My 86 VR had a loud gear type whine around 45 mph on steady power mostly, but some on decel. Local shop had to remove the output shaft on the engine (near the left foot as it turns out!) to seal a leak. This (disturbing the gear alignment slightly at the output shaft point) along with lubing everything he could find in the driveline led to near silence. as with many that have "cured" the Venture Whine or chirp, this may come back, but for now I am happy.

Touch up paint
dynodon replied to Z Factor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Those first pictures look white and Grey metallic to me. Unless the color is way off, there isn't any brown or gold on the bike other than the stripe. Check out the later pictures with a gold and brown that is easy to spot. Is there a chance the bike has been repainted? -
Freebird, Great story and a good lesson for your son. Yesterday I was sitting at the front of the right lane at a red light at a busy intersection in our city and the left lane was empty and the left turn lane was occupied. There were several cars across in the opposing lane, and other cars waiting to turn on the cross street. I had a red light and the cross street still had green. Woman in a compact car came past in the lane next to me (left) at probaby 5 over the 35 limit, and ran the light without ever slowing. Of course she had a cell phone to her ear. Never slowed or gave an idea that she could have killed someone if there had been cross traffic. Luckily there was none, so it wasn't a near miss, just a drive through. No police to witness. Really scary. In your case Freebird, you were in a deserted area and although you had a loss of attention, I suspect had there been lots of cars in the intersection like we had yesterday, you would have easily made the stop and been safe. Been a long time since I have gotten a warning or a pass, and I maybe average one ticket every 5 years? I used to get warnings when younger, but I guess they expect you to know better when older? Anyway, I am always polite, and take responsibility if I am in the wrong.

I just put those on my wife's Honda Shadow Ace. We both wanted more rear lights on the bike, and these work GREAT! Add running lights, stop lights and don't interfere with the turns. Great idea. Since I have extra turns and brakes on my tour pack, I haven 't put them on my royale though. Think it lights up pretty good as-is.

212 KPH computes to about 131 mph. ON WOOD! I want to know how smooth that surface was and how many splinters you got if you fell! Also, look how all those people were piled up in the pit area with no protection or wall. Scary compared to today. Thanks for posting that.

Wow, sure glad the two of you came away mostly OK. Bikes can be replaced easy, people, not so much.

Passenger CB/Radio Remote
dynodon replied to 86Royale's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I bought my '86 royale, I found the same thing, missing passenger controls. I tried for several months before I finally won one on E-bay at a reasonable price. the unit comes with a plug and about a 1 foot long coiled cord that stretches to about 3 feet, and the small box that clips into the square empty section of your control center. One of the plugs is for the control, the other is for the headset. Keep searching E-bay. -
You can probably figure half the bike weight and half the passengers on each tire. plus all the load in the bags on back. A trailer is a great help in this regard. take everything out of the bags that is heavy and put in the trailer. If you have say 350 pound trailer/load, you should have about 30-35# on the ball. (close to 10% of total weight of the trailer/load in it on the ball, you do NOT need more than that unless your trailer is very poorly designed). That equates to a few pounds less that might be carried in the trunk (since the ball is out farthur, it magnifies the weight a little bit over that in the trunk and a bit more over that in the side bags). Sure means we are running close on the load weight of the tire. That spec should have quite a bit of safety margin, but keeping tire pressure (cold) near the top is essential, and checking for excess heat (check the sidewall too!) is important. don't forget the front tire and trailer tires.

Where have all the 1st gens gone?
dynodon replied to 91nwl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Neat bike, happens to be exactly like mine except for a couple of bolt-ons. Enjoy! -
I have a drop light from Sears, florescent with twin bulbs and two switches, low and high. Provides plenty of light and is so far indestructible. I tried some severe duty bulbs and they went Psszzzt! almost as fast as regular bulbs, but they were a lot more expensive. Forget LED units, I do have one that is cordless, but even though it has something like 50 led's it will only light up about a 6 square inch space and then only if close too it. Still, it comes in handy if I need something without a cord. Blueish light is also hard to see with my almost 60 year old eyes and glasses.

