83 vr Front Suspension
Condor replied to fisheyes's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Instead of rebuilding your '83 forks, why don't you upgrade the entire front end by replacing them with MKII forks, MKII rotors, and R1 Calipers. You'll be amazed at he difference in stopping power. All this stuff can be found on Ebay for very little. Entire triple trees sell for $65 to $75 bucks, Calipers go for $30-$35, and the rotors usually run $20-$25. So for $150 bucks you've got first class brakes... and progressive suspension. -

Old fluid has moisture in it. When things start getting hot the moisture will start to boil and expand pushing on the slave rods just like squeezing the clutch lever.... That's why you should bleed the clutch every two years at the minimum....

Last year in Cody we had 15 of us go over the pass on a group ride without a hitch. Even my '83VR acted like we were at sea level....

AT&T here. We have a roll-over family plan that isn't offered. Actually it was grandfathered in as a default when AT&T bought my previous carrier. I haven't searched for a wireless for over 20 years. The companies kept being bought out, and we kept getting absorbed. I think AT&T may be the last stop?? I've had a few issues with AT&T over the years, but I suspect that everyone has issues with any company they are with over time. One thing I can say is all my issues were resolved very well. You just have to keep an eye on 'm.....

1983 venture carb need some info
Condor replied to Freeman50's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm just assuming here, but I think you mean the entire 4 carb assembly. The '83 was sort of a 'beta' model, and unfortunately the only 'bolt and go' set would be from another '83. Other sets can be run, but they take a little more than bolt and go.... -

Rubbermaid is the same way. My first experience with them was after I bought a large fishing tackle box out of the West Marine bargain bin for $5.00 Bucks because it had a broken handle and tabs. So I wrote down the part numbers and called Rubbermaid to buy the parts and fix the box. They didn't have the parts so they sent me a brand new replacement box. No Charge. I then pop-riveted the outer tabs shut and installed a rope handle. I still have both boxes. The second time I bought a bunch of marine/boating equipment from a guy. The misc. stuff came in a Rubbermaid chest. The body of the chest was great but the top was toast. Called RubberMade again. They didn't have the part and no longer made the chest. They sent me a check for the retail cost of the chest.... I never turn down anything made by Rubbermaid.... They've got a lifetime customer...

I think I'm one of the lucky ones when it comes to whine. I do get it, but it's not much different from what I had on the '83. 1st and 2nd gears sounded like a mild turbo building boost and by the time I hit third it was gone. Same thing on the '99. That I can live with. However... When I first bought the '83 it had a lot of internal engine noise. The first oil change I used Valvoline 20-50 MC Wet Clutch, and could not believe how much quieter the engine ran. Hard to believe that just an oil change would be that effective. Kinda hoping I'll get the same results with the '99, as it a little rattley too... BTW the VIN number on the '99 is #00089.

I've been too busy wrestling with the leak in the '91 to do anything else, but now that it's down to a Harley Drip it's on to other issues. Mainly the CLASS controller. What a saga. The controller was giving E1 and E4 errors, so I tore into it and did some PCB soldering. Now I'm not the greatest solderer in the world, but I'm not all that bad either. After working over all the brown rings I hooked the controller back up and .... nothing. I could get the pump to give a couple of beats and then quit by plugging and unpluging the coupler. So I went ahead and piggybacked another compressor and it did the same thing. This told me it wasn't the pump, but the controller. So I drug out another controller and plugged it in. E4 error. So soldered it's PC. Plugged it back in. E4 error. Grrrr!!!!!! OK, one more time. I soldered everything I could see with a magnifying glass. Ate dinner. Went back out. Plugged it in and the CLASS ran like a champ. I would have taken the bike out for a ride this morning but due to forseen circumstnces it's going to be Monday. Gonna be strange sitting on a 1stGen again. So the lesson is... If at first you don't succeed...try..try...again....

Let me know how it works out Buddy.. I still haven't changed the oil on the '99, but after all this input I feel a more positive about synthetic. Now I just have to figure out whether it's Rotella T6 syn, or Mobile 1MC.... Plus the cheapest place to invest my bucks...

This is a great post. I just picked up a set on fins off Ebay with the thought of doing something with them. Shoot them black (powder coat maybe??) and polish out the edges?? I can't afford the $400+ bucks, so I guess that's what I'll do. At least now I'll have some idea of the 'look'.

I know what he said, and I did check his profile to see what he was pedaling.... But.... was he talking about the LUGGAGE RACK or the TRUNK (underneath) RACK, and was he talking about a duffle type luggage rack bag, or a set of soft saddlebags after he removed the hard saddles????? Hey it's a old age thing....

Even tho your milage is exceptional it's not uncommon to get high mpg's when taking it easy. 5th gear and wind resistence are the enemy.....
