Was good to see car companies being fun again. My favorite was the Chevy truck ad with the truck being Lassie. Funnnnneeeee! Second was the VW darth Vader commercial. Well done. The Chevy ad worked better from the standpoint of selling the product, the truck was in most shots, and did heroic things, and there was NO WAY you could miss who the ad was for, or easily forget it. The VW ad was less effective in that the car wasn't featured till the very end, so you have most of the commercial thinking about buying a STAR Wars movie, and if you miss the VW badge on the car, you can forget entirely who the ad is for. still I love it from a storytelling standpoint, just not from an advertising standpoint. Like the Herding cats commercial a few years ago. Who remembers who that was for? Great writing, idea etc, but BAD for the advertiser, no brand identity. Most super bowl commercials fail on the brand identity level. That is why the Chevy truck as Lassie was so great. Yes, I created and sold advertising for most of my working career.

Still snow bound. 14+" of snow this week, not the worst in the country, but bad enough. Getting another couple inches now, just to add to the insult. At least I can have a couple fake beers (O-Douls, yea, I know but I quit drinking beer, and after a while, even this junk tastes good!) and some snacks while watching....who is playing again?

So still looking for a Q? OK. I agree, no DQ, too easy. (although I tried to do that and my camera phone ran out of battery!) LOL We haven't had a snow/salt/ice free day/roads here since New Years day, and now, like people in a BUNCH of states, we have 15+ inches forcast for the next 48-73 hours, so instead of riding my bike, I will be riding my diesel John Deere tractor clearing the drive! Go away SNOW, I have a Q to get!
-
I had not used one till my wife's '98 Shadow Ace Tour came with it. I love riding her bike, but the advantage is slight for me, and not worth the money to change out my '86 VR if I could find one, or to add the floorboards and shifter etc to my '05 GoldWing. I rented an Ultra Harley last January, and loved the floorboards and heel/toe shifter. Try it and see if you like it. Should only take a few rides of forcing yourself to use it to get totally used to it. You can always ignore it or cut off the back section if a toe shifter replacement isn't available. Give it a try, variety is sometimes good!

My cousin was a Signalman on the Sara and other ships later. He was a plank owner on the Sara. (I was really young at the time and asked if he got to take the "plank" with him when he retired! He made Master Chief before retiring. He always said being Chief was the best job in the Navy, still had the respect of enlisted men and could get even the Captain to listen! I lost him to heart surgery he didn't make it out of a few years ago, I never had a brother, but he was real close. Name was Jordan, maybe you met him? I want to go to a Saratoga Signalman convention if they have another one, I have touched base with several who knew him.
-
Way to step up Joe and IH, we may approve big rigs soon! Joe, did you serve on a ship (thanks for your service BTW) ? I had a cousin in the Navy, served many tours on the Saratoga. Saratoga Society just lost out on being able to get it donated as a tourism site, and it will be cut up. They are going in with another group on another carrier. Sad that we are loosing these icons of the cold war so rapidly.

When the base of my '86 VR became almost three separate pieces, and JB weld did no good, I went to this stuff that a friend of mine told me about. Took a couple hours over two days and a borrowed small grinder, but the result is holding several months later. Pretty cheap too. http://www.urethanesupply.com/plastifixhowto.php

(knock knock~!) BOB, hey BOB wake up man! You got the DQ, so need to set a new target. I am going to FL for a ride in a few weeks, so will need a target to look for while down there.
-
Rick, Wonderful news. Will keep fingers crossed that this latest advancement holds. I have enjoyed riding with you from time to time, and look forward to more trips soon. Take care of yourself. Again....great news.

Played first chair Jr and Sr years in High School (Arthur, IL) where we had a state champion band every year for many many years. I have to admit, while I could play good, I never learned the scales well, could not triple tongue well, and could not improvise. Although I never did work very hard on those skills. Play in SIU Marching Saluki's in college and played in several of the bands there, including one year in the 2nd stage band. Played Mellophone in marching band (Stan Kenton invented it, basically a straightened out french horn that plays like a trumpet in Eflat.). Since college other than the occasional homecoming with the marching Saluki's I haven't played. Sold my good Holton trumpet but bought a student model trumpet a few years ago, it plays horrible...or maybe that is me? As for this gal, she has a great tone, and control, but seems like she is on downers all the time, no emotion. A disconnect kind of between her playing and her outer emotions. I appreciate the posting of the Libertango, at least I got to hear her bust loose a little. my favorite trumpet players are in order: Doc Severenson, Al Hirt, Wynton Marsallis, and anyone that played for Stan Kenton!