Does this battery work with the computer system? The one I have in now is bypassed so the alert light isn't on all the time, be nice to have the system hooked back up so it works. Don

Don't make this mistake
dynodon replied to Z Factor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There are some products that are designed to fix that grey look on black plastic, Some are nothing more than black shoe polish or black paint. I have a small detailing business and sell something that might fix it both ways, while preserving the plastic instead of covering it up. Something called Wurth Rubber Care. Works great on that black plastic on door handles, around windshield wipers, on truck bumpers etc. if interested give me a PM and I can give you my web site. -
Excellent! Thanks for sharing.

Roadkill, glad you got out. Sitting home near Peoria, IL, I went out and cleaned the bugs off from the last ride about a month ago and thought about going out, but didn't. Wish I had now. Yea, keep that cruise off if there is even a hint of slick out there!

I have considered GPS, but when it comes down to it, they are too limited. Can't see the big picture, too fiddly. I have been experimenting with the perfect paper map system, and one with easily turned pages with print-outs I make from Google maps or similar programs works great. OR just get a state map and fold accordingly. Currently I tape a business card folder to my tank, and tape the maps to it. The long thin pages are perfect and I can turn the pages and tuck them in. Found it at an office supply store. Haven't seen a GPS yet that can give the same view.

I found this some time ago and it doesn't take long to beat the game and get good. Click on the link below the main screen to see a lot of other simple fun games. I like the moon rocket one, and check out the voice on the first game on the upper left. So cute you could fall over with too much cute! Game over!

After buying my royale and fighting the whine, most of which came from me! I went with these for longer trips: http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/profmusearpl1.html Not expensive, MUCH better than foam plugs (you can carry on a conversation and hear music from your headsets well).

I don't understand why the need for a huge engine like an 1800? the 1300 on my Royale has more power than I will ever need, even if I add a trailer and ride two-up. I don't want a motorcycle that gets worse mileage than many cars. I love the Gen I look, and wish Yamaha would make a true touring bike again instead of the cruiser style Gen 2 (or Ultra etc). I like the better protection of a full fairing and the lighter feel of nothing major on the handlebars. Water cooling is best for summer cruising and engine life, and should be best for emissions too. What does Yamaha offer in japan? I know big bikes over there are outrageously expensive and hard to license, but don't they offer something modern there? I am looking at a BMW K1200 LT or maybe a wing. If I wanted a Harley, I would buy a Harley.

If you make it to Georgia, you MUST do the T.W.O. Campground near Suches GA. (stands for Two Wheels Only). Great road leading up to the campground, and the owner used to do a deal where if you could hang with him on the ride the rest of the way to the top of the mountain from the campground in the evening, you got a free night or something. I think they are still going, the wife and I rode there several years ago. Yep, just googled them and they have added a lodge, mobil home and other nice things including a restaurant. Check it out: http://www.twowheelsonly.com/ Really, you should do this if at all possbile.

Got my 2 yesterday, gave both to my wife, one for her bike, and one for her to give to me! thanks for doing this project Don

Key sentence in that article for me was that most accidents happen in the first few days or week of ownership. When I got my royale after a 20+ year break, I took nearly a month to get to know the bike a little at a time late this summer. A friend I met online introduced me to a local group, and he and another rider took time to go with me on my first exploratory highway rides. After two months I was allowed to become temporary Ride Captain, and may have that become offical for next year. I am aware of the dangers at all times, and don't hot rod my near 100 hp Yamaha. It helps to have friends look after you and to take your time getting back on the road. Also, I am practicing some advanced safety techniques and my wife and I both will take the MSF course this spring, even though I don't need it for a license like my wife does, we both agree it makes good safety sense.

Havent had a real tree in years, we first went to a large fake tree, then that got to be too much trouble with the kids grown and the grandkids doing their thing at their parents and us just hosting a little thing each year. So we went with a smaller fake tree, but now we have the best thing. About a 2 foot tall, three piece tree made of painted glass or something like that with a lot of little lights sticking out of it. Takes up about 1 square foot on top of the TV cabinet. and one modest box in the closet.

I just put a set of the kuryaken pegs with the mount and extensions and the Stirrups. GREAT setup with huge adjustability and great quality. Not cheap, but I got a nice discount at RTR Cycles in Washington IL.
