Ya know what I've always had trouble with is people saying the difference in a couple of pounds pressure makes a difference in the handling of a bike....... At 35-40psi a couple of pounds is squat....
-
Never read about one here. Might be something that one of our 'welders' might be able to do on an exchange basis??? Cut an inch or two out of the shaft below the loop and reweld, grind smoothe, and rechrome or let the owner deal with the chroming....

fuel mileage problem
Condor replied to slick's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Just a wild stab here. Runing strong but surging, usually indicates something going on with the timing. Have you checked the vacuum line going to the boost sensor for leaks??? -
Put a load on that battery just for the heck of it Klaus. I had one that checked out OK using the multi. When the battery dealer first checked it out he thought it was OK too, but when he put a load test on it, it failed big time. It had a shorted cell... Not common.

carb (?) high idle problem

Just depends on the severity of the crack. Haven't heard of one cracking for a couple of years now.... -
carb (?) high idle problem
Condor replied to warthogcrewchief's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just went through that problem with the '91. I solved it by backing off all the sync screws on 4,1,3, plus the idle screw so they weren't effecting anything. Fired up the motor and readjusted the idle screw only to 1000rpm. Motor warmed up normally and the choke worked as it should. With the choke off and the engine warm I could rev the engine and it would settle back down to idle speed normally. I haven't resync'd the bike yet, but feel it will respond normally. I'm no carb expert, but what I think is happening is if the the carbs other than #2 are sync'd too tight the idle speed is actually being controlled by #1, or #3, or #4, or any combination of them. When the motor is warm, and the choke is off, one or more of the carbs open up the main jet sooner and keep it open longer causing the idle to stay high. Like I said I ain't no expert, but this worked for me..... -
Yep..... Common sense tells you to give them as much clearance a possible.

Lots of things could cause the weaving back and forth. Fork pressure isn't one of them. Bad/loose bearings, weak springs, gummy fork oil, are a few. But since you're going to find it a new owner, I wouldn't stress over it. However... if the weaving is the reason you're selling, I suggest you service the forks and put in Progressive springs. Once you've done that, I have a fork brace upgrade that will really help in handling.... On the CLASS glitches do a resolder and clean the connectors. -
I'm as dumb as a brick when it comes to anything bluetooth. Here's what I'm thinking about doing, and wanted to ask for input on whether it's even possible. I just picked up a Garmin Streetpilot c550 with bluetooth capabilities. It also has the MP3 player. What I wonder is... can I get the Garmin, and a helmet bluetooth head set, and my bluetooth cell phone to interphase with each other? The Garmin addresses the ability to link to the cell phone, but can the helmet set send and receive audio and be the primary controll???????? Anyone ever done this type of set up? I like the Garmin as it has the same sunlight screen as the Zumo550. It is smaller but easier to find a place on a crowded 1stGen dash. Any thoughts would be appreciated....

Hey Brian, it must be the season for plugging leaks.... The '91 has had a mystery leak ever since I bought it, and it was driving me nutz. I finally had Kurt replace the 'O' ring in the gear indicator and he drove the 'H' out of it with out leaking a drop. During that time he had Herb's cut-away middle gear cover on it. (It'll be mailed back to you Herb....) Anyway Kurt put the original cover back on and I trailered it back to the house. While syncing the carbs it started to leak again. Grrrr!! Anyway I went ahead and replaced the middle cover gasket, put some RTV gasket maker along the bottom edge, and it hasn't leaked a drop since. Yes I warmed the motor back up to make sure there was oil in the middle gear sump... Now it's on to figuring out all about the wiring on this thing.... PS: Hope you didn't touch that '09.... You know they give you warts....

Good luck Don. May the cyber gods watch over you, plus I'm sure it won't be as bad as the big crash....

I don't think it's all '83's. I don't remember having a problem taking mine off last summer when I flushed the system??

