  1. Most roads are clear in Illinois right now, If you can get out of WI and IL, you should have it made till you get back home. Looks like near Rockford I-39 is patchy. Check out this site: http://wrc.gettingaroundillinois.com/winterroadconditions/ You have my number, I can meet up about anytime. I am hooking up my heated gloves and getting the toe warmers ready, will ride to meet you if roads permit. You have a CB? What channel will you be on?
  2. I had a non-Yamaha rotor put on the rear of my bike a year ago, it squeals. Not bad enough to make me change it yet. But I will go with THIS rotor next time. I did a lot of searching and it is cheaper than the Yamaha one (if you can still get it) and looks like it won't make noise: http://www.perfectbrakes.com/products.asp?cat=8079
  3. My dad was color blind, luckily I am not, nor any of my children/grandchildren. Dad mentioned it a couple times but never complained. He implied that he couldn't see the colors light but just knew what positions they were in, and that he could see when it they were on. Earl, I assume that you can still see when a red light comes on, is on or flashes, just not see the color? My dad was in training to be a bomber Bombardier when the war ended. He said they liked color blind people as spotters/Bombardiers because they could see through camo better? Could that be possible? Don't know why he would say that if someone had not told him. As for me, I am OK with Yellow turn signals, and OK with all red. I do wish they would just make it uniform though, and if so, I would be just fine if they mandated yellow turns. Oh and I am OK with Blue Dots. I think they are illegal in IL, but Thanks Earl for a perspective on that accessory that I never thought of!
  4. I have stored old cars for many years, and sometimes the float sticks. I have had luck every time just tapping the carb with a small hammer. Try tapping the carbs you can get to with a small hammer. Not trying to move anything, just apply a little shock to the part. It might work and will take only a couple minutes. Seafoam is a good suggestion, but the hammer might work quicker.
  5. I can get on the main page OK, and I deleted the cookies, but when I click on the link to register I just get "no input file specified", the same thing with any of the drop down links to get to anywhere important. Just now found a page to submit a question, and when trying to post it, I got "Your email was not submitted for the following reasons:You are coming from an unauthorized domain." Now what does that mean? Their site is still messed up. Have no problems here or on any other site I visit.
  6. I let my membership in the Venturers site lapse, and now would like to visit some of the friends I made there, but can't sign back up, keep getting "No input file specified" when I click on most pages. Can't get anywhere to sign up again. I posted about this earlier, and someone offered to contact the management of that site for me but I lost the info. If someone has contacts there and can help with this, let me know. And thanks to VentureRider MGMT for being friendly about my questions about:happy65: this "rival" site. I will always be here, but like to spread the love around!
  7. I got a short ride in last week, but didn't get anywhere near water or sand, other than that on the roads around here. Now we have an all-new layer of snow and salt, and it doesn't look like it will be nice for the next couple of weeks. So there is nobody here in warm weather areas that wants to get the latest target? Everlasting fame and joy await those who participate!
  8. After smoking for 10 years, I quit 30 years ago. haven't breathed in any smoke since then except from campfires and tires at the track! Good for you! The hard part is pretty much over. Watch out for things like emergencies/bad news etc. Moods can give you the urge to go back to old habits. RESIST! At prices today, you can buy a lot of stuff with the money you save. Keep thinking of the new chrome for the scoot!
  9. Honda makes the Ultimate touring bike, plain and simple. I love my '86 VR and I have ridden and like very much the RS Venture. But the GW isn't twice what the Venture is, maybe 30%, and if you figure some wild discounts for last years Venture, you may get closer, but hardly half the price. The Venture is the best value in a big bagger no doubt. As for Harley, I was curious, but not until I rode one for 600 miles over the holidays (rental in Florida) did I realize it was a great bike. Not for everyone, but then NO bike is for everyone, that is why we are lucky to have a choice. I wish Yamaha would bring the Venture back to closer to what it was like my '86. I like a water cooled V-4 big bagger with all the features, but don't need 900 pounds and 30 something MPG. That is why I am considering the Ultra Classic Electra Glide. The current Venture is too much like a Harley, and I might as well have the original, and the GW is too wide for me to ride comfortably and doesn't get good MPG. At least the Harley is in the mid-upper 40's for MPG. Don't knock an Electra till you get a couple days on one! Keeping my VR though, I only wish I could buy a brand new one.
