Sleeperhawk's New Instrument Panel Installation
Pecker replied to Sleeperhawks Mechanic's topic in Watering Hole
Glad to hear it all worked out for ya George. When you called yesterday evening saying it was leaking water, I sure got worried. I guess the plumbers dope did the trick? Anyhow, now that you know what your doing, Who's next? I would be more than happy to supervise the next willing victim... I mean candidate. Dave- 45 replies

So does everyone hate..............
Pecker replied to Blue Giant's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you are thinking that all Bridgestones are as bad as the Exedra models, please reconsider. I am running a Bridgestones Spitfire on the rear and absolutely love it. It is a dual compound sport touring tire that lasts twice as long as the Exedra. It probably does not have the load rating of the Avons, but I don't carry alot of extra gear with me. Before any body has to ask the question, Bridgestone does not carry the stock RSV/RSTD rear size. I am running a 170-80 rear tire. I needed to do a little material removal on the fender support, maybe 1/4" at the most. This is my second Spitfire, the first one lasted about 9,000 miles. I will never argue with anyone about how bad the Exedras suck, but the Spitfires, in my book, are fantastic. Just checked the Bridgestone website, the Spitfire S-11 size 170-80-15 is load rated at 77H, same as the Elite 3. -
Sleeperhawk's New Instrument Panel Installation
Pecker replied to Sleeperhawks Mechanic's topic in Watering Hole
I gotta tell ya'll, the gauge set up looks ten times better in person. George replicated the marble look from the dash almost perfectly! I had a few laughs helping him, I don't think I ever saw George so nervous as when he was cutting out that dash panel! I can't wait to see Riderduke start cutting on his bike, there is something about hacking chunks out of perfectly good plastic that makes people cringe. Hopefully, we can get the proper fitting and finish the job this week. Dave- 45 replies

Trade it in for a new Chevy. Seriously, I think Eck has the best solution, put a simple on/off toggle switch between the control box and the noise maker. You can leave the noise maker off all the time, and only turn it on when you are actually in a tight spot trying to back up. At least that's what I would do.

Hey Beau, What you gonna do with RK's you had on that fine lookin' scoot? I'd be highly interested if the price is right. Send me a PM if you want to unload them. I've got drag pipes on my RSTD and want to be a tad more discreet with the noise level. The warden can hear me every time I try to escape for a ride. I tried a set of '09 RK's, but they have different guts between the left and right, caused a big mess trying to get the bike to run good. I ended up putting the noise makers back on. Dave

Passing Light hollow bolt
Pecker replied to iquester's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Iquester, Man, I looked all over the garage, tore through both toolboxes, checked my pockets, I searched evry where and cannot find those*&%$#ing bolts. I'm sorry I got you all amped up and not have the dang things. My bet is, I'll run across them in a couple of months looking for something else. Hopefully you can still get them at the dealership. My apologies. Dave -
Ponch, Just to let you know, the tank panels on the '05 and up Tour Deluxe are not the same as the older Royal Stars from the '90's. The older Royal Stars have the speedo on the tank very similar to what the current Road Stars have.

Passing Light hollow bolt
Pecker replied to iquester's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Just wanted to let you know I didn't forget about your bolt. I got a little busy last night, one of those minor emergency things at the house (gotta keep the warden happy!) I have written my self a note to dig through the toolbox and look for that bolt this afternoon. Dave -
I don't have a tank panel to offer, but I am very interested in your idea. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Passing Light hollow bolt
Pecker replied to iquester's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I think I might have what you need. I'll check when I get home this evening. If I have it, I'll take a picture and see if it's what you are looking for. -
Yes the stockers from any model '05 and up will fit any other year '05 and up, no change in these bikes except for colors and chrome fork legs. As far as the sound, the stockers are VERY quiet, you hardly hear the engine at speed unless you have the whine/chirp,scream or what ever some folks complain about. I'm not going to get involved in your pricing agreement except to say, if you were to but them brand new from Yamaha, you would probably passout from sticker shock:mo money:. Those pipes are rediculously priced. By the way, welcome to the sight. Glad to have you aboard.

Snow? What is this SNOW that you speak of? Is this a Canadian word? Oh, I remember, thats what comes on the TV screen when the station goes off the air! That's the only snow we ever get here in beautiful South Carolina! It seems way to early to hear about this stuff. Must be that Global Warming I keep hearing about.

2nd gen wont start........
Pecker replied to nkbjones's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I would drain the carb bowls, then pull the fuel line off the petcock and stick it in a cup of straight Sea Foam and turn the key switch on, let it suck the Sea Foam into the carbs. See if you can get it to fire off with the Sea Foam. Let it sit over night. Might clean things up, sounds like your carbs are just gummed up. I am sure others will chime in too. -
You have a couple of options to get the stockers off. Option one, simply just take the weights off and slice the left grip length wise then peel it off the bar. The throttle is a little trickier. For that you need to put all of the slack in the throttle cables then take apart the switch housing and pop the cables off the sleeve, the sleeve will slip right off. Option two, if you want save the stocker on the left, use compressed air and a slender air nozzle to force air between the grip and the bar, use a screw driver to help get the nozzle in there. Then work the nozzle around to fully break the glue loose, when the glue is released, keep blowing air under the grip while you slide it off the bar. Make sure you clean all of the old glue off the bar before putting the new grips on.

