Yes, that is what I was trying to warn others about. Even when this questionable (and not posted as a May release) 12.0.6 was available for download, the Canadian Yamaha Site STILL had the "Due to technical problems, with 12.0.6, we have temporarily disabled user download updates". This message was never taken down during this whole time. I think this is still the 12.0.6 that was borking some Logic Heads and locking up the whole system. For those that this occurred to...Yamaha had to install a completely new Logic Head....and that's whey they pulled that v12.0.6 down quickly. I personally think this is the same FEB v12.0.6 that will bork your bike, under certain user entry commands. Be careful, folks... It would only make sense that Yamaha would CLEARLY differentiate the trouble causing FEB release, to any re-written and/or modified RE release with the updated Month stamp BEFORE it gets put out into the wild....

Well..this is where the how's and where'for's of Mama Yama, is weird to say the least. Here I was told (yeah..I was told a LOT OF THINGS over those 7 months..."cough, cough, B.S.! cough, cough...) that my bike was on a slow boat from Japan...and was the last of 4 coming off the line. Well then...there were ONLY 45 SVTC's made...for my V.I.N ends with 042! So....the Yama Mama B.S. is so thick about why they had to pull back for three months...WHO they sent out SVTC's to in the pre-delivery program...and how did they come off the line, and then get assigned to that pool. Obviously, my SVTC was the 42nd SVTC off the production line. I think there was a LOT of shenaniggans going on in the background that we all will never find out the real, or whole story about the SVTC reveal, and delayed launch. You guys are all reporting taking delivery of bikes in the 600's...and here I have one off of the line, just after the line started moving....

I think that is what is happening. I'm not use to such long and tall gears, and the engine only spinning pretty much 1,000 rpm above idle. Coming always off of a long shift 5 speed of the Kawa ZR7S, I think I need to 're-learn' my faster upshifts, but also, ....and this is where the problem is...faster downshifts, while that honking 1854 CC motor is spinning 'higher'...and I use that phrase (LOL) very generously, (LOL)! So..I have had to slightly blip the throttle and apply some engine torque to conjole the gear to downshift. It is only downshifting, never up shifts. Thanks for all your suggestions and feed back, gents. All of it , as always, is most welcome. I must say, this bike is so growing on me...that I don't think I would ever want to have again, a touring bike engine that has a red line of 7,000 to 10,500 (to make torque) that my Kawa has...yep, it's a 10,500 rpm red line screamer. A guy (or gal, lol) can get use to seeing going down the road at 1,400/1,500 rpm's...and the engine merely purring along. This is FUN! At 65 MPH, I am at 2,000 RPM..and that's wonderfully CRAZY! So...I need to always be mindful to get my head out of the touring clouds, and start tapping the gear shift much before the already low RPM's of the SVTC start to decay after a throttle close. I think THAT is my problem..I want to shift down two or three gears in succession, and I don't have a fast enough spinning gear cage to make that happen. It's going to take some re-learning, and that is quite alright with this guy...that's what it is all about, after all. Never had a slow revving big V-Twin. Now, ...I do! BTW, when you use the Sure Park, lever, part of the process also locks out the tranny from any user gear changes. It is a hard lock mechanism. If the Sure Park handle is not fully in the upright disengaged position, and or, the Sure Park handle linkage needs adjusting, this can also cause hard shifting of the transmission. This is right from the Owner's Manual in the using the Sure Park feature. If you have any type of 'questionable' tranny or shifting issues, they suggest you take your ride to a dealer and have them check out the Sure Park rod and linkage for a correct length and setting, so to be sure the Sure Park feature is FULLY disengaged. Just a FYI. Since taking delivery, I am having a blast! Joe

Test ride impressions
YamahaParExcellence replied to garyk's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
Interesting, as I came from the exact opposite opinion. I left a 2008 Wing, (owned five of them) because I found them boring, the ride sterile, and in riding my new SVTC home the 120 miles from the dealer on day of delivery, I had the most fun, and engaged ride, in sound, feel, breath of road feel , that over four decades and a half, aboard five different model year Wings, did not provide. It just goes to show...we all can ride a bike, and come towards it from all 360 degrees of personal need and expectation, and either a delivery of it, or not, will occur for all. Enjoy your Wing. Every one of our five always got us there. Your's will, too! Joe -
It could just be...and that would explain maybe some of us having trouble getting Toolbox to 'find' the software footprint. I wonder if the Toolbox software actually looks for a 16 GB device first before trying to find the folders, In using a 32 GB USB drive, I could never get it to not post: No Device Detected Bought a 16 GB USB stick just in case this is what is happening and will try a footprint on this one...and see if Toolbox picks up the drive....

