  1. Yama Mama, I only know you through this forum and the chat room. I guess I thought you rode your own bike. Unless there is a physical reason you can't ride your own bike, you should take the MSF course and then get your own bike. My wife rode her own bike 25 years ago, then we raised two kids, and I got new hips. Then I got another bike (my Royale) and started riding again. I asked my wife to ride with me and she did for a couple short hops, but immediately said she was going to get her own bike. I helped her find one, but it was her decision with her money, and she loves her Honda Shadow Ace Tour. It is a great bike for around town or highway, we have taken several decently long trips together on our own bikes. It may not be for you, but I LOVE seeing my wife on her own bike. She enjoys it and we have a blast. Her bike wasn't that expensive, and I even like riding it from time to time (when she will let me!) Check out some local clubs and dare I say it.....the local GWRRA might be a good one to get to know since they are almost everywhere, and I love riding with our local chapter in Peoria, IL. I am sure you have friends also in your area that can help you get going safely. A small bike to start is a good way to go. You can always sell it and move up, but starting out on too big a bike may be a bad move, so try some out and see if you like any of them. In any case, best wishes.
  2. Now that was fun, back to Gold Wing talk...eh?
  3. Reddevil, well....nothing says your bike has to be running, take a big piece of the bike in your cage and get the pic!
  4. Bob, they are all over around Centralia IL where my wife is from, we just don't have a trip planned to go there soon. Will keep eyes open though!
  5. Karl, Hope you didn't take my post as anything other than information. Your 1C is always good here! That is an interesting road, similar to the north/south main street in my home town of Arthur, IL. It is divided in the middle to two different counties. BEcause of that, Arthur has the county fair for BOTH counties, both having decided splitting the cost with a town in both counties was a good deal. It has worked for over a century I believe!
  6. Kevin, I think I got the socket set size wrong, it is 3/8" not 1/4" I fixed this in the listing earlier. I will just take the pliers from another kit I have and add to the kit I have, won't be red handles, but I like things to be complete! Thanks for the info. Not sure if 2 or 3 or more allen wrenches is correct. Maybe someone else could help us find out if they have other kits?
  7. Karl, You have a valid point, but not every target needs to be accessible by everyone. There have been some that were pretty much unique to warm states, some to those near an ocean, some dealing with snow, etc. Some were about pumpkin patches (I got one of those targets) and for sure not every state has a pumpkin patch. Also, those state line signs are at almost every road crossing, not just the interstates. At least in my part of the country. yes, I will need to ride to the state line to get one, but that is part of the game, get out and ride. Of course if I lived in the middle of Texas, I might just sit this one out! And sometimes the fun is to find a way to get the target within the rules in an unusual way. If this target isn't practical for you, wait a few days, there will be one you can get without a huge ride!
  8. Oh joy, I will try to get one of the signs as you come into Illinois. "Welcome to Illinois, Land of Lincoln. (insert recent Gov name) Governor (soon to be in prison)" Or " Illinois where we have more ex governors in prison than any other state!" Somewhere there may still be a sign with Blago's name on it.
  9. Ok, here is what I got in the kit I bought recently: Venture Royal zippered bag with logo Yamaha Tire gauge, 0-40 psi with Yamaha logo on strap that holds down flap of black plastic slip cover. Says Yamaha on the dial face on bottom side. 6 3/8" sockets: 19, 17, 14, 12, 10, 8 mm Say Mitoloy on them 8" 3/8" ratchet (no id of any kind), and 3" extension (extension says Mitoloy) 6" long adjustable wrench single flat type Box wrenches of 27, 22, 19 mm all say Yamaha double end offset box wrenches of 17-14, 12-10 say Yamaha on one side and made in Japan on the other. spark plub socket, double hex ends no id or size of any kind Screwdriver handle (says made in Japan) and three inserts, two phillips (sm and large) and one flat these were rubber banded together, and the rubber band had mostly melted, could have been factory or added by previous owner. inserts have no id or numbers of any kind. three allen wrenches, 6, 5, 2 mm with size and KKT on the two smaller ones, the bigger one looks to have Loy on it after the size, but looks messed up. three double ended open end wrenches: 17-14, 12-10, 10-8 say Yamaha on one side One extension handle that will fit the adjustable wrench and the three flat box wrenches. No id of any kind All these parts look brand new, never used. zero corrosion. I got lucky! I understand I may be missing some pliers, if anyone knows of anything else missing, let me know.
  10. I would be willing to see the You in the engine chrome. And I guess the horse and rider doesn't have to be mounted. So I say it is got, what is next!
  11. Kevin, I think it had pliers, but let me look. I can also give you the full contents list. I know it had an adjustable wrench and six sockets, a socket wrench and short extension along with a lot of other stuff. will get back to you tomorrow sometime.
  12. Boo, Yes, the kit included the tire gauge, I was shocked! I did not go after a sales brochure, I do that for my old cars, but not bikes for some reason. Also, no factory cover. The bike had a cover, but a nice older generic one. BTW, I had bought a used Cassette cover on E-bay and paid a ton for it, and it was showing some scratches (NOT misrepresented though). I was showing it to someone before a ride, and must not have gotten it clipped all the way in and it blew off when I wasn't looking, went back but couldn't find it. So I took a chance and WOW, Yamaha had them new for less than I paid for one used on e-bay so I ordered a new one. Still have it. Took me a long time to find the passenger controls for the sound system.
