  1. Officially?? The spring Equinox is in about a week and a half. All that means is we're gonna START getting warmer....
  2. Looks like I'm gonna be stuck riding the Nevada Dessert again this year over I-50. Hope it's cooler than I-80 in '07. O'niting Saturday in Ely, and runing thru Utah to Durango on Sunday. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=sacramento+ca&daddr=carson+city+nv+to:austin+nv+to:eureka+nv+to:ely+nv+to:Durango,+CO&hl=en&geocode=FUS1TAIdgCTC-Cn5l4OycsaagDHbfxl0qmofkg%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B&gl=us&mra=ls&sll=38.441075,-114.6874&sspn=8.205162,14.040527&ie=UTF8&dirflg=d&ll=38.61687,-118.037109&spn=8.185647,22.412109&z=6
  3. When I first bought my '83 it sounded like a mad man with a ballpeen hammer loose on the inside. I didn't know any different and thought it was normal. After ironing out all the issues with the brakes and clutch I finally got around to doing an oil and filter change. Put in my old standby Valvoline MC wet-clutch specific 20-50wt, and Holy Ratfeathers Batman the thing sounded like a new engine!! I have since changed to Castorol GTX 20-50wt, and it hasn't gotten any noisier because of it. So I'm with Herb on this one. Try GTX 20-50wt because it's cheaper, and see if things don't quiet down a bunch.
  4. This last week there have been a bunch of geese flying over headed north. Must mean things are going to start heating up north of the boarder....
  5. I don't think anyone has ever tried to upgrade the rear....except Earl maybe... Since the rear braking is such a small part of the overall braking available it might be easier to just install HH pads and get a mild increase. That said it would be interesting to see what you come up with Gary.
  6. Thanks for the heads up, but I have a question. Is that front tire clamp all thats holding the bike upright??? And if the bike needs to be put on it's centerstand it will move aft as it's being lifted up, and I'm wondering how it's kept in the clamp??? Those things scare the 'H' out of me, but if I can picture how it sits up there safely I'll try it. Help.....!!!!!!
  7. Ok, I said I'd do it... just took me a while longer than anticipated.... The first two pics are of an V-Line 1200 MKI rack and the second is of a V-Line 1300 MKII rack.
  8. Looks like I'm not going to be alone in Durango come Sept. Looking forward to seeing everyone at this years Venture Rider Round-Up 2010 in Durango.... PS: I'm going to start putting together a flyer. Send me any input/info /ideas you might have that would make our visit more enjoyable if you'd like... PPS: And.... I just made reservatioins at the Motel 6 in Ely Nev for Saturday 9/11/10. Anybody else going thru Ely on their way, let's grab diner.
  9. Bob, On the later model middle gear side covers there's an access hole in the cover. On the '83's it's not there. I'm not sure when the hole appeared, and I've wondered what it was for??? Now I know... Pro'bly added after a few mechanics started to biatch about having to pull the cover to change the side stand switch??
  10. That's what I'm thinkin' too Earl. This '91 has a lot of 'stuff' on it, but I never got to talk to the PO to find out if he'd done anything to the engine or suspension. I guess it's discovery as needed. Heck, it may already have a V-Max in it. I'll know for sure when I get it loaded up. I'm not sure about MPG, or if it'll act the same way as the '83 and get 38 on the flats and 50 in the twisties but the V-Max may help a bit??
  11. It finally closed at $3800. Don't know if this is a good price of not. I think I'd rather toss a few more bucks... if I had them... at a Venture...
  12. What get's me, and it's been a few times, is the Paypal payment is almost instanteous, and the refund will take weeks. As a small busines I issue refunds as soon as it's possible on returns, and emediately on a prepay if something happens, or the customer changes his mind. One thing that will happen is that if the payment was made using a credit card, Paypal will send the refund back to the card. It's a PITA having to check the CC statement to make sure the refund shows up.....
  13. Man, Lowell you sure got me to dusting out the cobwebs between the ears. I can't put my finger on just one or two things. I have a bunch of memories of things back when I was only about 3 y.o. Trouble is I can't remember which came first, and I'm not sure if they are actually memories or family pics I've seen over the years?? Geesh... Gotta go get another cup of coffee....
  14. Sorry I didn't read any of this in Say When..... Thanks for clarifying...
  15. I have a V-Max final waiting in the wings for the '91. Not looking for more power, but looking for a little lower gearing while pulling a trailer with two up. I may be the only one thinking along this line, but for me it should work...
  16. I think Squeeze meant to Say What????
  17. The VentureLine MKI and MKII luggage racks are different as the trunks are different. There may even be a different configuration for the '85?? The rack needs to clear the backrest hinge cover on the MKII. So the front of the rack is sloped up. If someone hasn't already done it by this afternoon I'll go out and take a pick of both. BTW the VentureLine racks have a medalion with either 1200 or 1300 in the center of the rack. I've never seen an aftermarket rack that looked good when installed.
  18. I've had issues with Avon in the past, but so far so good on the latest set. As far as cold concrete goes I have both my runners stored out side under all-weather covers on concrete and not getting a thing. The tires are waranteed for 5 years against any manufacturing defects. It also depends on how many 32nds tread is left. If you have one that is cracking but shows tread close to the wear bars they won't do a thing. In my cases they were fairly new when the cracking started. I also have 4 bikes that have been sitting neglicted with Dunlops on them that are older than dirt. No cracking. The only reason I've been sticking with Avons is they handle so well. However that said I've been looking at Mitchellin Comanders lately. It's the one tire that never seems to get any complaints when the subject of tires crops up....
  19. Now that makes sense....
  20. Is there some sort of new style stem that you can install from the outside I'm not aware of?? All the stems I've seen so far have to go in from the inside, hense the question about having to get the tire busted back down... on one side at least.
  21. My question would be how does he get the valve stem back in without busting the tire back down....?? Maybe I'm missing something here???
  22. I'd suggest staying south as long as possible before heading north into Utah. Might take a little longer but the weather windows get bigger......
  23. My sympathies go out to the family, but in answer to your question.... It's not going to happen. There will always be 'left hand louies', and there will always be accidents... both auto and motorcycle. Most of the time when it's a auto vs auto they just bang each other up, exchange insurance info, and walk away. When it's a auto vs MC, fatalities happen. Nothing we do is going to change that, unless we all start walking... or riding a horse.. Car drivers are not going to continully be on the watch for motorcyclists no matter how big the awareness compaign, it's up to us to be vigilant, keep out heads on a swivel, and think ahead. Relax and you're dead.
