I have not had a 15% or 20% coupon for HF in a long time...
Condor replied to GigaWhiskey's topic in Watering Hole
About 3 months ago one of the clerks told me they were selling 'Prefered' customer memberships, and will soon stop sending out the flyers. $29 bucks per year if I remember correctly. I've also started seeing HF pages in all sorts of magazines. Motorcycle, boating, etc. I haven't been approached to buy a membership lately, but it looks like the flyers have stopped. I buy a lot of little doo-dad stuff from HF, and I think I have one each of everything in the catalog. I already have a bunch of tools/equipment, so couldn't see needing anything big in the long run.. So I passed on joining.... besides I'm broke. -
Hey Chris, You're going to have to remove the middle gear cover to get to the selector on the casing. The attached pics show what to look for. You'll need to pick up an 'O' ring from Yamaha, a middle gear cover gasket, and might as well get a fresh crush washer for the bottom screw on the cover. If the plastic board is still OK, then it's just a matter of pulling the selector out and replacing the 'O' ring while hanging on the wiring.. Long needle nose.... If the board is broken it can be repaired. I remember one member backing it with an thin aluminum plate. Others have used plastic weld. It's best to try and repair while hanging, otherwise you'll need to unplug the part and get it out of there. The pig tail is about 14" long. I found an extra on Ebay for $5 bucks plus a couple of bucks shipping. I haven't seen any lately, but summers coming. Things will pick up. Hope this helps. And let me know if there's anything else I may have overlooked.

Heal up quick Earl. I feel your pain..... Uhh?? Nope that's mine.

Forget the gauge. How much fuel did it take to top it off for miles traveled??? You need to get down to the basics and figure out exactely how many miles you are actually getting to the gallon. 'About's' don't count. My '83 will get 150 miles to the last bar. Top it off, and it only takes 3.0 to 3.4 gallons. It's a 5 gallon tank. Depending on riding milage can range from 38mpg on the slab at 75mph to 50mpg riding in the mountain twisties and never getting into 5th and very little 4th.

Tail Pipe Expander
Condor replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Yep, broke mine too. I did get the pipe expanded. I used an air impact, and probably overkill... I'd suggest if anyone's going to buy one of these things to use it quick and then take it back to HB for a refund.... after it breaks... -
I love to play along with these jerks. Make them think they've hooked a sucker.... They finally quit answering their email. I also use a hotmail address.

The only question I have with a taller 6th gear on a Ventuer is... Why is changing to a lower V-Max/FJR final so appealing? Also... because these V4's perform best at higher RPM ranges... wind resistence, and higher engine loads will cause the gas milage to tank..... 2

A few various almost free MKI parts for shipping costs
Condor replied to dingy's topic in Watering Hole
Had the same problem. Wrestled with it for what seems like forever on the '91. There were 2 leaks, and then a 3rd developed before all the holes in the dyke were plugged. Check the gear selector sensor on the engine casing behind the middle gear cover. Check the wire feed plug into the stator. A new sensor 'O' ring solved the main leak. We used Herb's cut-away cover to finally locate it. Then the OEM middle gear cover started leaking like a sieve. A fresh middle gasket, new crush washer on the bottom screw, and RTV on the lower half of the gasket sealed everything up. It still marks it's spot with about one drop every week or so. But frankly Charlotte I don't give a d@mn..... -
Low vacumn during carb syncing
Condor replied to Scudrunner's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had low vacuum at idle with my '83. Concerning at first, but like your's it ran great. So I just followed CarbTune's suggestion, turned the gauge upside down, and sync'd it. -
Better late than never Larry. Had to go out and buy a '99 just to be able to order a set... I just Paypal'd you the funds. Many Thanks

I guess I lucked out. After reading all the reports posted here over the years about the dreaded 'whine'...'chirp' I expected to be another RSV owner standing in line with a complaint. Not so... ... Knock on wood. My new2me '99RSV #81 w/47,000 miles doesn't sound any different than any of the 1stGens I owned. An ever so slight 'turbo' whine sound at lower RPM's, and completely gone at mid to high engine speeds. I estimate the sound to be... since there is no tach... below 2000 rpm. I'm a happy camper. If I did get one that made the noise one of the things I'd contimplated was putting a 1stGen clutch basket and clutch in it to see if things didn't improve. Now I guess I don't have to...

