Hey thier, I am in need of a few of the small hard to find stuff.. I need the fuel petcock, or actually just the handle off of one, and I need 1 or 2 exhaust clamps, where the headers meet the collector box. Any chance you have these parts laying around?
-
Hey Don, Thanks for the help on the TCI, my son was able to find the bad diodes and replace them. We ended up cutting a access on the top (bottom?) of the unit and then sealing it back up.
I did have a question on your homemade exhaust cooper gaskets. What size cooper pipe did you use and where did you find it? (all I can find at Home Depot and Lowes is small stuff)

Thanks, I actually never thought about holding open the throttle, but I will check again as soon as I get the bike back together. As I had mentioned in my first post, I have already ran all of the valve and adjusted shims. I even check, double checked and had a pal of mine triple check my numbers to make sure they all added up to be with in a good tolerance as per the book. I have pulled the TCI off and it actually had enough moisture in it to make a small puddle in my palm, so I figure that is not good. I did have a question about pulling the board all of the way out of the box, Is it done by de-soldering they pins (the 8 and 6) (and removing the screw from the middle of it) and then pulling the board? From the look I had under it, (just a small pry from the backside) that side has a few areas that can use some cleaning and inspecting. My son has volunteer to do the work, he is a electronics Tech for the Air Force, and I figure if he can work on the F117 electronics, he should be good to check out a 85 Yama I pretty much have the bike apart, and will begin putting it back together soon, I just hope after all of this fuel draining, carb adjusting, TCI cleaning, and just plan o tinkering, the bike will actually start, run clean, and I can finally go for a RIDE All course, non of this would have been possible with out the help of a bunch of great folks who are quick to share knowledge and offer plenty of advice,,,, as always, THANKS in ADVANCE!!

As always, Thanks for all of the info, this will give me some work to do during my down time, as you said, it might not solve all of my problems, but I am sure it sure in the heck won't hurt to resolve these issues

OK guys, it has been a while, I had to step away from the "Brown Bomber" for a bit, it seems work and health issues got in the way. So, I am now recovering from a minor surgery and have a couple of weeks to do some minor (light) work on the bike and need as always your trusted advise. The bike is having the same symtobs as when I left off. It will run, but only with the choke on, It likes to ideal up by itself, and then after a bit just cuts off. Here is what I have done so far Rebuilt carbs to include new dia's and choke dia's as well, and yes the small "o" ring is in place. New fuel lines, filter, and cleaned tank New Plug wires, boots, and plugs Check and shimmed valves #1,#3,#4 (140+/-) all good PSI, #2 a little weak (90+/-) (these numbers are from memory, but they should be close, main point is #2 is weaker then the other 3) Sync carbs by ear to the best of my ability Removed YCIS and Plugged all ports (except #2 for Vacumn thingy a giggy) - techo term I figured I would pull the TCI open and check it as I have read others had done and bake it. The bike has been in FL for most of it's life and I am sure the humidly has surely gotten into it by now. Is there a thread showing the location, removal and tips for checking/cleaning/repairing/drying this thing out? Any suggestions and tips on any of my symptoms would be greatly appreciated:missingtooth:

OK, So I have removed my YCIS and plugged the ports, but what exactly does the sensor do that is has a vac line coming off of #1 (#2?) jug and runs up under the dash and hooks to the Pressure Sensor / Free Boost Sensor? I can't seem to find anything about it. Just wonder ing, and how does one test it?

Carb Question
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
So this is where I am at on my 1st Gen Project "The Brown Bomber". Pulled off the YCIS and installed plugs on ports, replaced the sync port plugs also. Rechecked valves and installed new cover gaskets. Purchased new Vac lines for the remaining. Had no luck what so ever in getting out the froozen Mixing Valves So instead of chancing destroying the Carb Bodies, I have purchased a gently used set of carbs off of Ebay and plan on using the best two to complete my set. Once that is done, I will put them pack on, cross my fingers and hope I have the miss and pooping out of it. Oh, I am also replacing the front two exhaust gaskets (?), since I removed them to rebuilt my collector. I am also checking all of my exhaust connections to ensure I have no leaks.... So what have i missed... I will update again as soon as I get things back togeather. Damm am I miss some great riding weather here in FL! -
Carb Question
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks a lot 86er', That will work, so it looks to me like it is the spring, washer , O-Ring. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the other two out and replaced... Thanks again -
Carb Question
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the link, but that is not exactly what I was looking for. I am looking at the Pilot Screw or Mixture Adjustment Screw. The one behind the brass plugs, that are usually set at 2 1/2 turns. Anyway, I got two out and could not remember the order of the parts, spring then ?? and then ?? (washer / o-ring) also, who ever had drilled out the plugs had screwed up head of two of the screws. So they are not coming out, what do I do now. options please:think: besides TNT and a long fuse -
OK, here is one for ya. I took the mixture jet out of the carb and all be damm if I can't remember witch way they go back in. Is it spring, washer, o-ring, or spring o-ring, washer. Any help would be greatly helpful...

