  1. That's what I'm kinda thinkin'..... I may just cut the plug off the old set of carbs and zip tie it to the new lead. Then if someone want's to hook the heater back up they can figure it out...
  2. Thanks for the reply Neil. So I take it your '99 did not have the fuel recovery valve smog stuff like the Ca.USA models, and the carb set I picked up may very well be off a low mile non/ca-'99... or later. The new set does have the same set up, but nothing going off the back to the valve... Looks like it may be time to remove the valve and start capping things off...???
  3. This has to be some sort of record. Asked for an opinion and 24 hours later not one post. Usually this is like tossing a chunk of raw meat to a pack of rabid dogs. 74 views and there should be at least 85 opinions. Maybe Puc was right???
  4. Kevin, I bought the whole set including the connector box from Pinwall, and used just one of the lowers. The one lower I have left is 4XY7E00-6107. The uppers are 1D61200-6107 and 1D61100-6107. Any idea what they came off of? They work fine.... Maybe these aren't discontinued??
  5. Yeah, it will........ on some..

  7. Ok the kid is back in school and I finally have time to wrench on the '99. She's been sitting for way too long with all the parts sitting in the wings ready to go. It's been over two years of her needing a complete fuel delivery transplant due to neglect and health issues. So after pulling the carbs, I found I had to replace them as the OEM's where toast. When I pulled them I had to cut what looked like a vacuum hose going down to the smog valve located on the frame down by the horn. Figured I'd go ahead and cap the valve when the time came. So I get this nice set of carbs from Pinwall, and #1 it isn't plumbed for the hose, and #2 out of the sensor plugs... carb heater and throttle position... the position fits but the heater is another type that's on the '99. From the condition of the carbs I'm assuming they came off a later model 2ndGen. My Question is... sorry it's taken me so long to get here.... Do later model carbs, which are not destined for California come with out fuel recovery plumbing??? And also after checking the oem heater plug I have a choice... cut and splice the oem plug onto the newer heater lead.., or remove the entire heater loom and put it on the new carb set.... or just leave it unplugged as some of the members have done??? Whatcha think??
  8. Geeze Scott, I thought this was leading up to your patch being covered by a subdivision....
  9. There were a couple of members who made their own. I think it would be right up your alley, being electrical and all.... I think that if anyone contacted Ponch he'd be willing to pass on some pointers?? If I remember the biggest problem was finding the right sized gauges....
  10. That would be cool...Huh?? I think it's really two things. The high center of gravity due to the tank position AND the fork mounted fairing... Even though the 1st's sit higher they're still more manageable.. I don't know if'n it'll help but I ordered a pair of Progressives for Seven of Nine. I'll know once I get them installed. Put a set in my first 1stGen and it was awesome....but then again it was a 1gen to begin with.... Don't feel like the Lone Ranger.. When I got the '99 I nicknamed her 'Miss Piggy'. http://www.cast-aways.com/QUICKY/misspiggy.jpg
  11. I could do all that stuff on my 1stGen...not as good as you of course .., but these 2ndGens have me befuddled on low speed handling. The sooner I can get one up above 10 knots the better... And did I ever say how much I hated gravel....
  12. Great video Puc. Now I want to see you do that on a 2-gen....
  13. Yeah, but we gots lots of parts....
  14. Ponch was the one that developed that cluster Dan. Sure do miss him....
  15. California ranked #43... Come on... We lose more MC through accidents per day than SD has in the whole state...
  16. I don't think this is a very good representation of bike ownership ranking per state. The low population states will always rate higher. A better and fairer count would be per square mile within each state. In otherwords dealing with density.... IMHO
  17. I have that same problem riding one up... which is actually like most riding two up... So I don't use the rear brake a whole lot. When I do it's for fast stops, and then I finish off with the front brakes landing on 2 feet. Otherwise I ain't gonna stay upright... With my left knee bent it just won't work. PS: I just thought about it a bit more, and with my weight and the bike's wet weight combined it's a little over 1200 lbs that I need to keep balanced, so my center of balance isn't very forgiving...
  18. Do a carb sync on it. Probably a previous owner used the #4 sync screw to set the idle, and now everything is messed up. Don't ask me how I know of such things....
  19. I'm not sure about the '85, but the '83 and '84 are a different animals. The MKI's have center cooling and are a thicker rotor, while the MKII's have a solid center. I'm not totally sure how this might effect the covers fitting properly, but it might have something to do with it???
  20. I ran across this youtube on another board, and thought it was interesting. I know a lot of you already know about the school, but this was the first I'd heard of it. Maybe a few others might find them interesting as well. There are additional 'Tubes' that can be found by searching U for . Although mostly related to Track Day riding, a lot of these tips can be used in a limited way on Ventures as well. Maybe correcting bad habits??
  21. Yep they are getting rare... Went to an MC Swap meet Sunday morning. Lots of old Hardley parts. Metric was almost nada. While leaving a group of three riders were entering, and lo and behold one of them was a 1stGen.. He probably was just as disappointed as I was when he got inside. It amazing the amount of cr@p these guys collect over the years.... Think I might join them next year....
  22. Try a set of Harley RK Clamps. They have a lot of adjustment to them, and IMHO are a better clamp than the 1stGen OEM's....
  23. I've been a Nolan guy forever, but that one is too 'spacey' for me. I've worked my way up the line starting with an N100 to now using a 103. One of these days when they start getting affordable I'll give a 104 a try, but until then I'll stick with what I have. MOF I'm about ready to round file my black 102 'cause it's getting a little 'old and seedy'.... Bought it brand new and have plumb wore it out.
  24. Make sure your expansion hole isn't plugged up before spending any money....
  25. Just a thought... That close to the Sturgis rally will be a zoo. 2015 is the 75th Anniversary, and the promoters are pushing it hard.... I still think any time in the 3rd or 4th week of June would be best if you don't like crowds... Then if anyone wants, they can stick around for the official Sturgis.... I bet riders are going to start showing up in early July?? IMHO...