  10. I would imagine that Clearview could help you out with this?
  11. There should be no additional leaks. Many people have heard about synthetics leaking and thus when they change, they look for them. quite often, the leaks were there, or just start for no reason other than it was time. Why does synthetic have a rep for leaks? Because when synthetics first came out, they were among the very first oils to have detergents in them. At the time cars had leather and real rubber seals that leaked anyway, but the oils of the time had a lot of parafin in them and the accumulated dirt from no detergent led to some leaks being blocked by the gunk inside the engines. You start using any detergent oil, and the leaks that were plugged by the gunk start leaking. They would leak with any detergent oil, but synthetics got the rep. Also, people feel synthetics are "thinner" than regular oil, and that leads to people looking for and expecting leaks. In reality, when cold, synthetics flow better than regular oil that turns to thick sludge in cold weather. This gives better starting, less wear. Once oil gets hot synthetics are THICKER than regular oil because they retain their viscosity better. Thus they leak less when under pressure, but no oil, not even that with huge amounts of STP in it, will stop leaks under pressure. I have many examples of people switching to synthetic and their oil use goes DOWN. In my own case, my '89 SHO (this was in 1993) used a quart of 10-30 regular oil every 2500 or so miles. Switched to Amsoil 0-30 and oil use (from leaks or burning) went DOWN to about a quart in 4000 miles. Why? Less friction, Synthetics won't evaporate as quick as regular oil, and it keeps it viscosity better when hot, leading to less oil getting past the rings/seals internally. Most oil use is from burning the oil, usually through valve guides and also rings. Synthetic helps with this. I am sure the leaks RandyA mentions happened, but I doubt seriously if Synthetic was the cause.
  12. Good photography, but most if not 100% of the cars were Franklin Mint or Danbury Mint models. I have many of them on my shelf. I think they are great, but I would never take credit for creating them. Not sure where the houses and other things come from, but I suspect they are also models that were bought, not made. Putting them in realistic scenes takes some talent, but not THAT much. If he created the scenes then I give the person much credit. But again, the cars and trucks were all bought as they are.
  13. If you need advice on overnight in the Peoria, Bloomington, IL area when you come through, let me know. If I know when you are coming through, I would like to just ride with you for a while. As for when you are in Louisville, consider riding to S. Indiana a bit, the area up to French Lick is beautiful, and you should see the French Lick and West Baden resorts in that city, they are nothing short of an event in themselves. If you like horses, you should visit some of the major horse farms in the Louisville area. I have been to some barns there that are better than my house by a long shot! Hope you have a great trip.
  14. I find my hands need heat more than anywhere else. I have an '86 and I run heated gloves, radio, cb, GPS wired to the battery, and have a pair of fog/driving lights. With everything on, at idle, the meter goes low, but at highway speeds I am fine. I turn off the gloves or the aux lights depending on which one I need most at city speeds and that solves it. I use toe warmers (expose to air, they heat) in my boots, layer everywhere else, and I am fine. The Baker FOOT WINGS are WONDERFUL! They protect from wind and rain, just pop them off in the summer or when dry.
  15. We have an HP 2200 printer. Laser, fast and really reliable till they get fairly old, then the laser spinner thing (yea, technical term) can freeze up, but the one we have was repaired for $40. You can find them all over the place on E-bay for $60 to $150. Cartridges aren't very expensive and last a long time. You can get injet printers that are dirt cheap brand new, but check the price of replacement ink cartridges. they can run you to the poor house if you print a lot. I got a D2660 while on the road when another printer quit on me. Super cheap, but now that I have it at home it works great but the standard ink refills are very expensive. I found some refilled extended size ones that save some, but may dump the cheap printer for something more expensive that isn't as costly to keep going! If you don't do a lot of prints, then the cheap one should work fine though.
  16. Got one this summer with my car, $5000 damage, too hot to get any meat from the animal. Then about two weeks ago we got one in our back pasture. The deer had tried to jump a fence and failed, gutted itself pretty bad. Was dying but not quick. Our land is within city limits and not being a hunter, I didn't have anything big enough (410 and 22 rifle) to dispatch the animal. Called police, they put a slug in it and put it out of its misery. City workers were delighted to get a fresh kill that wasn't hit by a truck, and said they would drop by some sausage for my son who would like to go deer hunting someday soon. So two the hard way. Remember: Wherever Bambi goes, nothing grows!
