  1. This was after meeting some friends and filling up on BBQ ribs. We weren't sure we could climb on.
  2. I used aluminum angle from Lowes to make 2 angles (12 inches long). I used a 1/2 inch spacer up front and a 3/8 spacer at the back (so I could use the existing stud). I removed the 2 rear angles for now ( I am working on replacements to reattach to the existing rack). I am posting pictures of the angles installed. I also purchased stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers from Lowes (1/4 inch diameter X 1 inch long).
  3. If I let it sit and cool some, it starts right up. Cranking speed is good, so I suspect the battery voltage is good. When I'm not riding it for several days, I keep an automatic trickle charger on it. I have an alarm that draws some current even when not armed and if I let it sit for 2 weeks, it won't start. It was doing that with the lead acid battery too. I thought the battery was bad and put the odessey in.
  4. The battery is a little over a year old Odessey. I sync'd the carbs last summer (1 was way out). I installed a high output stator winter of 09. I'll have to check idle rpm. May be a little low. I know at idle with brakes on, the voltage drops to between the center mark and the yellow line. May be the high output stator doesn't do enough at idle rpm to keep up. I only run my 1 driving light at night when I am in dark areas. As long as I'm moving the voltage stays above the center mark on the guage. I need to get my digital voltmeter and plug in to see what my voltage is really doing. Thanks for all the suggestions.
  5. Always. I've seen what happens to the head and brain in an accident. Not pretty.
  6. My VR will be running fine. I pull up to a light or stop in traffic. Sometimes it just dies like you turned the ignition off. It doesn't sputter before it does this, it just quits. It will usually start right back up, but the starter turns it slowly. Sometimes I have to push it out of traffic and wait a minute or two before it will crank fast enough to start. I have to put it in neutral, just pulling the clutch lever won't let it crank. It doesn't do it until it has warmed up and I have driven a ways (it usually does it when driven at least 10 or 15 miles in warm weather). It has a one year old gel cell battery and a 4 brush starter with large battery wire. Sometimes if I catch it quick enough as I'm starting to open the throttle, it will pick back up and run ok, until the next time.
  7. I bought a grade 8 bolt and had the machine shop at my work turn it down and thread it to match the factory shoulder bolt. The original is a milder grade (4 or 5) of steel that fatigues where the threads end and shoulder begins.
  8. When mine did this, I took the old oring to Autozone and they just gave me a new one. No more leaks.
  9. Let us know when and where in Arkansas. I'll try to help where I can.
  10. I found out that I don't have any reserve fuel when the engine quits in the on position. Luckily I had just turned onto the street in front of my house. I took the valve apart and the seal looked good. When I put a quart of fuel in the tank and held my finger over either hole coming from the tank, it would drain all the fuel out the other hole. Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need to buy a new valve assy?
  11. Just sent you $25.00 using paypal. Thanks for the deal.
  12. Does anyone have a picture of how they mounted the Zumo 550 on their First Generation?
  13. Arkansas is centrally located and has a lot of scenic highways and biways to tour. There are a lot of motorcyclists here.
  14. I'm using the Rotella-T diesel synthetic. The engine idles and runs much quieter. The oil stays clean longer (looks almost new at oil changes). I have 2 Dodge Cummins trucks and use the same oil and the place that does my oil analysis for them has me going 11,500 miles between changes and the oil analysis shows it's working real well after this many miles.
  15. I believe I found and fixed the problem. It was in the kill switch on the handlebar. I took it apart and sprayed a little wd-40 in it. Operated it a few times, and have had no more trouble. Thanks for all the other suggestions.
  16. When stopped or just taking off my engine just stops like you turned the key off. It starts back up as soon as you hit the starter. I have had a hiccup before where it is momentary, but yesterday it would completely die, once while pulling out from a side street, which could have been serious if there had been traffic. I've checked connectors and switches for corrosion or just being loose. The relays in the system have voltage as they are supposed too. The radio nor none of the other accessories seem to lose power when this happens. I'm at a loss.
  17. Put me in for 1 of the super braces.
  18. Here's one I use to keep track of all maintenance and mileage items. I use it for all my vehicles.
  19. Can the diaphragms be replaced with the carbs still on the bike?
  20. Can the diaphargms be replaced with the carbs still on the bike?
  21. To replace the rear 1156 bulbs with brighter ones, try the 3497 bulbs. They have 45 cp where the 1156 are 32 cp. The glass is a different shape (smaller in diameter). According to GE they are both 27 watt and pull 2.10 amp. The Wal-Mart in my area carries these bulbs and they are used in several foreign cars.
  22. TupperJ has started making the cables. I bought a set with red positive cable. Looks nice on the bike. Even with cold weather, I can tell a difference on how must faster the bike starts. Ground cable routed in just like original. Positive I had to route up through the frame (after going behind faring) differently as the original routes in a tight area where the bigger cables just couldn't be turned or pushed through without fear of damaging the insulation. However, it worked out to be a straighter shot to the relay after coming over the frame. It was about 4 inches further forward where I came up between the faring mount and bike frame. These are well worth the money.
  23. I just bought one for my 90 Venture from http://www.prosourcemotorsports.com/fiche_select.asp?vcc=Motorcycles&mfg=Yamaha&year=1990. $14 + shipping.
  24. Does anyone know where I can buy wings for my 1990 Venture Royal? It seems no one has a listing for these bikes any longer.
