  1. Saddlebum's advice is good, but I can add a little more to it. I have stored old cars and have friends that do the same for decades. Unheated concrete will cause sweating when temperature and humidity swings wildly, or even mildly. Use a sheet of plastic (drop cloth, or slightly thicker. Cover as much of the floor as possible, be at least several feet away from the edge of the bike (or car/tractor etc). Then, go to a carpet store and get a bit of old carpet that isn't too bad that they throw away. cover the plastic with the carpet. It helps hold down the plastic, and acts as insulation. I cover my stuff in my garage, and it is fairly well sealed, but there is so much dirt in the air these days that no matter what you do, you will get dust. So When inside, just use an old bedsheet to cover that bike. Will keep dust off, won't harm the paint if the wind can't get to it, and is something you probably already have in the house...the wife needed an excuse to get a new set of sheets anyway....right? This won't prevent your bike from getting fogged over if you pull the bike out into a warm moist day and the bike is cool, but it will keep it from getting any moisture on it from the concrete.
  2. Was getting cabin fever already here in IL, and with the sun shining, and a toasty 36 degrees out, I got the bike out and rode for about an hour. Heated gloves, toe warmers in my boots, extra layer of leather on and my Shark Evoline in full face mode, I was pretty toasty, although I forgot the face/neck wrap that would have kept away a little of a draft. Still was nice to get out, never saw another bike. Any other cold weather riders out there?
  3. been lousy riding weather, but may be nicer on Turkey day or Black Friday. I went out and spent money on Brown Wednesday and bought our first HDTV! Wow, we finally went from the 60's to maybe the 90's for viewing! A little cheap 19" tv for the kitchen to replace one we have had for maybe 15 years. Everyone have a nice Thanksgiving.
  4. My thought would be unless you have pounds worth of it actually stuck away in a safe spot only you can get to, that a few ounces won't do much good, say in case of a really bad melt-down etc. As a way to maybe gain some money like playing the stock market, there are companies that you can invest with, but I somehow will do that with stocks, but not with Gold...not logical I know. If you buy gold coins, Kugerands? or real US gold coins, chances are they will go up in value and may be a bit more useable in case of a disaster? Again though a few will get you through a few days, if you need years worth of security, you need a LOT of them!
  5. I have two pair of Tourmaster gloves, both say they are waterproof, and both ARE waterproof. One pair is long and has insulation for cold weather wear, the other pair is shorter and I use them for summer/warmer weather. In Florida, you should not need heated gloves, but if you really are riding in cold weather, say below 40 degrees for any length of time, consider heated gloves, or heated grips. I have tried a couple types of battery powered gloves or liners, and they do NOT work for me. GEt the type that plug in with a controller. Gerbings is the tops, but there are other good brands. I have these and like them, they are not the cheapest, but aren't the most expensive. http://wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/147_Apparel_Featured_Wingstuff_Apparel/20164_Synergy_Heated_Electric_Motorcycle_Gloves/ Here is a link to the summer waterproof gloves that I like, field tested in heavy rain! http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=284&cat=9 and here is the winter glove that I like, but again, it won't keep you warm in really cold weather, but it should suffice for most anything in Florida except those rare freezing days way up north! http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=107&cat=9 I hope this helps. It pays to buy decent products, but of course there are other brands that are just as good, but I find Tourmaster makes top of the line products that are worth the money.
  6. If the various pop ups and other auto functions are not available, then I would favor separate sections for "for sale items discussion" and "e-bay/Craigslist items discussion" that automatically delete after 30 days. Post on the Watering hole and other sections that these types of topics are not allowed, and should be in their own section. Assign a couple moderators to monitor it, or let all of us browbeat anyone that breaks the rule(with love and restraint of course.....) You won't be able to completely stop this unless you monitor and approve every post, and that just won't be possible! oh, and thanks for all you do.
  7. One story said the police didn't hold the driver that hit the bikes responsible but held the missing Honda driver responsible. I hope they charge the DUI driver also. Even if the other driver caused the accident, the drinking was a factor in what happened next. the other driver should be charged with murder, time five. Four bikers dead, one car passenger, and many seriously injured. Just a family oriented club out for a nice ride in the country. Lead bike said the car was going 90-100 and came from nowhere. As a Road Captain and Tail gunner myself, all I can say is everyone has to watch all the time, and especially the tail and captain have to watch for traffic coming from front and back. No way to tell if there was time to react, but if I had been aware of the car coming, I would have asked for single file right, and slow to let the car by. Not sure it would have helped, and please this is NOT a criticism of the people in charge of that ride. Sometimes there is just not time to react, and what I posed could have made things worse in this instance, just putting forth an idea to be in the head of others for the future.