Just wondering, as I am in the initial break in phase, I have noticed on a few occasions, that it seems some of the gears were hung up, and could not easily be downshifted. I had to use the double clutch technique to get the tranny to drop to the next lower gear. I just was wondering if anybody else, while breaking in the tranny and motor, experienced tight to hard or 'stuck' downshifts, and you had to slowly let out the clutch to have the tranny drop to the next lower gear?

I am so sorry to read of your loss. Pets..beloved pets are children, only, of another species. They cause the heart to grieve and feel the loss, no less. Condolences, Joe

Sure does...BTW, Chief...I ordered that ShowChrome custom Tour SVTC Windshield 4 inches wider, 2 inches taller...as well as an SVTC Service Manual. I am not going to install the windshield right away...but wanted it at home...for when I do. I have seen too many times, where I have bought something...and wanted to get for instance a remote control on a cassette tape deck years ago...and only waited one year. I then went to order it...and couldn't believe my ears, when the dealer said that the company Nakamichi no longer produced the (it was wired at the time) remote control for my model. That taught me a lesson, I never forgot. If you want something...and it is available...NOW...buy ...it....----->NOW! It might not even be in stock, or being made, even 6 months from now. I now have one...and that's all that matters! I learned the hard way years ago, with that wired remote, I never got a chance to purchase.

Right...I knew that FAT32 would be 'universal' but wanted to know what other format configurations, might the SVTC also recognize...and also...how large a stick in GB's can the system use? 32GB max? 64GB max? 128GB max? That would be good to know... Until someone truly does have that information, I suspect that the SVTC USB 2.0 can see a max of 32GB's storage on the stick. Just a guess.
-
I would not install this version yet...still pegged as Chief said, at the Feb version. That was the one that was borking the Logic Head... They still do NOT have this as an update on the Yamaha Canada SVTC software site. It still says that files are temporarily not available. You'd think that they would have shown the 'new modified' 12.0.6 as May 12/th..and not still Feb. I"m holding off, until I see what is posted to the Yamaha Canada site. Someone could have goofed at Yamaha USA and posted the one that was pulled.... Be careful out there...
-
Does anybody know..(no information in the SVTC Manual or Infotainment Manual, for what FORMATS the SVTC's USB 2.0 can read. Also, what is the max GB stick that the system will recognize? So, for Format types, you can have: exFAT32 NFTS FAT32 So, which formats of the above, does the SVTC USB system 2.0 use, and can recognize? I think I tried a 64GB USB 2.0/3.0 formatted by exFAT32 (you can only use exFAT32 or NFTS) for 64 GB's....and it did not read the stick. I don't know if it was the ex32FAT formatting, or the size of the stick at 64 GB's.

When my wife gets mad at me...and starts to grit her teeth...I quickly test the torque...by slipping in the 1/2 inch that has been set to 5,000 foot pounds of torque between her closing teeth. After she bites down and when I feel it click...I know that it is calibrated pretty much. Just use the Wife Test for calibration. Works like a charm!

Yamaha Navigation issue
YamahaParExcellence replied to American's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
Opened the DEV Mod folder, left it open...ran Toolbox..same, couldn't find the USB...D.O.A. Post Edit: I even put that open folder onto the ROOT dir of the USB stick. Still Toolbox said; No Device Detected. -
American, that is NOT your Navigation activation code...that is your Logic Head code...that will allow you to enter those numbers, and along with the hard key, be able to start your bike, if you have lost or dropped(broken) your Proximity Fob. If you have not already,....I strongly suggest that you write that set of digits down...on the back of a white business card, and place that in your wallet for safe keeping. Also make about 5 copies of that number sequence. If you ever lose this digital number...you will not be able to order a new part, or even start the bike. It costs over $4,000.00 to put in an entire new Logic Head into your bike (the brain of your bike...that controls by the Infotainment Software Suite, every feature and function of your bike. If you lose that sequence, you are screwed! Make many copies...and put them away safe, but always have one business card with that number in your wallet. You will need to input that number into your system, ALONG with using the hard key, to start your bike, if your Proximity Fob is lost, stolen, or the battery dies. Again, that is not anything to do with the Navigation system....that activation number is on the card that came with your bike documentation.

