  1. There are several studies that have been done about hearing loss and wind noise while wearing a helmet and riding a motorcycle. It may be the biggest contributing factor why so many of us need hearing aids....?? Here's a excerpt from one such article at: http://www.ridemyown.com/articles/safety/earplugs.shtml Now how does all this tie into riding motorcycles? Well, we all know that there is a lot of wind noise when we ride at speeds of about fifty miles per hour or more. And for those of us who ride with little or no fairing or windshield this noise can be pretty loud. Exposure to this degree of noise will cause damage to those hair cells that are located in the hearing portion of our ears. This is not a “maybe will cause“, but is a “it will cause“ situation. How much damage and how long before enough damage is done before we notice is unpredictable. Some people are much more susceptible than others and may sustain damage much, much sooner than someone else exposed to the same conditions. And this is where ear plugs will help. I’ve focused on wind noise, but any relatively loud noise will do the same thing-loud exhaust systems, hammering, power tools, lawn mowers (yes including the new quiet ones), weed eaters, and on and on. The use of ear plugs will certainly lower the volume of the noise you are exposed to, but surprisingly will aid your hearing to some degree at freeway speeds. The frequency (pitch) of the wind noise is very effectively muted while lower frequencies much less so. Now don’t get me wrong, you’re not going to put in ear plugs and go out for a ride and find no wind noise, but the wonderful mechanical and exhaust sounds unaffected. But, what you will find is that you’ll still be able to hear the engine well enough to gauge engine speed or telltale signs of a problem. You’ll also be surprised just how tiring the wind noise had been and how much less fatigue there will be after a ride. I routinely ride with a half dozen other people who rarely if ever used ear plugs until I started riding with them. Five of the six now routinely use them, and the sixth does when he thinks about it. Each of my friends already has some degree of hearing loss and each thought what difference will wearing ear plugs make if I already have trouble hearing. Beside being less tired at the end of a ride, by using plugs they are protecting what hearing they have left. The damage that has already been done is permanent, but if a person does not protect what hearing they have, further damage will occur. Whatever loss you presently have will worsen if you continue to subject yourself to loud noise
  2. Hey it has somethin' to do with water....
  3. Yeah, and to think my first major in college was Electrical Engr. Good thing I switched to Marine Biology huh?? :rotf:
  4. I think it does have a DVI, but it doesn't have the flat spade like the one in the pic that I posted.... What's the advantage of DVI over VGA??
  5. Wish that was the problem on this one. Just checked both ends of the cable. Everything is perfect.....

Your ignition switch may have gone bad and replaced... with a new key.. My '99 has just one...
  7. That's the plug from the old monitor and apparently it works fine. Nice to know what to call it. I'm going to invest in another VGA cable and see what happens. If it's still FUBAR I'll return the thing to WOOT. Too bad 'cause it's a great monitor for the money.....
  8. It does have an HDMI port. Maybe I'll give that a try. Already tried that... No luck... Here's a pic of the plug Rick. You tell me... I've never run into one of these before. It came with the 19" Dell LCD Monitor. The card has this and a VGA port in it... The old monitor has a VGA port also. At least it looks like a VGA... 9 pin..?? The new monitor has an HDMI. Don't see why it can't be hooked up to a cable box??
  9. Thanks Rick. I did, and installed the updated driver for the Monitor. Rebooted. Still no good news. I can't verify the VGA cable is good since I don't have another to compare it to... It may be the cable???
  10. Need some advice guys. I picked up a refurb 'famous maker' (HP ) 23" LED monitor off WOOT a couple of weeks ago. Installed it using the VGA cable and I'm not getting any reds ecept when I bring up the internal RBG control menu. On the internal RGB adjustment the bar shows nice red/green/blue colors, but the screen is only shows BLUE and GREEN. Thought it might be the VGA cable so fiddled with it, but no improvement(red). The computor is a DELL XPS 400 that I picked up 2-3 years ago. I have no problem with the color display with the original Dell Monitor using their priority cable, but now I'm wondering if the original Graphics Card is doing it's job?? The optimum resolution is 1920x1080. I can get close and the screen is really sharp but the resolution adjustment only offers 13 something by 8 something?? WOOT offered to take it back at their cost, but I'm not ready to give up on this thing yet. Any ideas??
