  1. After seeing what DOT3 does to paint I wonder what it mixed with acetone would do???
  2. They're probably glued in there from dried varnish. Personally I'd remove the covers and lift up the diaphragms and fill the cavity with Sea Foam and let them soak.... Sea Foam makes short work of varnish. Another possibility would be to find a place with a big enough ultrasonic cleaner to take the set. I know it's expensive but considering the alternative??
  3. Since you're only 150 miles from the barn, I'd find a Motel 6 or Redroof, and buy another battery at NAPA or AutoZone...or even a Walmart in the AM.... It'll get you home
  4. I went old school and the karma is good again.... The schraeders are good and the seals aren't leaking. Took that high tech digital back to Harley and exchanged it for an analog and a refund for the difference.... Piece of cake. Works perfectly. And it's nice to know that I don't have to rebuild the bike, which is what usually happens. I suspect that the Progressive and the Harley pumps are from the same manufacture, and those that I bought off eBay a few years ago are copies, which happens a lot in China. Even saw a copy of a Star Venture so nothing's sacred in Hong Kong.... Thanks everyone for the moral support.... Now gotta take Seven for a ride to see if there's any improvement in the front diving when coming to a hard stop, and handling like mush....
  5. Looks like I have another 'project'..... On the pump, I stopped by the Harley store yesterday and bought their new latest greatest digital suspension pump. My first big mistake was it had 'Made in Taiwan' on the box, My second... I didn't check it out before buying, but figured sense it had a 1 year warantee, why not... So I get it home, insert battery and go check Seven's suspension pressures. Which were were down to zip.. I'll be returning this POS later this morning. It wouldn't even pump... Now I starting to think. Could I have bad schraeder's, and can they be replaced easily?? 'Specially the forks... or do I have to replace the entire fitting?? Also I wish I knew how this dang no-loss check fitting actually functioned..or where it's located for that matter??
  6. Dang.... so that's what's been happening ever since I got Seven.....
  7. Sometimes you don't. I just called Harley and they couldn't tell me if theirs was made in the USA. He did say that they show'd theirs had been upgraded to take care of some problems they'd been having. They also have a new digital that is a beefier pump. So I'm going to go take a look at both of them. $50 bucks for the analog, and $70 for the digy.... If nothing else At least I'll have someone close by to ***** at if it doesn't hold up.
  8. When I bought the '99 I picked up a couple of suspension pumps off eBay. They were no-names, but looked exactely like the Progressive and Harley pumps. One was a low presure 0-30psi and the other reads 0-300psi. When I tried to pump up the front forks with the 0-30 it wouldn't hold the pressure after I stopped pumping. 2-3 secs. and it would bleed down to zero. I've used them in the past and they worked just fine, and unscrewed off the schreader valve without loosing any air just like they're supposed to. Now they're non-ops. Leading up to the question. Are all these pumps made by the same manufacturer, or are the no-names on the market copies?? Also are the Harley pumps made in the US. I'm thinking of paying the big price and picking up a Harley or Progressive, but if I'm not going to gain anything in quality it doesn't make sense.... BTW I did tear down the 0-300 to see if maybe the check valve might be stuck but could only go so far, and couldn't get to it. Everything looked fine, but if it's chinese you never know.... Now for the groan.. When I get on Seven in the AM the rear shock groans a bit... Nothing the rest of the day. Am I going to need a shock fairly soon???
  9. Lost my cell phone the other day so called it from my house phone. It was in my shirt pocket.......
  10. The pillow tops don't fit everyone so don't make that mistake. I know there'll be a lot of comments from riders how they think they're great, but not me, and I have the monkey butt scars to prove it. I've replaced the pillows on both of my 2ndGens with Corbins and they made a world of difference. I found one complete set on Craigslist and the other seat only on eBay. Both are like new at less than 1/2 of new price. So look around and be picky....
  11. I play a lot of solitaire to kill time for what ever reason. I don't see what the problem is?? Tell you boss to pull out his android phone and down load the Amobility solitaire app. Who in the 'H' wants to break out a computer to play a simple game anyway??
  12. What's been happening with these older 1stGen Ventures is the sidestand is something we never think of... or lube. So the bolt wears, and the sidestand gets loose and the bike leans more. So we torque down on the bolt to tighten it up. The problem is the bolt has a shoulder with a locking nut, and all the tightening in the world ain't gonna cure the problem. Eventually the bolt snaps off due to over torqing. Dingy's fix will work. Buying a new bolt and nut will too. All this for the lack of a little lube. So a bit of advice to other owners of 1stGens....and 2ndGens too. Service the side stand. Not a hard job just put it on the center stand and go for it.... I know some wise guy is going to bring up the fact that 2's don't have sidestands so it may be a little more trouble with the balancing act. My '99 has one.... And eventually, if Rivco ever get's around to it, Seven will too....