  17. I have a near horror story about cancer and doctors. The wife had a small mole that was changing on her right shoulder on the back. Went to one Dr. who did a biopsy. Got called a couple days later to come in. We sat down and the DR. (and now I say that loosely) said, without fanfare, that it was cancer and the ONLY treatment was radical surgery. He was going to take about 80% of her back muscle, everything under the arm and down the side, and the muscle on the right front and breast. As the wife and I were both in tears he shoved forms at us and said he had an operating room waiting and she could be under in an hour. We were stunned. Could not believe we were talking to a human being, let alone a doctor. We said NO, and still crying left quickly before he had us handcuffed and carried to the operating room/waiting room. We felt that threatened. Went to some close friends who had friends in medicine and found another doctor. He said, why not do a much less radical surgery with about a 2" radius and a 4" scar. If the cancer hadn't spread, we were done, if it had, then pretty much what the first doctor said was the best way to guarantee a long life. Luckily the cancer had NOT spread. the wife has been on close watch for the last 20 years, and she is whole, thank God and a good doctor. I kiss that scar every morning when she will let me, because it is a beautiful thing. I had prostate cancer diagnosed, and was given all sorts of options and info, but, because of certain conditions and because I was fairly young and it was the slow growing type, we went with beam radiation. Now about 3 years out, I am still near 100% in all ways, with some minor side effects. We have found that decisions like these do NOT have to be made within minutes hours or even a few days. Take the time to go over your options before making decisions, don't be afraid to get a second or third opinion.
  18. Your foot brake pedal mis adjusted and keeping the brake lights on?
  19. The picture just shows the button and a key blank, there is no description that I could find, or picture of it in the key slot. I kind of suspected that the button went on top of the key, but I would never trust that a joyriding kid or a thief would be fooled by that. I don't get why anyone would want one if that is all it is. Don
  20. Looked at the stealth key, and didn't get it, no explanation either. can someone tell me how that works? T hanks
  21. Helllooooo out there! Anybody home? Stuck here in Fun & Frivolity we sure are getting the responses huh? Got more snow on the road today so won't be riding (yep, I am a snow/ice panzy on two wheels!) Some of you in warm weather states, go find a beach! If no response in a few days, how about re-setting the target?
  22. Had a cousin that was a plankowner on the USS Saratoga (CV-60) and the former crew are trying hard to get it as a permanent display like the Midway. If there are any Navy folk here that would like to save another Carrier from the scrap yard, go to: http://www.saratogamuseum.org/
  23. Check out the really "new" Buicks. The new Regal is from the Opel line in Germany, and is one of the best cars around over there. For once, the good cars from Europe will come to the US. The first manual trans Buick in a LONG time! The base engine is a 4 cyl with about 180 hp, but the step up is a turbo with 220 hp. The expected GS will have 255 hp in a hotter 4 cyl turbo. Now I don't usually get excited about 4 cyl cars, I have a 340 hp 300C Hemi, but my next car better get at least 30 mpg, and it would be nice to get 35-40. Not many will do that, but the new Buick and some other GM cars may be fun and fast enough to entertain. Not your fathers Buick for sure. Not much being sold today has much DNA from the Left lane bandit, turn signal on forever crowd, even the current Caddy Deville is a great handling car that rides superb and takes curves, while getting 27-29 on the highway! I have driven a few and they are impressive. Ford is also ramping up. Only Chrysler is now a little behind the curve, but I like my 2005 "Mercedes" Chrysler, it gets 26-27 on the highway at 80 mph, and drives like a dream. The new SHO has 365 hp and 350 lb ft of torque from 1200 rpm! and gets 26+ mpg. There is some good "American" stuff out there to compete with Japan Inc, and the Germans.
  24. Managed to get the bike out today (Saturday 1-23) in the afternoon. The fog in IL was THICK even in town, and I had no desire to test how bad it was in the country. Roads still wet, not raining, but everything got wet. Took longer to leather up than to take the ride. Just 15 minutes. No beaches in sight though. But the little bit of a ride was enough to brighten my day.
  25. I got out for about 15 minutes, just in town, the fog was WAY too thick to go out much. But I HAD to get out! took longer to leather up than it did to take the ride!
