Wobbly Clutch Basket
Condor replied to Grisolm1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can pick up used clutch baskets and bosses on Ebay for very little.... I can't remember if the sloppiness is normal or not. The slight noise is and is coming from the tranny when in neutral. Decreases when the lever is pulled and the tranny stops turning. -
Has anyone here ever stuck a 2ndGen 1300 motor into a 1stGen?? If so, how'd you get around the shift linkage?? Looks like the 2nd goes thru the middle gear cover instead of the stator cover like on a 1st.

I've been giving the Commanders a thought lately. Might try a set when the AVONs get skinny. Why. I just don't buy the explaination from AVON that the sidewall checking is not very common, and not to worry about a little cracking as long it's slight. So far I haven't had a problem with the tires, or the factory warantee service, but I just don't need to be checking the tire everytime I roll out the driveway. My third AVON on the front of the '83 is starting to show checking again, but it performed OK in Cody.

Clutch Lever Free Play

I have... Twice. Both times NADA.... I suppose if I let it sit over night some of the bubbles would rise to the top no matter what I did. But when I bleed the clutch I want to go riding now.... not the next day, or two to three days down the road... For those that have been around on this board for a while you know what I do. Takes about 15 minutes and it's done. -
Since it's a written document copyright laws might even come into effect. However.... spending the time and money to prove it would be a lesson in futility....

Clutch Lever Free Play
Condor replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Nothing poor about your language skills Squeeze. The only 'hole' I can see in your explaination is that the clutch doesn't produce enough back pressure to cause the air to compress. Brakes? You bet, but not the clutch. -
I don't run heated gear, but let me tell you. Earlier this month while at Cody and doing the BearTooth, my ears hurt like hel! over the top. Thought they were going to fall off... The rest of me was fine, even in Levis, a non-mesh riding jacket, and cold weather gloves. Maybe I need electrical ear muffs???

Stator ouput voltage
Condor replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'd agree with all that Earl posted. Check that 3-wire plug first, then the recifier. I wouldn't think it's the stator because of the bikes age, and ruining cooler than the early 1200cc's. Resistense will cause the voltage to be reduced. My '83 and '91 both put out about 14.2vdc. -
Your battey is dead. Put it on a charger. When your bike is idling it isn't putting out AMPs to the battery. You need it to get over 2000rpm before the stator will start charging.

Clutch Lever Free Play

But why?? I've posted reasons why it won't, but I'm always open to learn something new... -
Not really.... As long as the board is open for anyone to peruse, even for a short period of time, any ideas are fair game....

I've noticed that the lock on mine is pretty flimsy too. I think I'll try some WD40 or dry lube on the thing. Maybe that'll avoid future problems?? It also didn't appear to be very tightly mounted. I'll address that too when I reemove all the piled junk off it...

Clutch Lever Free Play
Condor replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've seen this method posted on this board many times, but what I can't understand is how this helps purge air from the lines?? When the lever is pulled in just a tad it moves the compression cup and seals off the expansion hole as it moves past, and there isn't anywhere for the air to go. I would think that leaving the piston out would allow the air to escape... I even tried it to no avail when I first rebuilt a master, and tried to bleed the system. Can someone explain why it works....?? -
Very Cool!! and I'm jealous, but I think I'd put the trunk back on. Never can have enough stowage space, and a back rest for the passenger would be nice....

I bet I've listened to that a 100 times and still get goose bumps.....

I think it cost the wife and I around $850 per. The kids were half price. The shore 'tours' ran another 5-600, and it could have been a lot more but we were frugal. We drove up to Seattle from Sacramento. Stayed over night in Oregon. All in all it worked out to be a lot cheaper than flying 4 people. If it'd been close in cost we would have flown... Now with this economy all sorts of 'Deals' are being bandied about so shop.. shop..shop....

That mental image is way too funny!!......

Geeze, don't get your knickers in a twist and lighten up. I made a comment and it was tongue-in-cheek. I'm not trying to usurp your expertise in the area of manufacturing in-work costs, but I've been dealing with manufactures in M&M for over 45 years and have pick up a few tid-bits of info during that time. Manufactures modify production components and parts all the time. It's not unusual. Not even for Yamaha. The 1stGen is a good example of that. Where they did get stuck in the mud is with the 2ndGen. To think that they are still buying components thru outsourcing to keep a production run unchanged is a fantasy, and paying more for the part because it's obsolete is a well. Believe me when I say they bought a bunch of the integrated com systems and still have a shelf full of them is the main reason they are not improving the part.
