Well not really. But lately I've been selling things on CL all over the US. Listed locally, but getting folks in Fl., Mi., NY., responding to my ads. This may be the new Ebay except it's free.... And if this keeps up, it may not be free for very long. Ebay does own 25% of CL... They gotta be aware of what's going on...........

Thanks a bunch for the feedback Josh. Looking forward to seeing the results of your cca test. Your first comparison idea would be kinda touigh due to each Venture having a mind of it's own, and runing them until they fail could possibily take a more time than any of us have....Zzzz!! I've been running Odysseys for about 4 years on various bikes. I've had them go bad in as little as a year, and I've had them still running strong to this day. There's just too many varibles to get solid results. -
Dumb or just plain stupid?

Jim, You'll have to take the grips off the bike. The caps are held on by a phillips head screw that's accessed from the open end... -
So, do you guys think I should join the Dubuque Bruisers Football team?

Ya gotta do it... I was in a similar situation about the same age as you are now. The Golden State Warriors had walk-on tryouts. I was 6'8"..hey gravity sucks.. 225, High School All League, All State, and played college ball on a scholarship. Anyway, I passed on the tryouts, and have never forgiven myself for doing it. -
Put the Deka in the '83 yesterday. Didn't see any difference in the starting power between it and the Odyssey. So far for the $ the Deka's a better deal. Here's a few pics. Much cleaner install. Note the cardboard 'spacers' with the Odyssey.

That's a nice price. The DEKA from Big Crank @ $74.95 ran me $93.00 bucks with the shipping. Jason, I noticed you have several of the Dekas labled with compatable application make and model. Is the 20L compatable with the 2ndGens?? I know the PC545 Odyssey is a little different than the OEM 20L-BS. I also couldn't find any warantee information on Penn's website. What are the limits on the Deka's, if any???. -
Actually there are four numbers. The first two are the week 1-52 of the year and the second two are the year manufactured.

If you buy a 1stGen and it comes with a mint-ish tool kit, it's a mericle. If it has a tool kit, and the bag is sorta chewed up, consider yourself blessed. If the tools are laying in a pile at the bottom of a saddle bag or trunk.... but are all there.... you're fortunate. If you didn't get a tool kit you're just like most of us. And if anyone gives you a choice of either going on a dipstick or snipe hunt....pick the snipe....

A couple of us have had that problem in the past. I don't think it's a warehouse storage problem, but more of a bad compound problem. I can't locate the old thread, but when I experienced the cracking on the front tire it happened with the first 1000 miles, and by the DOT date it was only 4 months old when installed. Avon took care of mine...twice.. As the replacement tire started doing the same thing... although not nearly as bad.., and was built within two weeks of the first one. The second was also waranteed. This third tire has about 7,000 miles on it and doesn't have a problem, but it was from a different date batch about 6 months later. Another thing that could be a cause is tire pressure. I was told by Avon to run them at max sidewall PSI. In my case 50psi on the '83. I think the 2ndGens are lower at somewhere around 40psi. Here's a pic of tire one. Not pretty. And the scary part about it while riding with Hdhtr up in Nevada we were up in the triple digits...

OK guys, I did some calling around this AM to the local distributor of the Deka battery. The street price quoted over the phone was $84.95 + Tax. Which would still be a few bucks cheaper...for me anyway... than buying one from Virginia and having it shipped cross country for $19 bucks. I also talked to them about dealer pricing and they said the price would be less. IF anyone is truly interested in one of these things it might pay to check the Deka website dealer locater to see if one is close by and possibily save on shipping. I still haven't had a chance to install the Deka I picked up....sick... but will soon. -
Geeze, I thought you were going to tell us about the new Cannabis plant you discovered out in the front yard....

If your's needed to be activated with acid you bought a wet cell battery. I don't know what to tell you except your's is not an AGM, which are ready to go out of the box.. The Deka box has the 'Made in the USA' information on it. I highly doubt that it refers to just the box. BTW, the paperwork included with the Deka battery says 'printed in the U.S.A.' -

My latest PC680 Odyssey has a made by EnerSys, Warrenburg MO. on it. 'Bout 800 miles from LS. Maybe that's the corporate office and they're built in PA?? Anyway, I wonder what makes a 'blem', and what they get for an ETX18L??? If it's just cosmetics, I really don't care...no one sees the battery.. And BTW these batteries can be shipped via USPS Priority Flat Rate for less than $10 bucks, and it takes only 3 days coast2coast. It took a week to get the Deka from Big Crank, and it ran $19 bucks UPS. Things are getting interesting.... -

Wonder if they have any type of direct Group buy program??? I found their website. http://www.eastpenn-deka.com/default.aspx?pageid=218 I also found a local distributor a couple of miles from me. I'll call in the AM and check pricing... This might hold true for the rest of the US, and save a bunch on shipping. -

The Battery arrived this afternoon from BIG CRANK. First surprise... it's made in the U.S.A. Manufactured by East Penn Manufacturing, Lyon Station, Pa., and is labled 'Deka' brand. It looks very good... not cheap..., and is the same size as the OEM 18 series battery in the 1stGens. It much larger than the Odyssey, and is rated at 330cca. Even though the packing from Big Crank left a lot to be desired, it made it without incident all the way to Calif. The anodes are kinda neat in that you can attach cables on the side using the supplied brass spacers, or on the top as usual. I'll post a couple of pics a little later on. So far I like it.... -

First off, it's AGM not Gel. Secondly, there's absolutely nothing wrong with wet batteries, as long as you use them daily, or keep them on a battery tender when not in use. All batteries have a charge/discharge cycle rating, and it depends on the thickness of the plates and other varibles as to just how many times a battery will last. Generally one cycle is equal to a 50% discharge and recharge to full. Discharge a battery beyond the 50% discharge mark and the total cycles are reduced considerably. Some batteries are rated at 100 cycles (cheap), and others are built to last 3 to 4 times that amount (expensive). When a battery is only discharged 10%, before being recharged, a 100 cycle battery should last thru 500/10% discharge/charge cycles. Never discharge a wet cell and it will... theoretically... last forever. However, if a wet cell sits for any length of time without using it daily, or keeping a battery maintainer on it, it will discharge. If it sits for a very long time (months) you can kill it. The nice thing about AGM Batteries used in motorcycles is they can sit for long periods of time and loose very little of their charge, due to their design can deliver more amps, and can be discharged to 80% without any reduction in performance. If you get 5 years out of your wetcells, number one, they're never off a maintainer, or you use/recharge them dailey...or you are very lucky and need to spend more time at a Casino...
