  1. Here's another 'trick' to get the diaphragms to stay in the groove. It's easy on a 1stGen. Not so on a 2nd. What's happening is the spring starts pushing the slide before the cap gets close to the housing and pulls the lip out of the groove. So.... remove the air filter and you can see the slides in the venturies. Take a long screwdriver and gently hold the slide so it doesn't move. Place the cap on the body. Remove the screwdriver. Piece of cake....

  3. I don't know what year they made a hitch change, but you might check to make sure one is available for that year that will work on your bike, as Bushtec doesn't support the older styles. I think they made three design changes??? BTW I see older Bushes going for as low at $1000 on CL locally. 2 is on the high side.
  4. Lean back all you want. You'll only be raising the back of the bike an inch or so. Shouldn't even notice the difference except for the low speed steering improvement...
  5. I would think if you get the training wheels up off the ground to suspend the rear tire you could break the bead on the rear tire enough to replace the stem... Not a big deal if you can get the bead to clear the center line of the rim. Deep clamps should work. Also some protection more for the rim than the tire....
  6. My daughter works as a cashier in a truck stop/station in Sault St Marie, Michigan, and they pump a lot of gas for those north of the boarder. We just talked about it last week. The Canadians get madder than 'H' because the pumps won't take their cards. She said it has something to do with their 'scan' chip that's put in them, and the pumps not reading it. Changing the card sounds like the only answer, as pumps in the US work off the magnetic strip. Or...suck it up and prepay....
  7. I wonder why the MC trailer builders don't make them 5 to begin with. I just added a Voyager kit to my '04 and it's a 5 wire. I agree about splicing into the brake and running with Steve's adapter. I my case it'll be 3 piggybacked. One for the isolater/trailer, one for the Voyager, and one for one of Steve's lightbars. It gonna be interesting...and crowded
  8. The only way the billet air filters covers will fit is with the K&N's. You can put the OEM covers back on and use most aftermarket filters. If you decide to do that I'd be interested in buying those terrible looking billet covers from you..... I also have a set of OEM covers with a little bling on them. I can send pics if you decide to go that direction. That said you can clean the K&N's and they do have a lifetime warrantee...

  10. That's what I did. I didn't have as many problems as you, but the low beam was dim. I by-passed it by running on high beam and adjusting it down. However, I ran across a minty dash assembly off an '83VR on eBay and swapped them out. The lights started working again, plus the replacement had half the mileage on the odo. The only thing I can see that might be a problem for you is the po's jury rigging of the headlight circuit, and trying to figure out what he did?? Another problem you might run into is finding a clean dash off an '83?? Not sure if the '84 and '85 years will plug and play??
  11. Yep, that's my first Venture. Love that bike. It's now sitting about 10 feet from my office door.... along with a few others... I think that pic was taken at VW3 up in Susanville Ca. 'cause that's the last time Hdhtr and I rode together at a Venture West...
  12. Run around in 4th gear for a while, and then when you hit 5th it'll seem like overdrive....
  13. It'll work on the 2ndGen as well. Haven't had a charge problem since Cody. That's not to say it's a cure-all, but so far knock on wood....

  15. Hi Dave, Yeah, Dano had a deal on some a few years ago. He could pro'bly talk more intelligently than I ever could about them.... I can't even spell the name, but the older Indians used them, and that's where he got them. Surplus. They are not a plug and play. Dan had to install the one in the '99 up in Cody for me. What better guy to do it....
  16. Had much the same issues with the same diagnosis 2 years ago. Couldn't walk from the car to the house without having to sit and blow for 15 minutes to catch my breath. They finally told me it was old age... OK so I'm getting old, but not that old. Anyway I had one of those portable poop test things and said what the 'H' and sent it in. Within a week they were scheduling me for a colonoscopy. The test was not good and 2 weeks later I was in the O/R. They found a big tumor. The surgeon estimated it was 8+ yr.'s old. Anyway it was benign, and I got a free appendectomy out of the deal. Today I'm doing fine, and was hoofing around on the top of Mt Hood in Oregon with the best of them at VW14. Hope they finally find out what's ailing you Buddy. Don't take no for an answer.....
  17. Make sure if you pick one up off eBay that it comes from a late model bike. The newer the better. Ask questions.... If the seller sez 'Duh??' move on to another.
  18. The engine should match also. Looks like someone may have stuffed another motor in there. The engine will not have the entire VIN # stamped on it. Just the last 4 or 5 digits... I have a 1300 factory crate engine installed in my '83. The numbers match the OEM, but the letter for the year is a 'G' indicating it's an '86 motor.
  19. You should be turning around 4200 at 75mph +/- if you're running the OEM final. Remember the speedo will be showing faster than you're actually moving, unless you have a speed-healer installed...
  20. Time to swap out the rectifier.... Easy. Take out the 2 bolts, drop it, unplug it, clean the contacts, plug in the new one, bolt it back on.

  24. Here's something to think about. In a previous post you mentioned that the trailer will track on the center line of the bike, but while looking at the design, the drop flange will do so only if both the trailer and the bike are up right. It seems to me that as soon as the bike is leaned to the side, and the drop stays perpendicular, the tow point will shift off center. The more of a drop, to more of a shift. Conversely, the less drop the less shift. Also it looks to me that if the trailer tilts/flips, and the bike stays upright, the only movement would be as if it were a standard non-tilt ball as the resistance because of the drop, would not allow the pivot. Maybe I'm not seeing it right??
