There's been a lot of 'how to' plastic repair videos over the years, and the one thing most of them show is how messy hot welding plastic can be. I for one don't care for the results. For years I've been using IPS Weld-On Cement. What it does is chemically melt the ABS edges and allow them to bond back together. http://www.tapplastics.com/uploads/products/images/fullsize/standard/446_wo2354.jpg Once the IPS flashes off the crack is completely gone, and the plastic is welded together across the entire break. When welding with heat all you accomplish is melting the top and back surfaces together, but inside the break it's... still broken and will break again without some sort of reinforcement, or unless you've globbed on a ton of plastic and it looks double ugly... With IPS the crack is as strong as the original... and it will look good. In some instances it's hard to tell it's been repaired. One of the big reasons the tabs break, is that the gromet has a crush sleeve that will limit the amount of compression that can be applied to the tab. Lose the sleeve and the tab will be the next to go because of over tightening. So, just because the break is back to OEM specs, it'll probably break again unless the sleeve has been replaced in the gromet. For those areas that could still use some reinforcing regular glass mat will work very well on the back side or inside of the crack. For this I use IPS 16. http://www.tapplastics.com/uploads/products/images/fullsize/standard/611_weldon16.jpg Spread a thin coat of the 16 on the backside of the repaired crack and after about 2-3 minutes lay the glass matt over the tacky area. Once the glass mat is stuck ,wet it out with more of the 16... this can also be thin.. until the mat is completely covered and let dry for a couple of hours. The results will amaze you. You can not beat this type of repair. It's easy, clean, and super strong. My IPS

I usually get up pretty early and early in the AM I have to wade thru a bunch of infomercials about every supliment pill out there on the radio, and the 'new improved' too. Hey anyone ever heard of Dr Pinkus?? Anywho, Vitamin D deficiency is the new in pill. The symptoms match me to a T. Not sure if it's D deficiency, or juat plain old age, but been thinking about giving it a try... Either that or start riding topless.....

Thanks Don. Missed this post the first time around. Looks like this one escaped the recall. I wonder how long that recall is in effect??? This could get interesting...

Thanks for that video. It explains a lot.... and my need to get rid of the rig, and replace it with SOP stick clamps. I'll stick to LPG to heat up metal. What I need out of the welder is just something to do some spot tacking, and very little of that. Thanks guys, I apprreciate all the help and suggestions....

In a perfect world you're right, but in reality it doesn't always work out that way. I wonder just how long it would take someone to pass a snail moving motorhome when it was safe.... double yellow or no?? 1 mile.. 5 miles.. 10 miles?? On the accident, I wonder how many would have had the same thing happen to them in the same situation. Steering out of a high side looks good on paper and can be discussed ad nausium, but in real life in an elbows and a$$holes situation, when everything is happening in a nano-second, all the training in the world isn't going to keep you safe.

Yeah I kinda thought of that right after I posted the thread.... Still wouldn't want to have the tips touch while turned on. I think I'll invest in some new leads...

Need some help guys. I've been looking for a small welder to do some light welding and picked up one at an auction this past weekend. It's a small Home-n-Shop Craftsman stick welder that has the goofyest lead set up I've ever seen. Wondering if any of our resident welders might have a clue on what it is and how they're used.... Pics attached.

4th and 5th pins behind the clutch basket have probably fallen out. Not a difficult repair. Here's a link to the problem. The tech write up is for a 1stGen but should apply to your RSTD as well. Also I believe that a 'new improved' segment off a RSV will be an upgrade... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40713

Classic example of high siding. Gotta love dem delinked brakes... They were both in the wrong passing on a double yellow. The car had already been passed by the first two bikes and they were also double yellow illegal. That's what happens when these guys think they're on super bikes and a closed track. Testosterone time looking for an accident to happen. My opinion... rider was at fault for exceeding his ability and passing illegally, and the car should have beeen cited for an illigal pass.... if they ever found him or her?? IMVHO

Ebc brake rotors
Condor replied to ptynning's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have an EBC rotor on the back of the '91. Rusts up like an SOB if not used regularly..... If I ever need to replace it I'll go stainless.... -
83 Venture...help!!!!
Condor replied to Brianb's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
All good suggestions, and should eventually be done, but I'd start with the battery if it's fairly old. I had the same thing happen on my '83. Swapped out the rectifier, soldered the whites, and a new AGM battery. Problem solved. -

Now I'm wondering if you don't have a bad spot on the starter armature or a direct to ground short?? I don't know what amps the starter solenoid is rated for but I imagine it'd take a bunch to burn one out.... Might be time to pull the starter, rebrush and clean, and check the cables??
-
Did you have it in neutral?? Sometimes after sitting in gear a long time the clutch plates will stick together and even tho the lever pulled they don't disengage. When you rocked the bike they may have broken loose??? This is just a wild a$$ guess???

All that stuff is cool, but..... as fast as these things fire they only deliver 180 rounds due to barrel length, and reloading's a b1tch. I think that's why we don't see them on the battle field. Long range accuracy would also be a question due to the short travel of the bullet over the lans and grooves. In essence the usuable portion of the barrel is only 3-4 inches. Close range they would be deadly. Plus do they take AA or AAA's Actually Daisy made a caseless 22cal rifle, where the propellant was ignited by high pressure air, and they did work. I wholesaled a few them back in the late 60's. It was an interesting gun but I haven't seen or heard about them since.