I certainly didn't get any USB stick...just the activation code card. But...Yamaha Canada is sending me something to get me up and going. It is a problem, not with the Venture...but with their Toolbox software. It can't find your loaded in fingerprint stick...and always comes up as No Device Detected. Yamaha knows about this...and is trying to get a fix for the software out...yeah..just like my SVTC delivery, lol...7 months from now...

2018 Star Venture
YamahaParExcellence replied to Rafterd's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
After owing five past Gold Wings...I can tell you...that even in stop and go, when those two side mounted fans kick in...that can, not always, but can push really hot air out of those twin rads, back at you. I have had that happen, but not on a regular basis. -

YamahaParExcellence replied to Rafterd's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
I won't be, Chief. I have plenty of movement to change the angle of my knees and thighs, so I'm good with just that monster long, foot board. -
SVTC paint issues
YamahaParExcellence replied to Yoopermoose's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
I say that I'd agree with that comment. I also wonder how many coats were applied before the Clear Coat. One? It looks that way to me, at least on the Tupperware. I'm a glass half full guy...and having said my piece about the paint job on my 042 serial number bike, I'll just do my best with scratch out rubs, sealant and regular washing waxing and move on. I don't want this to 'glass half empty' my entire usage and enjoyment. As for the 'enjoyment' quotient...WOW...WOW....WOW...and WOW! One ***H*LL*** of a bike...features, rides like a magic carpet (the ride, blows my stock 2008 Goldwing ride out of the fight ring,...even when new at the same mileage I have on Charlotte 3), and the ***SOUND*** from those hot looking pipes (great chrome job on metal, and great paint job on metal tank...only the plastic is less than owner satisfactory)...the sound is the best thing I have ever heard. It has authority...sitting at a light, while leaving that light...while cruising, and man oh man...they light up, in Sport Mode at full throttle..>BUT....BUT...they are not obnoxiously loud. They don't hurt the ears of fellow motorists, or make them angry that you are near them, or in front of them. No sir...and the complements I have received while at rest, or while waiting at a light...the fellow or gal to my right...commenting on my "really great looking bike there...", tells me that Yamaha...as the Knight says..."they...chose well." I am very happy to date with the bike...and will just accept what I feel could have been a better paint application on the plastic metrics. The paint on the gas tank is first rate. Other than that...NO COMPLAINTS OF ANY KIND! Over 'n out! "Charlotte is humming...I got the wondering lust, blues...and will take to the highway, my way". You sing it, Baby...you sing it for Papa!" Cheers, all! Happy Camper. -
2018 Star Venture
YamahaParExcellence replied to Rafterd's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
I think you will find the 'the plane boss, the plane, the heat boss, the heat'...to be in ownership, an non issue, or at least much exaggerated. How many of those demo riders even KNEW there were two lower warm-weather vents that should be opened as part of the manufacturer's heat management? Probably very few. Were they opened? Were they not, on all those YouTube or comments, Demo Rides? If you have those open for Summer riding...and open/closed for Spring/Fall/Winter...you are good to go. I also can't more highly suggest that a owner, put on those lower mid-body/waist/twin jugs wind deflectors, or cool air input towards the riders and engine, or deflection for colder riding ambient temperatures. I have run an SVTC with just the stock (upper) wind deflectors pitched in...and with my ride home...BOTH sets pitched in...and it is like a hurricane, LOL if you want it to be. Plenty of cooling air washing not only over both saddle positions, but the very engine itself. I wound't buy this bike, without them had I been given a chance to ride with, and without the lower accessory set. Just my usage suggestion. More air control wash and user direction, is better than LESS air control...and the money will be well spent. Cheers, -
Don, right on the card (Navigation Activate) ...a one time use (their verbiage) only for that bike. Now..I do believe that perhaps once that un-lock code is used, on that stick, you will be able to update from any other computer...but...you need that stick. A call for those interested, should be made to Yamaha USA or Canada, for clarification. But until then...and I am reading the back of the Navigation Activate Card...that is is a one time use, only, for that activation CODE, and that this code will be locked to your bike's Finger Print. Makes sense now, why they call the SVTC download to that USB stick...a 'finger print'. DRM in action folks...DRM in action. As to all your other owner scenarios...I don't know...but a call (probably a good thing for all of us to do...) to either Yamaha USA, or Yamaha Canada customer relations...to find out exactly why the card is needed...what the code actually makes happen..and what are the ramifications of the way they chose to set this all up. For that...I'd have to call myself. I only called to state that I could not get their vector solution to work...so they are sending me out, a Countermeasures USB Stick, what ever that is?!?? Dunno.

