If you don't always have a friend to hold the bike straight up, then use a 2X4 or other piece of wood under the kickstand to hold the bike almost straight up. Once you get the oil level correct, then put the bike on the side stand and see where the level is then. Mark it with a marker and that way you can check it anytime you want on the side stand.

I can understand your frustration, but have you had other "good" experiences with J&P? I have done business with them and no problems. Sometimes, a business can just have a bad day or two.... or more. I run a very small business, and only have myself to blame if there is a mistake made, and on one poor guys order, I made three in a row! If I had a cat-0-nine tails I would have used it on myself, but I just apologized and finally got it right. I hope the customer comes back. In this case J&P has many employees, and some care more than others, some are better at details than others. Did you try asking to talk to the owner, or manager? Maybe you could cut them some slack? If not, of course it is your right to vote with your bucks and never go back. Recently I had a problem with a Tourmaster heated glove. The company is going the extra mile to make it right so far, and I couldn't be happier. Mistakes or bad items happen, and if the company makes it right, and admits their error, I don't hold it against them. Now if they mess up four or five times in a row like Fed Ex did for me (and they never tried to make it right!), then I also vote with my pocketbook, and don't come back!

Bob, the wife and I did get that ride today, about 45 degrees, sunny, and we rode to lunch to meet our youngest son (doesn't ride, but he is a driving school instructor, so he is OK). We had a great ride. I guess you are getting back just in time, supposed to rain Saturday night or Sunday I hear. Safe journey, and thanks for taking us all along through your posts.

Ride Like a Pro.. on a Venture?
dynodon replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
tried the clutch/brake/gas a lot of times with my Gen I and it never went into neutral. Maybe you have something wrong with your tranny/shifter? Are you accidentally hitting the shifter when you do this? -
Bob, Supposed to be near 50 today around Peoria, IL, the wife and I will go for lunch on bikes. Turns out I have to go to an event in my cage in Chicago area Saturday. Hope to get another ride in Sunday. Glad you are having a great trip, best wishes for continued good weather and good rides all the way home to that gal that has been so supportive. Oh, man I need to get out more, my "states map" is pathetic!

Ride Like a Pro.. on a Venture?
dynodon replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have practiced the techniques in that video on my Gen 1VR. When I truly get to the lean angles they show, I have had high heart rates, and am not comfortable with them yet. But they have helped me tighten up my turn-arounds so I can easily to it in a two lane road without fear. All it takes is practice. I don't see where a RSV and an Ultra Glide are that different in center of gravity, both have gas tanks up high, both have V engines in about the same position, and both have similar body kits. Keep practicing in a wide open parking lot, and you will get those tight turns, and it will take some time to get comfortable with them. But if all you get is BETTER at turns and make them tighter (if not super tight) you have gained valuable skills. -
Nice Picture Bob, and a great choice for a new target. I have several candidates near me, but will hold off so someone else can play. Remember, if you have a problem getting the picture because nobody else is around, you can do what I and others have done, use your mirror to get YOU in the picture while you shoot the front of the bike and the target....meets the spirit of the rules and makes it easier for one person without a tri-pod and timer camera to get the shot! Also don't have to get off the bike. But you get extra points and pay for beauty and landscape etc. Just don't expect the check in the mail real soon!

So Bob, you comin' back through Illinois? Want another escort for a few miles? We have good weather forcast for the next few days. Went for a ride today and didn't even use my electric gloves! Let me know if you are coming through Bloomington again.

Another Center Stand Question
dynodon replied to elmicko's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
About leaving the side stand down when coming off the center stand. I have had my bike hit the side stand when taking it off the center stand when I accidentally leave it down, that is why I never leave it down. Also have had it get on top of my foot...THAT HURTS. SO I learned the hard way to put the side stand up when coming off the center, and also when moving the bike around. to get out of my garage there is about a 3" drop where the floor transitions to the drive. If the side stand is down, it can hit as the bike drops, and I have had the bike almost go over on me to the right. Maybe leaving the side stand down works for some, maybe I am just more of a clutz, but leaving the side stand down may not work for all. So make your own choice, but I mention the problems you can have when leaving it down because they are real possibilities. -
Demo the tape player.........I just fell off my chair!