  13. When I got my '86 VR about 6 years ago, it was missing some things like the owners manual, cover for the Cassette, tool kit. I found most everything except the tool kit. Oh several of them showed up on E-bay, but I always lost out....TO THE SAME PERSON! yes, someone was hogging kits and cornering the market on VR tool kits. Now these are cool, with the VR logo, and more than just base tools, including a ratchet and socket set, but wow, this guy was bidding $200 and more sometimes for these things. I eventually gave up, bought a kit from another Yamaha and made up my own kit. then a couple weeks ago, I saw a nearly perfect complete kit on E-bay and decided to try. Got it for more money that it should cost for sure, but still less than those top bids a few years ago! So now my quest is complete, now I just need to get the bike running its best again! and fix a leak, and......... Anyone happen to know that E-bay'er that bought all those tool kits?
  14. Good for you. Don't really need any gear other than what you need to normally ride, and if your group goes on a base, you should make sure you meet their regs, usually helmet (DOT), boots, long pants, jacket of some sort, and highly reflective vest. Check with your local base to be sure. I have gone on a local base several times though and they never required the vest, but I have one. A good place to get one is a local construction safety equipment store. Don't have to have a vest with a lot of patches, or leather, I have found PGR to be inclusive. Main goal is to show respect to the military and on missions. I never served, have always been open about that and welcomed warmly by those in PGR that served. Always remember the event is about the military person being honored, and their family. You are background and support. Oh about flags, nice to have them, not required. Be sure to have them secured and safe if going on the road with any flag, especially a big one. There is a LOT of good info on the main PGR site about flag setups.
  15. Dan oh, Well, I want to protest! Looks like that hubcap might be hanging on that shepherds hook! NO NO, I am kidding! Of course you got it! Nice pic. Wanted to tell the story about Rick Haywood and I riding to Springfield, IL Sunday, to get a Baton target for the GL1800 forum. Had to have a picture of me and the baton in front of the IL state capital. (Rick has started a similar contest on this site, so he got his IL target while there!). I saw a used car dealer called......The Hubcap House. Not a hubcap in sight, not even on the cars! What a bummer! Oh, while getting the pictures, I reminded Rick that here were three bikes (my wife was on her bike) illegally parked near the state capital, taking pictures with what looked like pipe bombs in our hands! (the batons for both contests are PVC pipes with caps on the end to hold the paperwork about the various stages). Capital police drove by twice, but left us alone, guess we didn't look like terrorists! LOL
  16. The fun thing of this is that EACH team will need people from EVERY state and sometimes several. The route is variable, but to avoid backtracking, do a little planning when you have the baton, and try to get all states in an area before moving on. For instance, don't do all the south and leave out Florida, then wind up in Seattle with Florida still to get! I will be on the South team since Rick lives about 5 miles from me and he is starting the North team! I will lie in wait for the baton to get near IL from the south. But if rick needs some company on his ride to pass along the baton, I can ride with him, and I won't let the air out of his tires, I can be for the South and still be nice to a Northerner.!
  17. There used to be an entire building covered with hubcaps on the south side of Peoria, was there about a year ago. I guess I could cheat, I have an old spinner hubcap off a 50's Oldsmobile, that I could hang on one of my buildings but that wouldn't be nice!
  18. A lot of younger people won't know who he was, but Earl was super man in the music world for all of his life. He can now go sit in with the superband headed up by Chet Atkins, and there will be beautiful music!
  19. Rick, Well, last night was storms, and I thought I saw a forecast for rain today, but looking outside, I see that isn't the case. Looks perfect. Want to go for a ride and get the target together?
  20. I have been on my bike the last four days, 1500 miles to Atlanta and back to help a friend pick up a new bike. I know where there is "elevated" transportation in a couple spots, but as usual weather is supposed to be iffy next couple of days. Keep up the good work everyone!
  21. Rick, sorry to hear about your family's loss.
  22. scratches on the working (where the seals ride) portion of the tubes is NEVER OK. Especially if you can feel it with your fingernail. A seal will pretty much always leak if the tube is scratched from what I hear. I know some mechanics that successfully buff the tubes with emery cloth, but that probably won't work if you can feel the scratch. I don't claim to be the last word on this so hopefully someone here will chime in with actual experience on the subject, but I didn't see a reply, so I offer the above as what I have heard, and my common sense!
  23. Karl, Excellent catch! thems was some purty big frog legs, take a big fire to cook em! OK, on to something baseball related. If my dad was still alive, I could get a picture of him watching two games on TV (main TV with a camping portable on top) and a radio tuned to a third game.........and him sleeping through all of them. Be tough to get the bike in the living room though. Should not be too hard to get something baseball related this time of year!
  24. Mine has an accessory light package for the trunk with yellow turn signals, run and stop lights. This kit is no longer available but was somewhat popular so I don't expect it to be "rare" but still, it is nice to have the extra light. For those that have it, I found that you can look around an auto parts store bulb section and find regular bulbs that are just a tiny bit bigger and brighter if you want more light. I will try to post a picture.
  25. Jay, he started out wanting to be a goalie, and has subbed from time to time when the regular was injured or sick, but he has found a spot for now on defense. He is great at stopping anyone on a breakaway, just takes the puck away, and when he gets the puck and a tiny bit of room, he just skates around and through the other team and either gets the goal or sets up an assist. He is unselfish and plays clean (it is in the rules here, but not all the other teams have played him clean, they have been known to try to hurt him, but he is tough, shakes it off). His dad, my son, didn't skate, but since Ethan enjoys playing so much, my son Ken has taken up skating. In open skates, it is fun to watch E race around ken and run circles around him. The kid can skate backwards like a pro. My 6 YO Granddaughter also wants to play hockey, and with her brother helping, she will have fun and be good. Who knew a schmuck from corn country would have grandkids that play on ice!