  11. Been thinking about it....
  12. OK, been reading all the comments and have decided to go with the Iridiums for the '99. Why?? Even though there may not be any perceived performance boost, the longer life is appealing as it's a PITA pulling the tank to change plugs on an RSV. The fewer times I have to do it the better. Also if they do last longer they will continue to offer good ignition long after a set of standard plugs start to fade. I just ordered a set of 4 off the web for $6 bucks per. It may not be the best price, but I figured it was close... BTW I'm running K&N's and Bubbs with no change in the jetting. The tips of the Bubbs are a nice deep chocolate brown. Seems like the jetting is good.
  13. A large screw driver will work just as well.....
  14. So Mama asks me to go up to the store and pick up a couple of things she needs. I didn't want to get out of the recliner, but she also mentioned Ice Cream. I moved.... On the way to the store I get behind a neat little Honda Trail 90. Mint condition. We both stop at the signal light on the main drag and wait. We get a green light and arrow. The Honda goes across the blvd, I make a left. The Honda gets to the other side of the 4 lanes and I'm about 20 feet behind him making the left and right between us a late model Toyota type flys thru the intersection doing about 40mph. Scared the living cr@p out of me. Missed the front end of the Suburban by 2 feet. If I had been in a hurry I'd have been laying next to Ponch. Not really sure I would have made it, and if the driver had hit the Honda he'd have killed him.... Whew!! Ice Cream tasted extra special tonight....
  15. I replace the slaves with new rather than rebuild.... It's a PITA getting the slave out... It may be easier on a 2ndGen??....and I didn't want to chance a rebuild and have to do it again. Beside the cost of a new slave isn't all that much in the scheme of things...
  16. I did go to their site, and I'd need more reassurance that these will actually fit a 1stGen than a response from a site search engine... I recently bought a RAM mount for my Garmin GPS using their site search engine. Spent $40 bucks on it and it didn't work. So sometimes these sites take liberties and stretch the facts just a little. I suspect the mufflers are more a generic fit, and are not a plug and play....
  17. I bled the clutch and brakes on the '99 before leaving for Cody. The brakes looked like they'd been bled before, but when I removed the reserve cover on the clutch it looked like black ink in there, Zero visibility... I don't think they'd ever been bled, and it had received regular dealer service all it's life. I think the reason they are so neglicted on 2ndGens is to get to the bleeder valve you have to remove the fin cover. So rather than go thru the trouble, the dealer... or owner..., puts if off til next time... Another contributing factor is on the RSV's you can't see the discoloration in the sight glass very easily because it's hidden behind the audio controls. Outta sight outta mind... My
  18. Wow!!! Heck of a price. Although I quickly looked it over I didn't find any reference that they would fit the 1stGen.
  19. On the left side of the engine toward the rear there's a square rubber cover. Lift it and underneath is the slave bleeder valve. Check to see if it's tightened down snugly. You may also be able to peek in the opening to check for other leaks.
  20. For a lite weight take a look at ALUMA TRAILERS in a 6x10V if you want new. Once in a great while you can find one used.... Most of the other wood framed trailers in that size, if they're lite weight are pretty flimsy, or if they're well built are heavy, and like pulling a brick.... MY
  21. Missed the turn off for Hwy 49 and ended up running that stretch of 20. Nice road....
  22. Looks like someone is getting a little artzy fartzy there..... Nice well planned pics...
  23. So I'm sitting here listening to the evening traffic report for the Sacramento area, and so far there's been 4 MC related accidents, one a rider and passenger with ambulances, and half a dozen cage fender benders. It a damn war zone out there.... Really makes you think about when to stay in the barn... 4 is sorta unusual, but I can always plan on hearing about at least one in the AM, and one during the PM rush hour...
  24. I find that smaller sellers.. individules... will ship to Canada via USPS International flat rate. It's the larger sellers that run larger shipping depts that won't do it. Reason, there's no way to track the shipment other than UPS or Fedex, and the cost is a prohibitive. Another reason is they have a system set up, and are too lazy to change. I bet I've sent 30-40 fork braces north of the boarder to members via USPS Int flat without a hitch. The cost is over double to do it, but it doesn't take any more effort than a domestic shipment would. Everything is done online from printing the lable to paying for it. I chose to drop the item off at the PO, but I could schedule a pick up if I wanted to. I do on occasion ship very large oversized packages overseas to Spain, Italy, Germany etc. using UPS because of size restrictions with USPS. But if I can get away with it I'll use USPS everytime....