Yep, that's what my first front tire looked like with less that a thousand on it. The second built within 2 weeks of the first started cracking too, but not as bad. It was also waranteed. This third front tire has been doing good.... I have around 6000 on it... and so far so good. I bought a front and rear the first time around, and didn't actually replace the rear until just before Cody. Keeping a watchfull eye on it....

You're right George. That's the reason for this thread, and that's why I started it. I don't have to re-read it. It seems that Avon is trying to avoid the obvious. A recall on all Venoms sold in the US. Fortunately no one has been injured or killed yet. Their warantee approach to the problem has been above and beyond, but from what I can see... so far... the problem still exists, and if they have tried to resolve the problem, they haven't been very successful. One or two cracking problems would be isolated incidences. 24 cracking problems, and counting, is a potential design defect.

If the Avon weren't so much of a handling improvement over Dunlops, I woulda done the same thing George. 10,000 on a tire isn't a deal breaker. And the stone leak... Let me tell you about my truck tire. Armstrong Rhino 10ply 1200/16.5 M&S. Went 4 wheeling up in Nevada and ran thru some shale. Had a piece penetrate an inch of tread, the overlay, and all 10 plys of nylon, out in the middle of nowhere. So that can happen to anyone... and any tire. I don't think Avon was at fault. What is a glaring problem is the sidewall cracking. So far there are 24 tires on the list and doing the math that's 1% of 2400 tires. That would equate to about 1 out of 4 members running the Avon Venoms. And I bet there's a lot more members who have had cracking problems, they just haven't chimed in yet.

All depends on the amount of tread left....

What's the best deal you've found on Craigslist?
Condor replied to Godlover's topic in Watering Hole
I've bought a lot of stuff off Ebay, but don't sell it, just stow it away. Unless you count the right hand side cover for a 1stGen in fairly good condition with the vent/louvers. It had a broken stud. Bought it about $50 bucks total including shipping, removed the vent, fixed the stud, and sold it on Ebay for $50 bucks. In essence I got a free vent. My biggest non-Ebay deal was a Linhoff Camera system. Bought it for $2000 and sold it for 25 grand to a Japanese Collector. Or the early Nikon 609xxx range finder camera I found it in the bottom of a box of old cameras. Gave $20 bucks for the whole box. Sold the Nikon for $2500. OR.... the fractional biotar lens I picked up with a Contax camera system. Only 11 know to exist in the world. I had the 12th. Dang I had fun buying and selling cameras.....- 15 replies

I'm not a big fan of rebates. I don't trust them. I've gotten a few, but about half of them disappear never to be seen again. I think they shread them and feign ignorance. I did buy a Maytag fridge once and received the rebate over 2 years later!! I'd just as soon they issue a coupon, and knock the bucks off at the store level. I just get tired of figuring the rebate on the price and then never getting it. Especially those rebates that are handled by a third party company.

So George.... What are you trying to tell us??? But just for the record, when did you experience sidewall cracking on yours...
-
I gotta agree with you, the strength of a tire is in the casing, but.... handling is a direct result of rubber condition. Throwing a tread on a MC tire will be a lot more dangerous than throwing one on a car or truck at 65mph. Perhaps one of the reasons something catrostrophic hasn't already occured is because Avon is under the microscope, and I bet that the knowledge of Metzlers seperating at one time may have saved a few mishaps with that brand. Avon wouldn't be waranteeing their sidewall cracked tires if it wasn't a possible problem. I have to tip my hat to the Avon Warantee Dept, and their treatment of the problem, but I think it may go deeper than that. Product liability might be the biggest motivating factor.

After following any thread about tires on this board, there seems to be one tire that I just haven't heard anything bad about. Mitchelin Commanders. While doing a half fast search on Google I ran across this site. Almost makes me want to buy a set just because.... MOTORCYCLE SUPERSTORE I'm not endorsing this dealer, but their prices are comparable to South West Moto, and over $75 bucks is free shipping. Heck that would be one tire most of the time....
