2nd Gen Valve Adjustment
Ponch replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
When mine was due (14,000 miles ago), I priced the job at three dealers. I also got a wide range (from $200.00 to $400.00). After having done this, I think the job is well worth $400.00, especially at dealer ship per hour rates. I was too cheap to pay it . Having said this, there is no way I would let my dealer do this as long as I could still twist wrenches. To me this was a lot of fun. The companionship I enjoyed with brother VR.org members and getting to know some I didn't know that well was an added plus. Get a shim kit, the valve tool, some reference materials and go to it. Better yet, have a valve maintenance party with some folks who have done it before. Just don't tear too many bikes down at one time. -
...about 3:45, headed to Yammi dealer on 1960. Can swing by your work and drop the pump off.

Baron risers I put a Diamond R backrest on and helped my back as well.

You gotta hold on tight with that much power. I used to have numbness in both hands and a constant pain in the lower back til I put the Baron handlebar risers on. All gone now. Ponch

I got one fer ya. Gimme a call.

I just got an email fom preferredpowersports.com. The deal is off. There was a problem with pricing. The correct price is $60.00 for the kit and $18.00 for the shim pks. Even this is below their normal selling price. I ordered the kit and shims anyway. Ponch

If they (dealer techs) are going by the manual, you do have to take it all apart. Shouldn't take more than an hour tops. I removed the passenger floorboards, frame covers and battery tray. Easy access from there. Some can do it w/o pulling the boards. They must get get paid according to manual prescribed procedures (and time). Ponch

Anyone in the Houston area considering the purchase, I suggest bying addon shim packs only (or not, the price is too good not to have your own). I'll share my kit and we can add shims to build an inventory. I bought the starter kit plus addons in 2.60, 2.65, 2.70 nad 2.75 thicknesses. I will purchase a tool as well. Ponch

I like the CCW vest. [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Cowhide-Concealment-Bolstering-Pockets/dp/B0028QKRRA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1247684376&sr=8-3]Amazon.com: Leather Gun Vest Made of Fine Cowhide Leather, This Concealment Vest Offers Supreme Comfort While Bolstering Your Firearm in Two Inside Pockets.: Sports & Outdoors[/ame] It's well made and its hard to detect the weapon. The only draw back is it's too hot to wear in 100° weather. Ponch

On the proper tool (35-3462), there's a hex on the center of the cam that the tool fits on. When you rotate the crank/cam, the tool rotates with the cam. -

It looks like three bikes in line right now, I can help. Ponch -
I'm sure you can research everything from the net, but if you want, I'll send you some newspapers. In the meantime, we'll be watching for something for you. Oil is still king here and there are huge companies that need welder/fitters and mechanical technicians.

I've found the same condition with M/C rear tires when the tread flattens.

Yeah, I left mine off cause they dissolved. I haven't looked into replacing them yet. Probably could place an O ring in there if needed. Goose, the only add-ons I would entertain is the need for a long ratchet or breaker bar while turning the crank over. With a short ratchet, its real hard to find the mark without over shooting it. The other is , I remember squiggly lines on both sides of the valve cover, both on the exhaust side, one on each cylinder next to the center. Might want verify my response. I'm old, I forget easy. Don't turn the cover around. It has to match the same orientation as the cylinder head. Article looks great to me. Ponch -

If you can find it small tubes, I think that would be best. Most chem's start to degrade after exposed to ambient air. The company I work for makes products from polyurethane. We have to open the drums of resin in order to add an anti-foaming agent before we can heat it up for use. We open the drum just long enough to add the anti-foam, then add a nitrogen charge to purge ambient air from the drum. This is to keep the resin from reacting before its supposed to. It's kinda the same with PVC/ABS cement. As soon as you open it, it starts to react a little and therefore loses its strength. If it is thick and not very fluid, it won't have all the chemical available to react when its needed. Ever re-open a can of PVC cement a month or so after you've glued up a water pipe connection? You usually have to get some large pliers to open the can and then, if you're lucky, you have some usuable glue. Most times, its not fit for use. So buy in small quantities if possible. :2cents:

I used to wear a doo rag/welder's cap under my helmet, but quit because of sweating and the helmet slipping around on my gourd too much. I bought a new Arai helmet last year that fits much better than the old one. Since then, I have not worn anything on my head under the helmet. Funny thing is my head doesn't sweat now and there's no irky sweat smell in the liner. I've never washed the liner, but I do check it after long rides (maybe I ought to wash it!). Ponch

Thanks, Cindy. I agree it would be too much trouble. Maybe Rick will be Butlering some seats and he can staple them on for us.

oil from L vent tube, onto ABS plastic cowling?
Ponch replied to bamico's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I followed Goose's research on carb float levels. He found that on all of the bikes he looked at to date, the levels were too high. Since my mileage was suffering, I wanted mine checked as well. Four of us (all G2's) rode some thirteen hundred miles to Freebird's maint day. I consistantly got the worse gas mileage. Goose consistantly got the best. Goose and I (bikes) were loaded about the same and we did the same miles and speed. He did his carbs months previously to the trip. When we tore into mine, we found the levels about 3/16" too high. he did three bikes at the maint day and all were off the same. After resetting and changing spark plugs, I got better mileage than Goose on the way home. About fifteen miles per tank. -
Had a unit from Signal Dynamics with 50 or so smal LED's. It burnt out at about a year. They wouldn't even return my email. I had another problem with Signal Dynamics on a part I purchased from Cistom Dynamics. The rep at Custom Dynamics handled the afair and I got the replacement right away. I replaced the defective tail light board with a unit from Custom Dynamics that has less LED's. These LED's are bigger and brighter. The original unit burned (I should say SHORTED OUT) because the resistors and other wiring was too close to the mounting locations.