Hey Guys, I just purchased new Diaphragms from Flatout MotorCycles in IN. I got the info from this group and they have been great to work with. Chris is Parts is very helpful and even returns phone calls. Anyway, I got them for $55 each, which is a awesome price (my local thief (dealer) wanted $97 each. I have included his link. I can't say enough about their service, he even shipped it on Thursday and I got it on Friday AM (in Florida), and it only cost me an extra $5 bucks!! http://www.flatoutmotorcycles.com/fiche_select.asp, I purchased part # 41R-14940-09-00. Good luck and I hope this helps

86 venture backfiring
kycaveman replied to kevin-vic-b.c.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What exactly is the "YICS system", I have one and yes it has the 4 hoses, properly the original ones, so can I plug it off? I am now beginning to start the process of elimination game, checking exhaust gaskets, rubber plugs on the sync ports, vacuum lines, ect and Kevin please forgive me, I am not trying to hijack your thread, but it looks like we are both fighting the same demons. I promise to report any success and failures I am having so maybe we can come to a group fix -
86 venture backfiring
kycaveman replied to kevin-vic-b.c.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Kevin, I truly feel your pain, I have a 85 VR, so far I have rebuilt the carbs, (New Diaphgrams, o rings, dipped and cleaned) shimmed the valves, new plug wires and plugs. The bike is running strong, but the backfiring is driving me nuts, and I have had no luck at all in getting the carbs to sync. But all they are saying makes a lot of since. I am sure I have some holes in my collectors, I have not checked all of my vacuum lines or the plugs that cover the sync ports, and two of my pilot jets are locked tighter then hell and so far not coming loose. If I have learned anything so far about the 1st Gen VR, is it is a labor of love, and this group is the best when it comes to giving great advice... Good luck, and I will continue to read replies to your question in hopes of finding my gremlin. When if I do find my problem, I promise to pass it on to all.... -
Well my winter project is the same as my fall. I am still working on my first 1st Gen. But my hopes are high and I am stay positive So for I have rebuilt all the brake parts. Pulled the Carbs and Cleaned. Shimmed the Valves, replaced the fork seals. Now I am pulling the Carbs again, this time to actualy rebuild them, new Diagrahms, New Decellorators, new Gaskets, new O-Rings and replace some of the Jets. I am also rebuilding the forks again, since, now they are leaking once agian. Well that pretty much sums it up...
-
Hey All, I hope the Holidays went great for all of you. I have pretty much spent almost all of my free time working on my project bike and so far thanks fo all of the great info form you all been able to replace front fork seals, rebuild master cylinders, brake calipers, and completely tear down and clean my carbs. I even build a handy home made sync tool and had began syncing the carbs, but that is where I have ran into another problem. They will not sync, 1 & 2 where OK, but 3 & 4 just will not make it. I ran a compression test and the are reading low (89 & 91). The bike is a 85 with 70,000 miles. So i figure it is time to shim them. So here is the question, I can buy a shim tool and shims and shims, or I can request to borrow the the "traveling shim kit" and add to it and send it back when I am done if it is still around? Guess that was a long winded way of asking can I please, please, please get use of it if it is still up to use. ... Thanks all