  8. I agree, good catch, a real diner, doesn't matter how good it is or what it serves, or how many varmints make it home! What is the next target?
  9. oh, oh, oh, I know where there is a chrome style diner within less than 2 hours. Does it count if it is new, but in the old style?
  10. Weeeellll...as mentioned, the giraffe is life size, so it doesn't really count, but the Santa and the ornament are 100% what I had in mind, and we know he was there because of the reflection in the first picture. If I wanted to be a jerk, I could say nay because he wasn't in the other photos, but I will be a hero and say .... GOOD JOB! Set the next target!
  11. OK, we have some nice weather this week in the midwest at least. Let's get the current target and move on! Here is the target again: You, Your bike of course, and a large fake animal or person or thing. The kind used to promote businesses, the huge bull, the large person (like rocketMan outside the Rocket motel in N. Illinois near Joliet...hint, hint, that would be a good one) there is a large fake elephant on I-55 near St. Louis, or I suppose it could be ANY LARGE advertising type thing, like a huge burger or huge loaf of bread etc etc. Just some oversized fake advertising or promotional thing, but not just a big sign, has to be similar to the real thing but big. (big tire as you enter Detroit is another good one, there is a large bottle of Ketchup somewhere in Illinois, the huge ball of string, or big frying pan etc etc. It does NOT have to have advertising on it, and need not be advertising anything specific, just on display. Edit, I won't count things like the Ronald McDonald/hamburgler, or BIG BOY type things, they aren't really BIG. Got to be oversized. Ride, take a picture and GET THIS TARGET!
  12. I use Collinite 915 carnauba, tests as well as anything in every test it is included in. Goes on and comes off as easy as about any wax around. Only one step, vs several with Zaino. Zaino makes a good product but it is more expensive per use and more work per use than anything on the market. As for clay, it is probably the best NEW product for car care in the past 50 years. All top waxes pretty much do the same thing, but clay really works. BUT...and here is what everyone needs to know about clay. Not every car/bike/painted surface needs or will benefit from it. Clay removes things like metal embedded in the paint (rail dust, it is real) or paint overspray (some, it won't remove all overspray, mainly the dry type). If you feel your paint finish and it feels even a tiny bit like sandpaper....THAT is what clay is for, removing that roughness. If your paint is smooth, then forget the clay, you don't need it. As for clay on black cars/bikes, again, if the paint is smooth, you don't need it. Clay CAN and does put in very minor scratches as you use it that is why you must follow clay with a very fine polish or glaze. Nothing totally hides scratches without removing them, otherwise, I would never need to get any new eyeglasses, I would just use my magic "wax" to get rid of the scratches, and I have tried everything and none of them remove the scratches. So be careful about using clay, it works wonders for what it is intended for, that roughness, but if you don't need it it does nothing for the finish. Even for those surfaces with some roughness, after using clay it won't be any shinier, it will just be smoother, you need the glaze or polish to make it shine, and use wax ONLY to protect the paint from acids/wear/oxidation.
  13. Don, some people are just jerks. You may want to prepare a short speech for the nest time along the lines of what you said that "you don't have to lose a leg or arm to be disabled and my injuries and problems are not visible. I forgive you for being an AssHat and jumping to the wrong conclusion". When I had my hip replacements (both over a few months one winter) Dr. gave me a prescription for a handicapped card. I gladly used it when I had to get out while using a walker or cane, but as soon as I was healthy again, I gave it up and didn't look back, feeling lucky to not HAVE to have one, and more than willing to walk the extra steps again. You are to be congratulated for not decking that jerk!
  14. I have stored old cars and such for a year or more at a time and been doing this for decades. Never had anything have any gas problems, carbs have been clean as a whistle (a clean whistle!) every time I opened them. With Fuel injection I don't open them up but no problems. I usually put in some Amsoil gasoline stabilizer when storing something. have had vehicles with gas (ethanol mix) that is 1.5 years old and no problems. Doesn't mean that anyone else will have the same results, but I just don't see Ethanol as a problem fuel. I also use Sea Foam from time to time in the bikes.
