  1. On older bikes the possibility of air leaks is greater with the YICS hooked up. Sometimes it helps to disconnect it. On the '83 there is one hose that needs to be left alone from the #2 carb to the booster. Should always be checked and replaced as needed....
  2. Are you using a multi-meter or one of those permanent aftermarket lcd dash displays to check voltage?? You might try another multi-meter. I don't trust those on dash models. With what you're saying it's possible you might have a bad rectifier.... Unless you've changed the location of the rectifier it does get pretty hot where it's mounted. However.... I've run my '83VR with a DEKA acrossed Nevada in 100+ temps for 1000+ miles and never had a problem with the battery not staying charged. PS. I don't know if it's already been mentioned but have you cleaned the battery ground wire where it attaches to the frame down by the waterpump on the right side of the bike?? A bad ground will screw things up...

  4. If there were more than just hearsay about one tool breaking it might be a good reason, but my stupid questions still stand... MOF I can't imagine how anyone could have broken one of these tools unless it was misused?? or there was a big flaw in the casting???
  5. OK, I have a couple of stupid questions..... Why does this thing need to be hardened, or made out of steel?? It just compresses the valve spring, who cares how accurate it compresses them?? How many times will it be used in it's lifetime?? Also why can't it be made out of easier to machine T-6 aluminum??? Heck, I bet it could be made out of plastic...
  6. Lets face it. The Venture is dead... If Y does release a 2013 it will only be a different color. Nothing more. I bet there hasn't been a Venture off the assembly line in 3-4 years, and once the warehouses are empty of crated bikes it'll be over. It all boils down to the almighty buck. If they can't make a decent profit on the bike they're going to go another direction. The way the economy has been declining for the last 4 years they're going with the cheaper to build, and affortable off-road and street bikes. That's where the market and dollars are. They're not stupid. IMHO.....
  7. I'm with Goose on this one. Somehow the crankcase breather has been kinked. It runs from the top of the 'twinkie' in the valley of the V to the base of the air cleaner box. It's a real challenge for those of us with big hands to get in there and hook it up properly. The hose itself has a dog leg in it, and it's needed to snake through the carb linkage. A regular replacement hose won't work as it will kink when it's bent causing the blockage...
  8. Youse guys are just lucky I didn't buy any tickets....... AND... You're welcome ELDR....
  9. ABS has a molded memory, and doesn't bend out of shape unless it's held in one position for a very long time and it takes a set. I wonder if it's not the hinges that may be tweeked or the metal lip between the two halves being out of shape. Another thing you might try is loosen all mounting hardware and see if the halves close right. The bottom may be torque because of misaligned brackets??
  10. Not really.... After 3-4 years maybe... Since you might have a drain on the batt when sitting you might want to have your Yamaha dealer check it out. If I leave my audio system on when in storage it will cause the amps to disappear somewhere...
  11. I do really well in 90+ temps wearing a roomy armored textile jacket that allows air to circulate into the arms and out the back thru zippered vents, plus a http://coolwingrider.com/ and a cooler full of GatorAid to hydrate every time I pull into a rest stop or fuel up. Matter of fact I wear the jacket in cool weather too. Just zip up the vents and the trapped air keeps me fairly warm in temps down into the low 40's, and it's loose enough to layer on a sweat shirt with room to spare..... I really like this jacket.... http://www.power-trip.com/ for those who might be interested....
  12. Thanks for the info. I'm 6'6" and.... ahem.... around 350# Best feedback I've seen so far.... Got the link saved...
  13. It looks like it comes from around the cruise control area??? #24 on the lin k below... http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1984/VENTURE%20ROYALE%20-%20XVZ1200DL/ELECTRICAL%201/parts.html
  14. Oh Man...!!! Too close.. Praying for the surgeons hands and a complete cure. I hate cancer.....
  15. And I've notified the California National Guard to stand watch on my garage due to previous remarks made by Venture member listed at the top of this thread......
  16. We get some pretty healthy winds on occasion. 50-60mph+. Anyone vouch for high wind performance??
  17. Restored a '69 CB750 with a sand cast engine from the ground up. Fun ride, then someone rode it liked they stoled it. Got it back in pieces with a $150 storage bill from the wrecking yard.... Gave what was left to a young kid for a project... On the bike of the century.... it was a game changer. Affordable, and lots of performance.... Honda sold a ton of them.
  18. My '83 Beta model died.... Maybe they changed it in '84???
  19. It was a little bit before your time..... but if Ida known??.... Spent some time visiting a friend down in Benson. Burned up a lot of ammo in the dry wash behind his ranch.... http://www.cast-aways.com/CONDORPICS/Sam-Side.jpg
  20. If #2 won't sync it's because all the rest are too tight and are really not sync'd, even thought you think they are..... #2 carb is the bench mark carb. All other's sync to it.... Back off all the other sync screws and set the engine to idle at 1000rpm using just the idle knob. Then turn in the #1 sync screw until the rpm just starts to increase and back it off a tad. #1 should be sync'd or dam close to #2. Then hook up your sync tool and get #1 perfect. Then work on 3 and 4. They'll probably be way out but keep at it. The closer they get ballanced the rpm's will start to climb. Reach over and set the idle back down to 1000. You may have to do this a couple of times. Once you get 4 and 3 ballanced, bring the left side and right side together. It should run like a raped ape.....
  21. Just turns the screws out 2.5 turns and don't worry about it. They are the idle screws. How long are you going to let it idle???????
  22. Just the motor and carbs are worth $800, and you know their history. $300 sounds reasonable. You might want to double check to see if the storgage yard is going to add on storage fee's. It might be a deal breaker. If $300 is the total, you could look into buying an El Cheepo flat bed trailer in Vegas and towing it back. You don't have to worry about standing it up for the trip.... That's what I did when picking up the '93 in Tucson. Bought the trailer on the way down in LA.....
  23. Putting the kick stand down will always kill the engine.... Safety feature. Try pulling the middle gear cover off and you'll see the sensor sitting in there on the engine block. The screws may have loosened. Try pulling them one at a time and put a little loc-tight on the threads. Then snug them back down. Not to tight or you'll break the plastic board and get an oil leak... Not a good thing....
  24. That wave rolled through here last week. One day it topped out at 111degs. Today it's in the high 70's. So there's hope...hang in there....
  25. I have the same problem....sorta. The latch on the right side won't catch. It does stay closed but a little caddy-wompass....
