What rpm should i ride at
Condor replied to turtle's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If by 'chugging' you mean it feels like it's missing you're probably running on 3 cylinders. Another indication is in 5th gear the bike feels like it's loosing power above 5000rpm. Change the plugs and sync the carbs and you should be good to go again. With my '83 on the slab I used to run right at 4200rpm in 5th. 73mph. And I have taken it up into triple digits a few times... :-) -
I have E3's on the '99RSV and no complaints... however the '07 came with a set of fairly new Metzlers and the first time I rode it the front end felt like I was in mud... E 3's will be replacing them as soon as the bank account recovers.....

Bacon Hot Dogs? I could be in trouble here....
Condor replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Watering Hole
My favorite dinner is Rice-a-Roni and Oscar Mayer beef hot dogs, and I love bacon.... I'm starting to drool just thinking of the possibilities..... -
Millie it is, and a good name at that:thumbsup2: Due to the low speed handling of my '99RSV, I've named her....Drum roll here.... Miss Piggy.. http://www.cast-aways.com/QUICKY/misspiggy.jpg I also have a name for the '07, but the reveal will have to wait until a few more things fall into place.....

Re-fueling takes a long time
Condor replied to soraoka's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That vent that Pete is talking about is actually a breather with a check valve for keeping the fuel in the tank when layed on it side. It shouldn't interfer with filling the tank. If you're talking about filling the tank up to the neck and then it receeds after a bit, that's fairly normal as it 'burps' down. The top of your tank is fairly narrow at the top due to design. When tanking up my 1stGens, I just stuff the nozzle into the neck and when it clicks off I'm through. Trying to stuff an extra pint in the tank will take more time than it's worth... -
OK... #1 BIG Congrats on the new scoot!! #2 The color looks great. #3 But.... I can't get enthused by the angular Stelth styling. To me the bike looks boxy. I realize that it's just my tastes in bikes, but I can't see myself standing in line for one..... However.... Nina on the back will make it look a lot better....

Instead of repairing the tranny you might look at R&Ring the entire engine with one from a 1300 MKII. Most of these engines go fairly cheap on the used market. Why?? Because they last so long and after the 83-85's 2nd gear problem are pretty much bullet proof. http://www.cast-aways.com/CONDORPICS/Sam-Side.jpg

Gas mileage comparasion Venture vs RSTD
Condor replied to dave_wells's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The one thing that effects MPG more than anything else is wind resistance. Remember 'Resistence is Futile'... I don't care which bike your riding. Do 80mph in fifth gear and you'll loose 20% to 25% in engine effiency unless you have a 65mph tailwind. We've discussed this in the past, but maybe it's time to bring it up again. Fifth gear is fine for covering long distances at 75 in comfort, but don't expect to get max mpg on much over 65. Case in point. I own both 1st and 2ndGen's. With my '83 I used to get 36-38mpg around town. On my first trip of any distance, using the lower gears a lot thru the Sierras, I was surprised when I filled up to get 50mpg. I thought it was a fluke, but surprisingly others also experienced the mpg jump. Ever since, when traveling in a majority of twisties the same thing happened. 2nd-3rd-and 4th gear once in a while, engine braking into a curve and powering out, and 50mpg. On the flats 37-38. I didn't own a 2ndGen yet, but when I did buy one, the milage suffered when running on the slab, and when pulling a trailer to Cody I was lucky to get 25-26mpg. Damn!! But when I took a 160 mile ride without the trailer up to Shell Falls south east of Cody, we topped off at a station in Greybull. Up to the falls and back in twisties. Topped off again in Greybull and low and behold the bike pulled 40mpg. Same type of high mpg riding. 2nd-3rd, and 4th maybe. I might also add that pulling I-80 thru the Sierras I ran in 4th gear, and 5th the rest of the way. No difference in fuel milage. It was strictly the trailer and the added wind resistence. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.... -
When removing the front tire I need to take both calipers off first or it's a PITA getting the tire out. And... I don't use a torque wrench to re-tighten the bolts. I do keep in mind that the threads are aluminum and not 'wrench' on them too much. Snug+ does it for me. I have never had a caliper loosen up. I can see where it might happen if the front axle bearings are getting a bit worn, and starting to develop a harmonic that will loosen a bolt. My first Venture caliper had a thread striped out and I had to pick up another caliper off eBay. A little later on I had to rebearing the front wheel as I was starting to feel a slight viabration coming thru the bars. I think the bolt was loosening up on the PO and he striped the threads out trying to keep it tight. Anyway, problem solved. I did recaliper with R1's later on, but not because there was anything wrong with the OEM's...

It's gonna be interesting to see what you do with this one. You know you can't leave a bike alone.... Congrats..

Idle is hi when warm
Condor replied to Billkroeger's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Eck's suggestion will work on a 2ndGen, but it's an '85. The idle adjustment knob is on the left side behind the carb brace. If it doesn't bring the idle down when the engine warms up then one of the other carbs is controlling the idle, and as Squid suggested you need to sync the carbs. -
will any of the parts work
Condor replied to friesman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The plates and discs, and slave should be the same. Not sure about the master?? -
Charge battery to full, disconect it, and let it sit for a couple of weeks. If it still discharges the battery is bad. You can send it back to the place you bought it, as they come with a 1 year warantee. It'll ship back for a little over $10 bucks USPS Flat Rate. If it doesn't discharge it's the bike. One thing you might check. Do you have a washer under the anode connector?? This can mess up a battery's ability to take a charge.

I've used good old carb cleaner. Seems to work OK. Use nonpressured water to rinse afterwards.

I was going to order one off eBay but ran into a sale from Bike Bandit for $50 bucks each. It worked out pretty good as I bought two dark tint 10" windshilds, and since the order was over $100 bucks shipping was free. One for the '99 and one for the '07. I won't be swapping them out with a taller due to the ride, as I had a 12" wide Show Chrome on the last long trip and didn't notice any buffeting. I'm always looking over the top anyway.

I'll see what I can do for Friday night Miles. I still have teenagers I need to keep an eye on. Flat track is great. Years ago the family used to go watch them at the Tulare County Fair Grounds when in Visalia. Also went to the 'Sacramento Mile' a couple of times when we moved to Carmichael. It is a hoot. We have a couple of swap meets locally, went a couple of times but got tired of looking at old Harley parts. Tons of the stuff. Got bored and stopped going.. Is the phone number listed in your profile the house or cell??