  15. With all due respect, NOT the "dont' use abrasives" stuff from Zaino. Zaino makes decent stuff, but the amount of work/cost/value equation just doesn't work for me. I have bought it and tried it. As for abrasives dulling clearcoat? What do you think all....ALL eyeglasses are made with? How about ALL telescopes, microscope lenses and EVERY SHOW CAR paint job? WITH Clearcoat? All of them are finished with abrasives. Very fine abrasives. A fine polish or glaze will bring out the shine in anything, and no, a good wax, carnauba especially will NOT yellow clearcoat. Some "yellow" carnauba waxes might show a tiny bit of the color, but the best carnauba is NOT yellow. A little logic goes a long way when dealing with the myths and wrong info going around in the name of selling wax and other products. Check with the people that paint vehicles for a living, they will confirm, you treat clearcoat the same as any other paint. If you want it to be show car smooth, you have to polish it with abrasives, and it can turn out like a mirror. Most factory finishes are sprayed and baked, and virtually all of them have orange peel, and NO wax will take that out, that is why all true show car finishes are sprayed, and sanded and buffed.
  16. I now have a thousand or more miles on my 04 Wing since installing the beads. I left on the wheel balance weights. Tires now have 6000 miles on them, and I can't say for sure that the beads are making the bike ride smoother, but it for sure isn't riding any worse. When I change the tires I will inspect to see the condition of the tire inside. I don't believe the beads will tear up the inside of the tire or create any "dust" but I will know for sure when I change the tires. So far zero problems with the valve stems. For a few bucks it was worth experimenting with.
  17. Something is broken on one of the parts, the listing says this: Major Flaws other than normal wear: BROKEN MOUNT AS SHOWN
  18. Just as a note, there really isn't any such thing as clear coat wax. Oh, manufacturers label it as such, but paint is paint. Clearcoat is nothing more than paint without pigment. You care for it the same way you would any paint. Any product that is good for regular paint will work fine with clearcoat. so called "clearcoat safe" products are a creation of the wax industry to sell you a new shelf full of products when clearcoat paints started becoming popular in the 80's. With any paint finish you want to stay away from aggressive "cleaners" and use NOTHING that has the word "compound" on it. If your paint is in good shape, stay way from anything that says it removes serious haze or swirl marks. Some products that will remove swirl and haze are OK to use, but use them on finishes that actually have some of that damage. If your paint looks perfect after washing, you want to use a pure wax with ZERO abrasive. I prefer a carnauba wax, but some of the newer polymer waxes are also OK.
  19. It's working...no crows around that bike! Very cool, thanks for posting!
  20. It's the cord that goes from inside the fairing to the side of the tank (fake tank cover) and that you plug your helmet/headset cord into. Just the one for the rider, no the passenger. After posting I did notice it isn't available from Yamaha anymore. So I guess I am going to have to get one from a parts bike.
  21. The factory headset cable (the one that clips to the side of the "tank cover" on my '86 VR, appears to have a short in it. The right channel comes and goes and is getting worse. Has anyone replaced this cable and what is involved? I am guessing that it might be available from Yamaha, but anyone have a known good one they want to part with? Thanks
  22. I forgot to mention and warn that ME in the mirror (twice counting the convex mirror) is probably scarier than the house! But OK, thanks for accepting my entry.... here is the next target: You, Your bike of course, and a large fake animal or person or thing. This should be fairly easy to get, so go forth and look for those huge things! LOL
  23. OK, for your viewing amusement and your approval, is a nice old house up the road from me with a lot of SCARY stuff for halloween. One of the pics has me in the mirror. If this is OK then I will set a new target. (edit) it is a lot scarier in person and at night) LOL
  24. would a scary looking house do? Not a true Haunted house that you pay to go through, but one decorated? Really windy here now, but sunny, could get a picture of that one in the next day probably.
  25. our 2003 Silverado pickup has the Cassette option. We got the Bose specifically to get the cassette because my wife drives the pickup the most, and she likes some of her cassettes. But the BOSE system in that truck is the best I have ever had before or since in a vehicle. It ROCKS. and has deep bass that will reproduce concert or jazz bass fiddle (upright double bass) still once in a while when someone gets in the truck, they comment on the cassette player! LOL