Now it is the Carb!
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well the bike gremlins must be working on my 85 "Brown Bomber" went out today, started it and it ran pretty damm good, I have not had the chance to do much to it with the holiday but I have put togeather a pretyy good game plan. I wanted to thank everyone for all of there input, I am going to replace the Dia's, the large ones and the small ones, I am pulling out the mixture jets, doing a compressiong test and depending on the results, I will check the valves. I really do believe the bike is on the right track and will soon be very road worthly... Again thanks to everyone p.s. for those who have asked about the little "o" rings under the Dia' cover, they are all thier and in in good shape. -
Now it is the Carb!
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Condor, that is exactly what mine is doing!!! Runs up with the choke on, can ease up the REV's with patience, but no sudden moves. I have replaced the fuel lines and the filter, everything coming out looks good, I even drained some and let it set to see what settled. After reading through the other post in this site, I am going to check compression and see how that goes, but I am also going to check valve clearance, It is just a trail and error from now on/. -
Now it is the Carb!
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the info and tips, I will be trying the liquid tape trick (I actually have a can at the house), since it will be a little bit before I get the extra cash to purchase the new dia's, But I will be ordering them for sure... The outfit I found the price of $57 is http://metricpartsdirect.com/Default.asp I have ordered from them acouple of times, and so far they have beat everyone else I have found. My local dealer wanted $93 each. Talking about a mark up!!!. Also, just to be clear; the Idle Mix Screws you are reviering to are the factory preset screws, you have to drill out correct? My have been drilled, but I did not touch them out of fear the great cycle gods would come crashing down on me . So if all i read is correct, I need to go ahead and suck it up, gently loosen them up and back them out and then clean and reinstall by gently screwing them until they bottom out and back out 2 1/8 turns. Does that pretty much sum it up... -
Ok, Here we are again, had the carbs off and cleaned them up good, but did notice the diaphagms are pretty much shot, so I am looking around the net and come up with a price of $57.00 each, does this sound right?? Holy **** that is about $240.00 plus shipping. Guess I know where my Christmas money is going So this is what is going on, the bike starts right up, idles fine, but when you go to rev it up, it falls flat on its face and sputtures, does this sound about right for a diaghagms issue Ok, guys let me have it, I need all the help I can get....... Thanks in advance

Need Brake Help Desperately
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks agian, I knew I would get a bunch of good information from you guys. After looking it over, I think it was a combo of overfilling the rear reservoir and having the pedal adjustment too high/tight. As far as flushing the system, new pads, free moving calibers, ect. I completely rebuilts all systems and everything was moving freely and clean. That is why I was having such a hard time figuring out the cause. But thanks to your great info and suggestions, I believe it is now good to go..... . As soon as I get off work, I will take it around the pond a few times and see how it works out. -
Need Brake Help Desperately
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks all, I just checked the travel and it was really tight, so I am HOPING that was it, just not enough release and holding pressure. I did completely clean all pieces including the P-valve and flushed new fluid through everything. What should the free play/travel be on the pedal? I did comment to my friend I thought it was really tight and high up when I first tested the bike.. and of course I am the one who moved the adjustment forward for my long legs, and did not even think about the linkage. I have to work in the morning, but will take it for a run after lunch. Now on to other issues, the bike had been sitting for 2 years and at first would not run, but now it is idling and not missing to bad on acceleration. I have flushed the gas, changed the fuel filter, air filter, plugs, oil, and seafoamed the tank. I am hoping to run it for a while and wash out the effects of sitting. I will update as the project goes on, and of course on how my test run goes tomorrw. -
Ok, this is where I am. I have rebuilt all 3 brake calipers and the rear master cylinder. After plenty of bleeding, both the bike and me, I finally got the blasted thing to hold pressure. Went for a quick test run and everything was going fine and then the darn brakes locked and would not let go. I pulled out the ol` wrench and bleed of the rear and wamo`, I was off again. Did a few laps around the pond and then they where dragging again. This time I bleed of the left front, and then I was off again. OK, I check the rear master cylinder, made sure the little hole was clear, and tried it again. After several goes, sure enough they started dragging again….. So what do I do now? You guys have been a wealth of info and anymore would be great!!!!! Oh Yea, if it helps I have a 1985 VR. and the right brake (front) is working just fine.

New Exhaust for the 1Gen
kycaveman replied to kycaveman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for all of the info guys, I have located a set of RK's from a friend of mine, brand new off of a 03, for $50 bucks. Next I just have to find the time to build one of Rusty's collectors and I am off and running, I can't wait to get back on the road again, I am missing prime riding season here in FL. (sorry to all of my new friends up north, but hey, it does give you time to get the projects done without missing riding time) As soon as I get the Brown Bomber on the road I will do some follow up pics.