Notice for Purolator Pure One filter users...
Pecker replied to gibvel's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Purolaters concern is understandable. Basically what they are wanting to let you know, if you use there auto filter on a bike, and the filter causes an engine problem, their warranty is voided. This PureOne filter has a much tighter media, it filters smaller particles out of the oil. A tighter media means a bigger pressure drop, higher pressure going in than coming out. This pressure drop will get higher as the flow rate increases, so, at idle the oil flow is lower, as RPMs increase, the oil flow increases, As the flow increases so does the pressure drop. Make sense? Now, how does that effect our bikes? That all depends on how much pressure drop is acceptable. Obviosly some of our members have been using this PureOne filter for a while with no immediate adverse effects, but there may be a long term issue. If the top end is getting less oil than needed, especially at higher RPMs, you could run the risk of reducing your engine life. That is probably NOT the case. I would think after 30,000 miles of using the PureOne filter, if engine wear was a concern, it would show up by now. I am not wanting to toot my own horn, but, I am a mech. engineer in the filtration business, I have had pretty good experience in this stuff. And yes, I use the PureOne filter as well.- 14 replies

I can probably help, just not sure what bolt you are talking about. A few pics would most likely clear things up. Also, the kit you bought, was it specifically for your bike model, the voyager kits are not one size fits all. A little more info and a few pics and I'm sure we can get you on track. BTW, I have installed a couple dozen of these voyager kits.

I don't know about the rest of my RSTD brothers out there, but the reasons I went with the Tour Deluxe as opposed to the Venture was the lack of a fairing. I WANT to feel the breeze when I ride, not hide behind a huge chunk of plastic, having a windsheild I can pop off in a couple of seconds was exactly what I wanted. Add in the electronic cruise control and the quick release sissy bar, the RSTD is/was the perfect bike for my wants. This new Strat Deluxe is certainly not for me, it's a good looking bike and should be a big seller, but you won't find one in my garage. I seriously doubt Yamaha will bring the RSTD back, I could be wrong. Please don't take this as a bash on the Venture, if you guys enjoy your Ventures, thats great. I like the Venture, I just like my Tour Deluxe better.

Who makes a trunk for my '06 RSTD?
Pecker replied to BCowand's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The Venture trunk is a good idea, just rediculously expensive to the tune of over a grand to buy it new. If you find one on EBay, you better jump on it quick, they get snatched up in the blink of an eye. Best bet for a good looking trunk would be the Harley version, you can usually find a couple on EBay for a fair price. Even cheaper if you find one damaged and can do the fiberglass work & paint yourself. Most of the aftermarket brand trunks are pretty cheesy looking, thin fiberglass, kinda small, and don't have any lighting. They usually aren't strong enough to function as a passenger backrest. There are a couple that are decent quality, but are a bit pricey. For cigarette lighter options, look at my pics in my profile. I added one up front on the steering neck cover. Was the best place for me to hook up my GPS. Send me a pm if you want details. -
The Strat has been out for a few years, the Deluxe with the "Batwing" fairing and hard painted saddle bags is brand new. Did not see if cruise control was available, that is one of the big reasons I bought my RSTD. This Deluxe Strat looks like Yamaha is trying to mimic the Harley Street Glide. Just my opinion.
-
Did anybody check out the Stratoliner S? Guess that's why the RSTD was dropped. That may be the direction they will take the Venture, it would be VERY EASY to add a trunk, CB and intercom to that bike and still keep it around 20 grand. Not saying that will happen, or that I want it to happen. BTW, doesn't that fairing look a lot like the HD batwing? Or is it just me? Kind of tells me where Mama Yama was aiming. Sorry, I meant the Deluxe not the S model.

She does take after her Mamma! Yea, I'm sucking up a little bit!

You just have to see this Honda boutique.. er shop! It is as nice as any newer Harley store (can't call em shops anymore, they are selling more clothing items than bikes these days). Carolina Honda is one them there Honda Superstores, nothing but Hondas and they have to have at least one of every model of bike, ATV and PWC that Honda produces. They cram bikes, boats, and 4 wheelers into every nook and cranny in that store, its just rediculous. They have one of the Honda DN-01 automatic motor/scooter things there, I think it stickers at 16 grand or so. Sorry for ranting, I just like a bike shop that is just that, a shop, no fancy lights or spinning risers. Guess how they can afford all that fancy stuff? It ain't by selling bikes cheaper than the other guys.
