If you check the back side of the ignition switch housing the key code and blank code are there. No need to pull anything. Take the #'s to the locksmith and he'll be able to cut a key....

Kick stand reminder.......again.
Condor replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One of the big reasons that these bolts are breaking is when the kickstand starts to get a little sloppy the first thing that's done is to torque down on the bolt to take some of the wiggle out of the side stand. It doesn't work. So the bolt is tightened some more to the point it's over torqued. Finally we give up and figure that's the way it's going to be, and we'll live with it. Tightening the pivot bolt will do absolutely nothing to take the looseness out of a side stand, but it will over torque the bolt to the point that later on down the road the bolt will snap. It's a shouldered bolt. It only tightens against the face of the threaded side of the pivot yoke. That's why there's a lock nut on the bolt. When the bolt does break, generally what happens is the yoke will deform as the bike goes down. The bent yoke is a result of the snapped bolt, and from experience it's a PITA to align the thing back up again. It has to be perfectly aligned for the new bolt to start to thread. So if you've been trying to take the slop out of your sidestand by tightening the bolt you might want to loosen it back up and then just snug it down, or you'll be picking the scoot off the ground. -
Just put a set on the '99RSV on Tuesday. Got them from Jake Wilson in Utah. I checked the DOT date and they were about 3-4 months old... can't remember the exact dot code... Due to the newness of the design I don't think you'll be finding any E3's over a year old....., but that said I see one post where they got tires from '05. I didn't know E3's had been around that long..

Use a soft soapy brush to get the painted areas cleaned up and 0000 steel wool for the exposed aluminum. Afterwards scrub down the aluminum to remove any steel bits that still might be left. Since it's a PITA to get to, on the back tire I'll put the bike on the center stand in first gear with the engine idling, and use the steel wool on the bead area. Works great.

I've always had good results drilling the head of the hex off, removing the bracket and then using a stud remover to get the remainder of the hex out. I had the same problem removing the hex screw holding on the clutch slave... that's why I own a set of the stud removers in the first place.... The set I picked up is more like a set of sockets with internal rods that bind on the stud as it backed out. Due to the limited space to work in, the traditional removers like those found at Harbor Freight, I had to search around to find something that would work. Here's a LINK I don't need it a lot, but when I do it's been a great time saver...

Dang that looks nice... I'm a sucker for high gloss black... Doesn't even look like the same bike....

We love that town.... Where are you staying? The wife and I did 7 days in PV about 10 years ago and stayed at the Krystal. If you get the chance try eating at 'La Placita' up in the neighborhood. The Krystal also sells time shares, and if you let them grind on you for an hour they will give you a free breakfast... awesome... and a 2fer1 on any tour of your chosing. I just asked what the most expensive tour was and we did that. All day catamaran ride with catered lunch at ChiChi's, drinks, and snacks. $55 bucks for both of us. Another lunch experience is at Chino's Paraiso up in the jungle. Hope you folks have a great time.....

Ya know I find that hard to believe. Either Yamaha isn't doing anything, or they have the tightest security known to God!! ... or the CIA. Maybe they threaten their employees with penalty of death if they say anything??? They just don't do R&D, and retool for a new model ovenight. Anticipation... the tease... is one of the best selling tools around.

Another spin on the Venture saga is the sales pipeline is full. Back in '83 Yamaha dealt with a market that was vertually void of existing product, and sold the 'H' out of the Venture. Honda did too, with the Wing. Long range touring in comfort, and not ending up on a stretcher at the end of the day was a fairly new concept for a metric. Harley had been offering baggers for a while, but their downfall was their reliability. The Venture also appealed to the older rider who had the funds to buy one of these tourers. At the end of the 1stGen run in '93 sales had slowed considerably. Then along came the 2ndGen.... kind of like 'New Improved Tide' it stired the pot and sales picked up, but not anywhere near the numbers produced in the begining. One of the big drawbacks was the longivity of the V4 motor, and the appeal of riding an older bike with the same motor as the latest offering. So, any new Venture will fall on a market glutted with reliable tourers, that are still very capable for long range touring, and any new model will certainly fall on and very limited market. Couple that with an economy that is going to take years to gain back the confidence to spend large amounts of cash for a non-neccessary item, and I don't think we'll be seeing anything new for sometime.... And good old Cal-e-fornia is missing from the list. CARB strikes again....