Hi American, yes..I got my SVTC Nav System Finger Print (they call it that...what the SVTC drops onto the USB stick connected) but it is their Yamaha Toolbox (you need to use this software to read what the SVTC put onto that stick) that will not see it upon my system. Unless you can use that one time use, Serial Number (access number) to the supplier's Nav site...if you can not on your own computer system, by means of the Toolbox software creating your now 'authorized' USB stick to keep using for updates with your SVTC's software, then you can NOT yourself, update your system with features for updated Maps. You'd have to go back each time...every time, to your supplying dealer...because it is on HIS system that your bike is now registered with the Nav Supplier, unless...unless the USB stick he used, once authorized, can be used on any computer...then you are OK. I guess to all the folks that had their Nav System working, on the day they picked up their bike, or had it delivered to them...I'd suggest that you find this out...you need the USB stick the dealer used to load in your system. He/she should give it to you...for that is the only stick that will update because of that unique one time use code that matches that stick JUST to your SVTC 'finger print'. I imagine they did that for reasons of software piracy, or DRM control. Same for any other type of software access and download. So, yes, your software on your SVTC read the USB, and can download a Finger Print if you want...but unless that stick now becomes authorized by your own system and that serial number THROUGH the Yamaha Toolbox portal...you will not be able to update your own system, at your leisure. I'd call your dealer and ask him how he updated your system..and if he did use a liaison USB stick...American...YOU need to have that stick, not him. Or...you keep having to go back and book an appointment with him/her. Yamaha Canada is sending me what they called a Countermeasures USB Stick to get me up and running, but I won't have it for my first trip...and what a bummer that is to me. It is...what it is...and I hope they will release a new version of their software (they are aware of this...they are getting request help calls from other new owners who are having the exact same problem with Toolbox not seeing their own bike's Finger Print files...) soon. Unless I can use my key code on my own system, I won't be able to update, UNLESS this Countermeasure Whatever bypasses this warning...I'll just have to sit tight...and be Navigation-less (my word) until then. About being in Japan...Honda still had a working Navigation system from the showroom floor even up to the 2017 model...so I don't think that might be the case...that the bike is manufactured in Japan...but is being RTM in North America. BTW...you should see the conversation this gorgeous bike has created when I have walked out of a Tim Horton's coffee shop...or restaurant...or even gassing up. I had one HD rider and his gal...doing their 'we see you, other biker...but won't turn our heads to acknowledge you (get that a lot with my Kawasaki) so I became nasty...I slowed down just enough to pass them by in the other lane very slowly...and WHAT A LAUGH...as soon as I became about 30 degrees on the left to their road position, BOTH their heads SNAPPED directly focused on my bike...she poked her rider in the ribs..and they both started an animated conversation...WITH HER SMILING...and talking a mile a minute in his left ear! Oh yeah, I would have paid anything to have been 'a fly upon the wall' listening in TO THAT CONVERSATION. When we pulled up together to the next light...they BOTH were eyeballing up down, back to front Charlotte and then the both of them made eye contact with me...and he (I almost fell off the bike, LOL) gave me a thumb's up with his clutch hand. We then motored out....and they stayed behind me, continually watching my ride, (noted that in my right hand mirror) until I turned off in front of them. So...will HD riders look at, and take this bike seriously. YOU HAD BETTER BELIEVE IT! LOL That alone...was worth the purchase price to ride. What a hoot!
