  1. Being a cheap SOB I bought a GPS off of WOOT.com for less that a $100 bucks. Since I don't need to be intertained while riding... the ride is intertaining enough, and I know where I'm going...most of the time ... I figured for what little use I get out of it, MPH, miles covered, etc. it didn't make sense to have $400-500 bucks sitting on the bike. The only drawback to the cheaper units I have found is the ability to see the screen in sunlight. Something that even the expensive units don't have. My suggestion if you plan on spending the big buck$ make sure the GPS is motorcycle friendly....
  2. Man I feel for ya Don. From a fellow gout sufferer, currently living on Alky Plus. Achoo!!! Look at it this way.... you can still type....
  3. The last time I stopped in at my local battery dealer to check the batts because starting was getting a little slow on the F250 Diesel, I had to replace them. They laughed when I started to complain about them not lasting, and then pointed out that they were 8 years old.....
  4. I don't think there is an airflow restriction caused by the tank cover, but I guess the only way to know for sure would be to connect a vacuum gauge to the airbox somehow and see if there's a difference with the tank cover on or off. My '83 is runing fine with the K&N and MACs so I don't care.
  5. from sunny...er...foggy California.... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw6NFmcnW-8&feature=player_embedded]YouTube- The Besler Steam Plane[/ame]

  7. That plastic connector is nothing more than a vacume pulse smoother outer . Smooths out the vacume pulse to the sensor. It also can become clogged and cut way back on sensor response... My 2¢
  8. I had the dim or no low beam on the '83, and planned on doing the resolder.... someday?? But since I don't do much riding at night I kept putting it off, and adjusted the high beam down and put the resolder on the back burner. BTW a new bulb didn't help. I didn't really like the finish of the dash as it looked like it had been repainted and the white lettering job wasn't the greatest in the world. So I popped for a very low mile dash assembly off Ebay and R&R'd the whole dash. I now have hi/low beam which I still don't use very much. On the CLASS system E4 code. You may be able to dodge the resolder job. Sounds more like all you have is a dirty or bent plug contact if it works when applying pressure to the plug. You might try cleaning the contacts with CRC 26 electrical contact cleaner, and do a visual on the alignment. If everything looks good and it still doesn't work, you may indeed have a cold solder joint. The controller comes apart easily. Just resolder the power leads from the plug to the board. The E4 should go away.
  9. There is movement in the spline. Every time the rear suspension works up and down the spline will move in and out of the u joint. As the lube dries out the spline teeth and cogs will start to wear. Although very minute there is a bunch, unless you're riding on an absolutely smooth surface, and we all know that ain't gona happen.. Hope this helps...
  10. The only singer that I feel comes close to Joplin for grit is Melissa Etheridge. This cut used to be a stand alone on youtube, but now it's being marketed by Vivo... what ever that is?? Still plays, and great to listen to.... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDpJRI7CocU]YouTube- Melissa Etheridge - I'm The Only One[/ame]
  11. I bought some in Ft Collins in '07 and put it in the '83 for the trip back. With the temps we were having I figured anything would help keep the engine temp down. It did work a bit, dropping the needle a couple of widths on the guage while riding in 105 degs all day. When I flushed the cooling system last year I added 2-3 cap fulls (recomended) just because and the needle stays about midway up the scale a lot longer than it did before. Is it my imagination or does it really work?? I really don't care as long as my brain thinks it does...
  12. I've seen Festival Express on... I think.... the local PBS station. Great documentary..
  13. I just checked out the Superbrace site and was blown away by the retail price of their 1stGen braces. $143.95. WOW!! I just want to let 1stGen'rs know that I still have group buy fork braces left for $60 bucks. The price just keeps getting better as long as SB keeps raising theirs..... Is it too early to get the scoot ready for spring???
  14. I know a lot of people don't care for her type of music, and I don't know why I'm attracted to it... I guess it's that in your face.. let it all hang out style?? Bobby Mcgee, Cry Baby. Love the stuff. Ran across this on youtube. WOW!! IMHO.... JANIS JOPLIN
  15. If there's a need to pull the rods it can be done using one of those slim pencil magnets that extend like an antenna. Also be very carefull not to loose the ball that fits between the short and long rod. Also be carefull that when reinstalling the rods to make sure that rod ends, that have a slight flat surface, go against the ball. Otherwise the ball will want to slip off the rounded tip and cause binding.
  16. Ditto on the Pledge....
  17. A couple of Chamoise Shirts from Cabela's. Just in time for the California blizzard season....
  18. I have a ton of info for a clutch that slips when hot, but this one has me stumped??? Slipping when cold and locking up when hot is something new. I'm wondering?? if the slave might be a bit gunked up or rusted internally, and the piston cup is keeping the springs from fully returning the push rods until things start to heat up???
  19. Hardly ever.... MOF I'm not here right now... Geeze it's getting to be a long winter....
  20. If you can get it up on the trailer take it down to the guy that did the tire change with the new stem (later post) and let him deal with it..
  21. Once in the AM to read the new posts. and then throughout the day as I get email about a new post to a thread I've commented on..... until it gets ridiculous... Like 'Why'..., and then I'll kill the thread subscription. I'll also manually subscribe to a thread if it's interesting and I don't have anything to add and in learning mode...
  22. No.... Just one at a time.... Whew!! A litter...bite your tongue.....
  23. First off.... DON'T USE SEA FOAM!!! or any other carb cleaner for that matter. You'll end up going BOOM!!! They make specialty cleaners that are non volatile. I use Branson MC-1 Solution. Found it on the internet. Even plain water will build up heat after runing the USC for a while. Heat helps in getting the parts clean, but too much with certain cleaners will cause a lot of grief... A 2.5 liter isn't big enough to handle the larger pieces. My Elma E 30H is 2.75 liters and I wish it were twice as big to handle throttle bodies in one dip. Remember the physical inside dimentions will be cut back even more when the parts basket is used. Also I have two different baskets. One is a screened affair and works fine with larger pieces. I also have a semi-solid basket that will take the small stuff without them falling through into the bottom of the tank. You'll need both. At $80 bucks the HF bath is priced very good. It doesn't say if it has ceramic or metal transducers?? But for light cleaning jobs it should work just fine. I'd pop for the extended warantee on it from HF. Mine ran $225 with the HDs, and I stole it...
  24. The next time I get a photo of me in the little boys room I'll post it....