  13. So far everyone's quoting 13.4vdc when charging over 2000 rpm, and one even says 3000. You should be getting a 14.2-3vdc reading over 2000, and . If not it sounds like the stator to me???.... IMHO. The 12.8 at rest is OK, so the batt sound like it's good. Also the amp test will determine what kind of load you're getting, but if the batt isn't getting killed over night, as it's already been suggested, it's just a maintenence draw.
  14. OK I'll bite... 'Bosses Hog'

I've been picking up parts occasionally from Pinwall in Ohio ever since I bought my first Venture. Not a lot, maybe one item a year. Recently I had a need for a set of carbs for my '99RSV, and found what I thought was a good deal for a set of on eBay from Pinwall. The pics looked good and the video sho'd they came off a running bike. When they arrive they were missing a lot of parts that clearly showed were there on the eBay listing. All the numbers on the set matched with the listing so it was the same set. It looked like an employee had a need for parts and went on a little scavenger hunt. MOF if this set ever came off a running bike I'll KYA..... So I called to talk to someone about the problem. Talked to a gal in customer service, and she said the parts are not to be touched, but obviously this set had been. I told her the simplest solution would be to send me the missing parts of which I had a list, but she wouldn't have it and went through their stock and ended up sending me another set off an '07 that were listed on eBay for $100 more. I offered to send the first set back, and she told me to keep them.... So now for my trouble I have a complete set of diaphragms for my 'stash'. I think Pinwall went way out of their way on this one....
  16. Running 75-80mph in 5th gear and you're bucking wind and lugging the engine. 37-38mpg is about all you can expect. But what the hey... it's fun. Now try taking a 150 mile ride in the twisties, compression braking into the curves, powering out, and using 2nd-3rd-4th gears. Stay out of 5th. Run the whole tank and fill it and do the math. I bet you're gonna be surprised at what kind of MPG's you got. These V4's love high RPMs, and are a woose in low end torque. So don't lug'm....
  17. Send him on out, he'll fit right in.... I'm gonna have to go take a look at the backside of this bar and see what I'm dealing with, and what the 'H' I'm talking about. Gotta stop assuming.... I do have an OEM trunk light bar...one of those wing affairs... that I plan on putting on the '99, and it has 3 wires coming out of it. Red/Black/and Orange. When I tested it with a 9vdc battery all leds came on, so I assumed the the orange was probably for brakes, and that's what my feable mind assumed' was how this bar on the '07 worked?? So stay tuned, I'm going in....
  18. A little Mannheim Steamroller going on there... The fret work was awesome, but she really lost me with the pick.....
  19. I wasn't sure what their function was, but FYI the hoses that come off the T are 1/4IDx3/8ODx25" I kinda thought they were overflows??
  20. I don't think so. Just brake and running, and I'm not sure about brake as I'm not quick enough to squeeze the grip and then run to the back to see if it brakes... MOF I do have one fairly close The one that on the bike now doesn't have the bling factor and is a little narrower then Diamond R's... Thanks for the info, and I may get back to you on the kit.... I followed another bike that had all three functions and my impression was with only 3 led's lit while running it didn't offer a whole lotta visual impact. Since I don't do a lot of night riding I'd rather have all 11 leds burning during the day, and all 11 going to high intensity when I hit the brakes. I'll check around. There a quite a few truck/trailer/RV outlets in the area. For $15 bucks it's a deal. One of the reason's if I have to replace rather than fix, I'd like to get the same style as the mounting hardware. Thanks to all of you for the ideas, info and suggestions. Youse guys have been a big help....
  21. I have two dead led's on the rear light bar that are not working. When I first got the bike they flickered a little, but lately nada.... I don't even know the brand but they are quite common and a pic's attached. My question two fold. Who made them, and can they be repaired?? Or do I have to buy a replacement??
  22. Ya know Don, I don't know how my post got interpreted as a complaint about supporting dues on this board. Remember I'm the guy that sells the fork braces to supporting members only, and occasionally sends you the $12 bucks to upgrade a trial member's status to supporting. When asking about the lack of a donation button, I may have pushed the wrong button, and for that I'm sorry. I just hope that your new site endeavor becomes self supporting by lots of Harley owners and ends up a great success. On the flip side, if it doesn't you can always set up a Harley Tech Forum ala for GoldWing's on VR'org.....
  23. You certainly bit off a chunk for your first LD trip two up Dave... Glad you and the wife had fun. Denver's a great place to ride to and ride from....
  24. Nolan already has it available. Unfortunately it ain't cheap....
  25. In the first 5 years quite a few of us used to 'donate' money to help out with the out of pocket expenses of maintaining VR.org.