I'm pretty much an ATGATT guy, but it's a PITA putting all the stuff on just to ride a couple of blocks for local errands.... so I take the car. Full gear on day rides and overnighters.

If you check the back side of the ignition switch housing the key code and blank code are there. No need to pull anything. Take the #'s to the locksmith and he'll be able to cut a key....

Kick stand reminder.......again.
Condor replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One of the big reasons that these bolts are breaking is when the kickstand starts to get a little sloppy the first thing that's done is to torque down on the bolt to take some of the wiggle out of the side stand. It doesn't work. So the bolt is tightened some more to the point it's over torqued. Finally we give up and figure that's the way it's going to be, and we'll live with it. Tightening the pivot bolt will do absolutely nothing to take the looseness out of a side stand, but it will over torque the bolt to the point that later on down the road the bolt will snap. It's a shouldered bolt. It only tightens against the face of the threaded side of the pivot yoke. That's why there's a lock nut on the bolt. When the bolt does break, generally what happens is the yoke will deform as the bike goes down. The bent yoke is a result of the snapped bolt, and from experience it's a PITA to align the thing back up again. It has to be perfectly aligned for the new bolt to start to thread. So if you've been trying to take the slop out of your sidestand by tightening the bolt you might want to loosen it back up and then just snug it down, or you'll be picking the scoot off the ground. -
Just put a set on the '99RSV on Tuesday. Got them from Jake Wilson in Utah. I checked the DOT date and they were about 3-4 months old... can't remember the exact dot code... Due to the newness of the design I don't think you'll be finding any E3's over a year old....., but that said I see one post where they got tires from '05. I didn't know E3's had been around that long..

Use a soft soapy brush to get the painted areas cleaned up and 0000 steel wool for the exposed aluminum. Afterwards scrub down the aluminum to remove any steel bits that still might be left. Since it's a PITA to get to, on the back tire I'll put the bike on the center stand in first gear with the engine idling, and use the steel wool on the bead area. Works great.

I've always had good results drilling the head of the hex off, removing the bracket and then using a stud remover to get the remainder of the hex out. I had the same problem removing the hex screw holding on the clutch slave... that's why I own a set of the stud removers in the first place.... The set I picked up is more like a set of sockets with internal rods that bind on the stud as it backed out. Due to the limited space to work in, the traditional removers like those found at Harbor Freight, I had to search around to find something that would work. Here's a LINK I don't need it a lot, but when I do it's been a great time saver...

Dang that looks nice... I'm a sucker for high gloss black... Doesn't even look like the same bike....

We love that town.... Where are you staying? The wife and I did 7 days in PV about 10 years ago and stayed at the Krystal. If you get the chance try eating at 'La Placita' up in the neighborhood. The Krystal also sells time shares, and if you let them grind on you for an hour they will give you a free breakfast... awesome... and a 2fer1 on any tour of your chosing. I just asked what the most expensive tour was and we did that. All day catamaran ride with catered lunch at ChiChi's, drinks, and snacks. $55 bucks for both of us. Another lunch experience is at Chino's Paraiso up in the jungle. Hope you folks have a great time.....

Ya know I find that hard to believe. Either Yamaha isn't doing anything, or they have the tightest security known to God!! ... or the CIA. Maybe they threaten their employees with penalty of death if they say anything??? They just don't do R&D, and retool for a new model ovenight. Anticipation... the tease... is one of the best selling tools around.

Another spin on the Venture saga is the sales pipeline is full. Back in '83 Yamaha dealt with a market that was vertually void of existing product, and sold the 'H' out of the Venture. Honda did too, with the Wing. Long range touring in comfort, and not ending up on a stretcher at the end of the day was a fairly new concept for a metric. Harley had been offering baggers for a while, but their downfall was their reliability. The Venture also appealed to the older rider who had the funds to buy one of these tourers. At the end of the 1stGen run in '93 sales had slowed considerably. Then along came the 2ndGen.... kind of like 'New Improved Tide' it stired the pot and sales picked up, but not anywhere near the numbers produced in the begining. One of the big drawbacks was the longivity of the V4 motor, and the appeal of riding an older bike with the same motor as the latest offering. So, any new Venture will fall on a market glutted with reliable tourers, that are still very capable for long range touring, and any new model will certainly fall on and very limited market. Couple that with an economy that is going to take years to gain back the confidence to spend large amounts of cash for a non-neccessary item, and I don't think we'll be seeing anything new for sometime....
