I have a smart phone and use it for a speedometer, navigation and music on the bike (but refuse to use it as an actual phone while on the bike ) Anyway I have never been able to find a mount that I really liked, nor could I find one that would position it where I wanted it, so I had to make my own. I went to Radio Shack and started looking around and found a car mount system for $20 that I could cannibalize (don't tell BoomerCPO's pygmies though). I then used some mending brace and rubber lined P clamps and attached it to my mirror stem on the left side. The hardest part was finding a way to have at least a three point mounting for stability. As You can see in the pics there are three p clamps holding it in position. Additionally you will see that the piece that it all attaches to is actually setting on the top of the reservoir cover. All and all it makes it a very stable mounting. As for the swivel ball on the holder I had to used a grinder and flattened it out a little bit to accommodate the bolt head under it. This winter I will be cleaning it up by using shorter bolts. I will also be replacing the mending brace with metal strapping and will add rubber to the bottom where it sits on the reservoir. If I can find a local place to do it I might even get it chromed. One side note is that the holder squeezes the phone very well and I have never had it move or try to bounce out . . . well wait there was this one time I forgot to squeeze it shut and took of down the road. Lucky for me I looked over at it just as it was getting ready to leave my presence at 60 MPH and I was able to catch it in midair. I now have a small green rubber band around the top. It's isn't really there to hold the phone it's just a visual reminder to me to lock the phone in. No green no go. Here are some pics

Been meaning to post this for a while now. Went to Wally World and got a Zefal aluminum bicycle bottle cage for $7 Went to Lowe's and picked up 1 Mending Brace for $2, 2 rubber lined P clamps for $2 and some nuts and bolts for $2 I cut the Mending Brace to sizes I needed than rounded off the squares corners on a grinder. I Attached it to my Mirror Stem on the right side just above the Brake Fluid Reservoir. Since the holder is metal I can spread it wider or squeeze it smaller to fit any size cup or can I might be using. If the resizing ever causes it to break all I have to do is replace the bottle cage for $7 and swap it out. For the passenger I simply used a a conduit clamp and a piece of Mending Brace. I riveted the cup holder and the mending brace together then used the conduit clamp around the passenger hand railing and attached that to the mending brace. Here are the pics of the material and the actual mounting for the front sorry forgot pic for the passenger cup holder

Smart Phone instead of GPS???
AKRefugee replied to maineventurerider's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
I strictly use my iPhone for Navigation/speedometer/music. When I am going to use it for Nav I always review the route before I leave. I also carry an atlas in the trunk just in case or to plan a route if I just want to wander in a specific direction. If all else fails and I get lost, well so what, I will get to see something new I guess.- 19 replies

Did that ride a few years ago in early June. Was running hard to beat snow over Monarch Pass. It was raining at our elevation and snow line seemed to be about 800 ft higher. Lots of fun. Big wide road with truck lanes on the uphills and beautiful scenery. As others said you should do the 550 ride down to Durango. Much tougher ride thought with 2 lane road very few if any truck lanes and some severe switchbacks but wow the scenery is phenomenal.

I lived in Anchorage Alaska during the 1964 quake. It was a 9.2 that lasted 4 minutes. You would get knocked down and then when you stood up get knocked right back down. My brother and I were kids so at first we thought it was funny but believe me we did not think that for very long. We had VERY strong aftershocks for a LONG time after that. After that I became a "bit sensitive" to earthquakes. Now even the the smallest one gets my full attention. Regardless of the size, if I feel it I am headed out of what ever building I am in NOW and firmly instructing everyone else to do the same. (okay I am actually yelling for everyone to get outside). If I am sleeping and it wakes me up I literally fly out of the bed and head outside. My wife thinks it is funny that the amount of time it takes me to get out of bed and be standing outside is measured in nanoseconds but I am not taking any chances of having a building coming down on me if I can get the hell out of it.

This has the warning signs of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DTV) also know as coach flyer leg etc. This can become a serious condition if you don't handle it properly. One of the things you can do is to often move your legs and often (every hour) get off your bike, take a break and do some quick and easy exercises. I have a tendency for DVT and I have learned how to manage it so it does not become a problem. The most important thing you can do is . . . 1 - GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR NOW!!!!! 2 - TELL HIM/HER EVERYTHING!!! 3 - DO EVERYTHING THEY TELL YOU TO DO!!!

Whoa Whoa Whoa there. You first need to take a nap. I mean after all you accomplished (three things in a row) you need to recharge before you attempt anything else. Wouldn't want to see you get stressed now do we?

Fuel pump died yesterday so did a change out today. I went with the Mr. Gasket 42S model and the NAPA 3011 fuel filter. Was a very easy job and cost less than $60 total. WAY better than the $213 price I found on line. Only caveat I can give is to make sure you get the 90 degree, 45 Degree and the nipple and do not use the filter that comes with the pump. There is absolutely no way it will fit in there otherwise. Set it up like this picture I cut the line from the original pump and just connected it to the new wires just to keep it cleaned up. I also cut down the line from the filter to take the bend out and. I did not fasten down the new pump as it all tucked in fine just under the original mounting bracket.