Center Stand
dynodon replied to SC89Venture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Someone said that pulling up on the grab rail wasn't that important. I disagree. Especially for those that are lightweight people, you may not have enough weight to put the bike up just stepping on the center stand. By pulling up on the grab rail AS you push down with your foot on the stand, you almost double your strength with much less effort or muscle straining effort. Now don't go busting a gut or pulling all sorts of muscles, but pulling up on the grab rail is KEY to getting the bike up easily and safely. I am 300# and pretty strong, and I still use the hand rail pull, and it makes the process SO much easier. Most people I see struggling putting their bike on the center stand, are doing it by just stepping on the stand or by pulling back on the bars. That just isn't using your muscles in a smart and safe way. Pull up on that grab rail (you will quickly get the exact position to be in for maximum effect) and the process is so much easier. When you try it you will see that you are in a straight line, using your leg muscles and arm muscles, and your back is not much of the process, as it should be. -
Way to go Bob, have a beer for us! (after the ride!) Too bad about the rocket launch, Heck why not explore some more of those interior two-lanes for a couple more days? Get that picture of the beach yet? Edit: OH, if you get as far south as Lake Okeechobee, might consider going to a place called Ave Maria. A Catholic community that is just West of Rt 29 south of Immokalee (yea, it is a LONG way south!) but you asked about other "targets" and this one is worth visiting. Great place to stop, although I don't think they have beer, Try one of the smoothies at one of the places. If there is a Disneyland for Catholics, this is it, and they don't mind motorcycles. Really it is more interesting than you might think. Ride safe, or like the British MGB owners say: "Safety - FAST!"

Another Center Stand Question
dynodon replied to elmicko's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I never put the bike ON or OFF the center stand while on the bike. NOTE: FIRST THING TO CHECK...make sure the side stand is folded up. It can be left down sometimes after you put it on the center stand, and if you leave it down, it can throw the bike right when it comes off the center stand onto the suspension! To get it off the center stand, stand beside it (left side) and grip both grips facing forward, with a couple fingers around the hand brake. Step back a bit so you have some leverage, and push the bike firmly, this may take a couple tries to get it to the point where the center stand just gets over the top and the bike comes down. Apply your hand brake as the bike just comes off the center stand. I feel this is better than putting the bike in gear, because you control how far it rolls, not the gearbox, and if the gearbox accidentally pops our of gear, or isn't in gear fully, if you don't have your fingers on the brake, you can lose it. So rely on your brakes. I also grab a handful of brake when getting on or off the bike, just in case. -
Center Stand
dynodon replied to SC89Venture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Here is how I do it. Good advice to have CLASS system at a reasonable pressure, but no need to have it maxed out. Start on side stand, stand beside the bike, with your right side to the bike. Gripping left hand on left handlebar, right hand on left passenger grab handrail. Right foot on the center stand tab. Pull the bike near straight up, as you push down on the center stand gently with your foot, till you feel both feet of the center stand on the floor, then put a little more weight on your right foot. Then in one motion, pull up hard on the rail as you push down with your foot, attempting to pull the two apart. This motion should let anyone of anywhere normal strength put the bike up. I have gotten to the point where I can almost balance the bike on the center stand so that it goes all the way gently rocking back, I then put weight on my right hand on the grab rail to keep the bike on the back tire so I can gently let the front down. I just don't like that front to go bashing down. But this slow rocking forward sometimes freaks out people watching me, thinking the bike is coming back off the side stand and they start to come towards me thinking I need help. But I let the front down gently and they stop and grin. My "wheelie" with the front is a fun move. Try it. -
That grey plug should be for the AM/FM antenna, that is the type of plug for that antenna. They don't use that type of plug on a CB antenna, it isn't shielded properly. Could that be the AM/FM radio instead of the CB?

