engine temp n hesitation upon starting
Condor replied to somedudenamedev's topic in General Tech Talk
OK, I could be wrong here, but I think I read somewhere that when a wire gets hot the resistence increases. Dirty connections will also cause this. On an undersized starter cable this may be the reason for the hesitation. Get with LoneStarMedic and ask him about the starter cable mod. -
Ask GeorgeS about the time we were riding thru Wyoming with thunder storms and rains all around us, with 65 mph cross winds on a two lane highway, and 18 wheelers coming from the opposite direction. Exciting....

Give this a shot Dan. I had the sluggish return to idle on the '91, and that was after tossing a sync at it. It acted just like a vacuum leak. I reset the idle jet to 2.5 turns out, and then backed way off all the sync screws. Then I fired the bike up and adjusted the idle to 1000rpm on #2. With that set I adjusted the sync screw on #1 until the idle rpm started to barely increase, and then backed it off a smudge. Then I let the engine get up to running temp. Turned it off and connected the Carb-Tune. Fired it back up and #2 and #1 were almost perfect...just needed a very small tweak to get them equal. All the while the engine idled like cr@p. The sync on #4 and #3 were so far out it wasn't even funny. Well maybe it was... One rod all the way at the bottom and the other all the way to the top. I started turning sync screws and they started to balance. When they did the idle started to climb toward 2000rpm. When it got over 2000, I backed the #2 idle screw off to 1000 again. Careful it can get warm in there... I kept fiddling with the the right side screws until I got #4 and #3 balanced. Then I balanced the right side to the left. Readjusted the idle one last time, and the motor runs great. Responsive and returns to idle like it's supposed to. Basically it's starting a sync from scratch. BTW while tweaking the right side screws the motor giggled, farted and backfired until things started to come together. Don't let it scare you, just keep adjusting.

Too much whine:?
Condor replied to GOINtoHELL's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Now that I have a 2ndGen... I don't know if it has the 'whine' yet.. it's new2me and it's been raining. But I've had the idea of pulling the clutch basket out and replacing it with a clutch assembly out of a 1stGen with Barnet springs. My '83 had a 'once-in-a-while' whine, but it wasn't unpleasant, and it was sporadic. Anyway it's something to think about??? -
Too much whine:?
Condor replied to GOINtoHELL's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks for doing that video and youtubing it. Now I know what that whine sounds like. I think it sounds more like a chirp than a whine, but to each his own. I'd get the I basket. Like water torture one little drop of water on the forehead can become a sledge hammer over time. Loud mufflers can mask the noise but they're just a bandaid, and can cause other issues. It would be the same thing as some of these kids with the loud music playing in their cars. We have enough just dealing with with windnoise, and that whine could add to that effect. -
or it could be tire whine or wheel bearings. Since it only happens between 103 and 116mph I wouldn't worry about it unless you plan on traveling that speed on a daily basis and holding it there. If it were happening at a slower speed then I'd be concerned.

Geeze, here we go again.... I remember back in the late 60's a store somewhere in the south ran out of T-paper. A local problem, and they reported it on the evening national news. Everyone in the US ran out and stocked up on toilet paper, and we really did have a shortage..... Where's that Sears Catalog???

You added to the list MIke. Fill us in on the details when you get them. I don't think you'll have a problem getting the front waranteed MILEAGE......WARANTEED(y/n).......DOT DATE.......REPLACEMENT DATE

I just tossed two Yamaha/Shoei's in the trash that were 10 years old. Not because I didn't think they would no longer protect the wearer... they were simply too small for my noggin... and the liners were glued in, filthy, and it looked like a cat had slept in them... into the dumpster they went. I think this 5 year rule is a marketing gimmick to enhance helmet sales. I also think it's a parachute for the helmet industry when it comes to liability. Fiberglass deteriorating? Give me a break. I'm in the boating industry, and we have FRP boat hulls that have taken a much more exposure and physical abuse, that are close to 50 years old still going strong, with no end in sight, then any helmet out there. When a boat is scrapped the hull is considered non-biodegradable and treated as such. No one knows just how long they will last, but it's a lot longer than 5 years. The jury is still out on some of the newer materials such as carbon fiber, but I bet they'll fair as well. Some of the plastic abs helmets will probably not last as long, but will probably absorb shock better than glass. So my feeling is if the helmet is stored properly, and crash impact free, it's useful life goes way beyond 5 years.

HE LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome back JB....

That does look like a way to go. The 1stGens already have an equalizer set up. Wonder why Yamaha didn't do that for the 2nd's.....

Well, thanks everyone for the feedback. I went ahead and popped for the pump.... Now all I have to do is figure out how to pay for it. I hate these sellers that have to use a payment system other than what's offered by Ebay. I left a message on their phone.. Calif Company... and will talk to them in the AM. Yeeesh!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the things I didn't get with the '99 was an air pump. I found one on Ebay. Anyone else use this one?? Good..bad...ugly??

running boards vs pegs?? anyone help?
Condor replied to somedudenamedev's topic in General Tech Talk
Yup... had the same problem on the '91. Just didn't feel natural with the foot setting flat while it's directly below my butt... The Plus in that position it took a little away from the overall knee to foot distance. So off they came and I installed a clean set of MKI controls. The early MKI's peg position have some adjustment back and forth, not so the MKII's.... Actually I've done the swap on all my MKII's even if they came with pegs. -
Would 47,000 on a '99 be too many miles to switch over to MC Synthetic oil? Whacha think??

Brake upgrade to R1/R6 calipers?
Condor replied to kbert777's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, it's my ride and I don't see any need to change. Despite what your saying the R1 calipers center perfectly on the MKII rotors. No rubbing of aluminum whatsoever. Swap out those old style FJ calipers when you have a chance and give it a try. Adding R1's to MKII's has been around for a few years. It's not a new mod. There have been a few done by members of this board. You may belong to another board, but this one, and the info available on it, suits me fine. If there was as big a problem as you discribe, I'm sure it would have reared it ugly head long ago. So far not a wimper... PS... I'm nobodys Grasshopper....... -
Brake upgrade to R1/R6 calipers?
Condor replied to kbert777's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Runing R1's and don't have a problem... No rubing and the bike straightline stops every time.... with standard linked set up and MKII rotors... If you know anyone who's experiencing rubbing I'd suggest they check for warped rotors. Also the MKII calipers have the same size pistons... L&R... inside/outside, and the pad size is the same as the R1. The backing plate is different. The R1's do have different sized pistons. Smaller and larger. Which gives a much better feel when braking.... Maybe with the FJ calipers you might need a thinner rotor, but with the FJR you do not...