I'm going to see if I can adjust the heel peg to set below the floorboard. I've got a big foot and may be able to handle a high toe peg?? I'll give that a shot before doing the amputation....

Well..... Crud!! Called Monty's lead, and they didn't have one in stock although they did show it on the web. I even put one in the basket and they jacked up the price to $104 bucks. Man that was quick... same results. Called a couple of other big dealers...same response. Looks like I'm gonna half to take a heel/toe to surgery.... Meanwhile I'll just keep on hanging shifts.... Grrr!!!!

carburetor help
Condor replied to dunkins1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Helps a bunch when you have all the facts.... The overflow lines run toward the rear over the heat shield and come out in front of the rear tire. If left off I can see fuel possibily runing down onto the headers and collector. POOF!! Ya gotta love dem UPS drivers. -
Thanks Monty. That's what I was looking for. Did a search on the part number and ran into this PDF file. Looks like something everyone should have stored away for a cross reference.....

This isn't the first time I've heard of the problem. But it's been with big outboard motors. A lot of dealers are getting hit with carb problems on 1 and 2 year old boats. Might be good info to kep on file.....

carburetor help
Condor replied to dunkins1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sounds like whoever rebuilt the carbs didn't do a very good job and pull the bowl covers off to clean out the crud. You probably have something in the valve seats holding them open. Time to pull them and take them back for a redo..... Hope the rebuilder didn't charge a lot.... -
On the Streetpilot c550 I just loaded up a bunch of my CD's, and stored individual tunes. Ripped the CD's to the computor, then converted them to MP3, and loaded them on the GPS with an 8gig card. I downloaded a free converter http://www.wma-mp3.org/ off the net. There's a bunch of them but this one seemed to have no hidden agenda.... One of my favorite CD's is Starbucks Night on the Delta. Great CD if you like Bayou Jazz. Before the HD fried I used to have a cut of 'Sea Lion Woman' from the movie General's Daughter. If you like hot humid traditional jazz this is the one. Gotta get another copy. Another rip would be 'The Jazz Singer' from the movie 7days-7Nights. I guess most of the stuff I have loaded on the GPS are Jazz/Classical with a heavy beat. Not that I don't like some of the faster stuff, I just don't think my brain needs any more up-tempo type input than it already has.... Plus a little Jimmy Buffet never hurt anyone....

That's always an option, but if I screw it up there's no way to undo it. A member did post a part number for the toe shifter a while back, and there's gotta be one laying around on a dealer shelf somewhere. Another alternative might be to find one from a set of forward controls on a chopper and see if it can be adapted?? It'd still be nice to keep it an all Star.

Anyone remember what the part number is for the tow only shift arm for a 2nd Gen??? I know I read on the board some place where Yamaha makes one..... I'd do a search, but I don't even know what they are called....

Yamalube, Clutch Slip???
Condor replied to Ga Dawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It wasn't the oil. A couple possible things have occured since it's heat related and got worse the longer you rode. The expansion hole in the reserve is plugged up. The DOT 3 needs to be changed. The reserve is over full. Take care of those items and the clutch will return to normal. My 2¢ -
Black Owl sent me a really cool set of covers he made out of leather that snap on and float above the dust seal. I'll take a pic later today when I get the chance. Been trying to talk him out of another set but he keeps ignoring me....

In this economy and with the current state of the new motorcycle biz I think any thoughts of a new Venture is wishfull thinking. I wouldn't hold my breath for a new 2011..... Maybe 12 or 13...or....??
