them. Went back to pegs and I'm a happy camper. Floor boards are great for short riders, but for those of us that are horizontally challenged with big feet, the foot wants to point down when the knee is tucked into the fairing and the foot is back on first gens. I've sat on 2ndGens and when I put my foot flat on the board my knee is in my chest. Not comfortable. Pegs, both back and highway, are the only thing that makes long distence riding possible. I can't understand why anyone would feel comfortable with their feet setting flat when the natural position is to be pointed down slightly. SO THERE>>>>TAKE THAT!! -
At 10 degs anything would be a bit slow in cranking... Even me.. To get things turning over with a little more ooomph, you might try installing an AGM battery (PC680) and a set of those heavier starter cables that are listed in the classifieds... MOF if you're using the bike in weather that cold , you might think about 5-30. Just make sure it doesn't have friction modifiers. Most 5 weights do....

The Cycle Sak's I got off of Ebay ran about $50 and that included shipping. They are heavy, but I have lighter ones I carry when heading out for an overnighter. I just did several different searchs for Gorilla Covers on Ebay and it looks like they've gone the way of Cycle Saks. There is one seller that's making long term storage cover that may be an answer. The problem is the BIN $69.95 + shipping, which is going to kick the thing up to around $90 bucks.....

They're loosing 5 bucks ea., but they're making it up in volumn.... Actually the shipping is where they're making their profit. Plus the BIN selling price keeps the final fees down to a minimum, and it's only about 25 cents to list the cover. They're not making much. Plus I wrote them about the material they use and the response was plastic. I picked up a made in china for a few bucks more thru a US seller, and it makes a good overnighter, but for long term outdoor storage it's terrible. I did pick up a couple of Cycle Saks off ebay a couple of years ago, and I wish I could find more. They're bullet proof....

All of the above replies were from 2ndGen owners, and this is a 1stGen forum.... so I checked, and you posted in the right place for a 1stGen. . If you're going to run a synthetic oil, make sure it's wet clutch specfic. No frictions inhancers. I used to run 10-40 dino oil in the winter and 20-50 in the summer. Lately I've skipped the 10-40 and just run 20-50... Why? Because I'm cheap... And it's fine. And it's usually above freezing here on the best coast. Castrol GTX 20-50 works well.

Front wheel wobble
Condor replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I wonder if it isn't the ability of the fork tubes to react equally??? Hit even a very small bump, and the front tire starts to wobble. Hit the brakes and the front tire starts to wobble. With the hands on the bar it will dampen the effect, but take them off and away we go. A fork brace might help to equalize the rebound, but it's actually the rebound valve that may be worn out or damaged?? Tires that are out of balance, mounted incorrectly, damaged, will have the same effect as hitting a small bump. Anything that's done to dampen the effect, head bearing adjustment, fork brace, will keep things calmed down, but in the end it's the rebound valve in one or both forks that aren't doing thier job in sync. 'Cource this is just a guess.... On the earlier MkI's there is a rebound adjustment on the bottom of the Anti-dive unit. If they aren't on the same setting the forks will not work equally. On the MkII's if one of the AD's isn't working properly the forks will not work equally. -
Only after they get a gov bailout......

A couple of years ago I picked up a set of lo-mile mint forks, and triple, off an '86 on Ebay for $65 bucks and the shipping was somewhere around $25. Even tho the seller has a BIN of $200 the forks don't have a reserve. I'm not sure what his thinking was, because they charge you extra for a BIN. If he's using the BIN to somehow indicate a value he might just as well have said so in the discription.

I was going to ***** about the 6 gal fuel tank, and then I saw the 75mpg at 100mph post. Wonder what it would be if they slowed down???

All speedo's are interchangeable between 83-93, but changing them is a PITA. I'd look at Ebay for a clean complete dash. 1983DASH. It's a lot easier swapping out the dash. But.... just for the heck of it pull the head light and left blinker, and check to see if the cable hasn't come loose from the back of the dash. I've seen a couple that's happened to....mine included.

I bet it has something to do with passing EPA requirements, and getting a cleaner fuel burn during warm ups.

Weak front brakes
Condor replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Me too Jeremy. The HH pads made a difference. This is just my opinion, right or wrong, but the worse thing you can do is lock up both wheels...anytime... especially when I'm doing 50+. With the OEM system I can slap the binders full on and neither wheel will lock up, but I can reduce speed in a big hurry. Lock 'm up and you might as well be on ice.... I guess it's something that I learned at an early age with drum brakes front and rear... I automatically hit both the rear, and the front, when in a panic stop. I don't even think about it, it's just something I do. -
Yeah, that's more than I made in the last 2 weeks!!!!!!!!

I'm still perservering.... I think the clue will be when they start blaming the chromer for the delay. I've gonna wait until friday the 21st, and if I'm still getting the run around, I'll cancel and start refunding.

Squeeze sent this info to me on the R1/R6 caliper years that will work. R1.....'99-'03 R6.....'97-'01 Also when looking at calipers on Ebay the blue dots are steel, and the gold dots are aluminum. Hope it helps. I really helped me. -

The thing looks like the European Garmin 510C that they blew out on WOOT a couple of weeks ago for $69.95. Garmin reloaded the unit with US data. They sold 2300 units in about 2 hrs....while I was asleep....