Keep 'em coming Bob, we are all living vicariously through your posts till that robin gets up here. I think he is getting closer, supposed to be in the 40's later this week. I did ride to my car meeting Sunday in Peoria, then rode to Metamora to a Gold Wing club meeting (Yea, I join any club that will have me!) following in the past president and his wife while they were DRIVING THEIR CAR! I was the only one to be on a scoot. Went home to watch the US lose the hockey game (bummer, but they played a great game) and JJ win another NASCAR race (Yawn). Then fell asleep during the closing ceremonies of the "games". At least Captain Kirk spiced up things a bit. (If this canoe is rockin', don't be knockin'....eh?) Go through Tarpon Springs and pick us up some sponges will ya? And don't let a manatee try to hitch a ride, I understand they are beer hogs!

Bob, You are a shining example of biker guts my friend. In your honor I will ride my bike again tomorrow to a car guys meeting in Peoria at a race shop. I should look right at home in my leathers next to all those Porsche guys in their sweaters and loafers!

I bought mine here: http://www.mountguys.com/category_s/2146.htm Third one down on the left. Mounts on the bar, lots of options, your 255 will clip right in. Hard wire the power and you are set to go. I built a sun shade from cardboard and double stick taped it on and painted it black. When that goes, I might buy one that is real, but for not, it works.

Bob, Really impressed you made it all the way to Mt. Vernon, you must have twisted the throttle nicely! I forgot to ask you what speed you were comfortable with when we took off and you said for me to take point for that short stretch, so I just set it at 65 and hoped you were OK. Wasn't going to be too long so if it was slow, you could get going again quick! Have a great trip, I do wish I could have just kept going with you, but I am fighting insurance companies and dealerships over getting my car fixed after an accident that wasn't my fault. That was the call I took while we were getting ready to go. My car got crunched, other driver 100% at fault, and the INS co's (both mine...State Farm, and theirs, Economy) make it sound like I am the bad guy for wanting my car to be fixed to a state as close as possible to what it was before. But that will never happen. Anyway, I will be doing battle tomorrow while you get in some two-wheel miles! Safe trip, I enjoyed meeting up with you!

Met up with Bob in El Paso (IL) about 1pm and he was doing well. I brought over some allen wrenches so he could tighten up a cover he though was leaking some oil. Hope it worked. We had lunch at that exotic restaurant, McDonalds, and even had Ronald McDonald (REALLY!, all in costume and everything) stop by and talk about Wisconsin for some time. Ronny has a daughter that will be teaching in Madison soon. Maybe at clown college? hahahahahaha...... I kill me. After I fumbled with my heated glove wires for too long, we took off down I-39 to Bloomington and I peeled off on I-74 West while Bob waved, and zoomed on to I-74 East. He is probably going to get somewhere near Effingham before dark and should have a great day tomorrow, getting progressively warmer. Was in the 20's today, but sunny. Should be mid to upper 30's Friday. A heat wave. This was my first ride in about 2 months, and I LOVED it.! Don Mallinson

I am layering up in anticipation of meeting up soon north of Bloomington. I will report back, will ride with him for a short while then turn back like the chicken that I am!

Balmy 11 degrees this AM up to 17 by 8:30 Almost feel like riding in my shorts! Got the bike ready last night, even shined up the exhaust that was cruddy from the last ride this winter when the roads were wet. Will meet up with Bob at El Paso probably, just north of Bloomington about noon. Will report back how things are going, try to post a picture if I remember to take one, and if I can quit shaking long enough!

Sun came out here too this afternoon, most roads have dried up now, and I might even be able to get out of my driveway with the bike Thursday. Going to check tires/oil etc right now. Still hope to see Scooter on his way through!

Amazing that you didn't feel the bolt at all when riding. I had a similar bolt in a car tire on a '66 Grand Prix a few years ago (classic car, not the car I owned in 1966!) not much smaller than the one you had, and I felt it shake the entire car! Didn't have Ride-On, but left the bolt in till I could get to a place to put a patch on it. Put a proper patch inside and the tire is still on the car today I believe (sold it a few years ago, but see it each year).

Weather update from Central IL. We have snow on the ground, maybe 1/2 to an inch, and more coming down as of 7:30am. My clean driveway is white again. Temps in the teens. I imagine it is somewhat the same up in WI all the way to somewhere south of me.