CB is really the best most universal way to communicate, and even if just the two of you, you can use it for so much more and most clubs/groups have it, so it makes sense. Also, although you can use any CB, and even a hand-held unit, the J&M unit makes it so much SAFER to use the CB. It is expensive, but can be taken from bike to bike, and is worth most of its value used. You may be even able to save some by buying used. We have several of them in the various clubs that I ride with and my wife has one on her bike. I highly recommend it. Comes with a weather radio and can play music. Again, much safer than other alternatives if you don't have CB built into the bike.

A volt meter is NO test of a battery. You need to put it to a load to see if there is a bad cell, there are other tests. Go to a good battery business. I trust my local Interstate Battery distributor (happens to have his shop in my home town). They will test for free, and are probably honest, but that isn't guaranteed. I trust my distributor (he sells to all the retail businesses in the area, but also sells over the counter). Are you getting any acid build-up on the terminals? A battery with a bad or weak cell could still start your vehicle in most instances for some time, but it will also charge all the time, and discharge all the time, so it will collect battery acid. Battery acid is a tell-tale that either the battery or charging system has a problem. Properly working systems with a healthy battery won't get any acid. Also, keep all batteries that aren't used almost daily on a Battery Tender (brand, but there are other good ones) all the time. It will extend life of any battery greatly.

battery tender hook up
dynodon replied to Sandbagger's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have about 10 of these at my place (all Battery Tender brand) between the mowers, tractor, motorcycles and various other things with batteries. ALL are hooked directly to both battery terminals. NOTE: if you get battery acid, you have a problem, either a bad battery, or a charging system that overcharges. Most of the time it is a bad battery that can still start and run things for a while, but will overcharge and gas out causing the acid. So just cleaning things up won't help. I used to buy 2-3 new batteries a year before I started using the Battery Tenders on everything, now I buy maybe one battery every two years! These things WORK. -
Hey Hey HEY! That is MY money, the guy promised it to me! Get your sticky fingers off my cash man! LOL I DID retire, took my $1.98 per month at 62 and am living it up!

Aren't "red light cameras" more properly called "yellow Light cameras?" even if triggered by the car being in the intersection when it turns red, you must pay attention to the yellow! There are some lights, say where speed limits are 55 mph (sorry, Canadians, I am a metric impaired Amurican!) and if it turns yellow just when you are at the go-no go point, you either get into the ABS and risk a rear end collision (or loss of control on wet slick roads) or will probably have part of the car in the intersection when it turns red. Luckily, in my part of the US, near Peoria, IL, we don't have any of these cameras yet. (that I know of). I am NOT in favor of trying to beat the lights, but sometimes, you just get caught at the exact wrong moment. I have noticed that lately, if I go through on the yellow, thinking "that was too close to the red", that there is usually one or two cars SEVERAL car lengths behind me that follow me through! They are for sure going through on almost ALL red. Drive/ride safe out there folks, the life you save may be mine or my kids/grandkids (or yourself!).

I believe it is up to Bob to set a new target since he got the DQ. Nothing that says you can't get your own target, especially if you give others time to find it. It helps move on the fun from time to time. So BOB, set a new target already!
-
Bob, I tried. I actually wanted to go get something local with a "Q" that was more unusual like: Qdoba Mexican Grill, several "Quality" businesses! Quicksilver mailing or Quarter Construction! But Noooooo You had to go and get a DQ before I could get my camera charged! LOL OK, set a new target, like a sign with an A in it. I know where there are several AA Air conditioning companies! Not been the best riding conditions lately, and we have a bunch of snow on the way for Tuesday. So I won't be out for a while. All you warm weather riders...where you at? go get involved with the greatest game ever invented for a motorcycle nut, a good excuse to ride~!

I'll keep my Shark Evoline. convertible from 3/4 to full without even stopping the bike. Yea, the MFGR says not to do that, but once you know how, and practice some on the bike just sitting, you can do it with one hand easily. No need to "store" anything. With the G-Max, you get caught in a sudden rainstorm, you have to stop, find the chin bar and put it on, then get back on the bike. I just flip the bar over and pull down the visor.! Best and most versatile helmet I have ever had. Don't ride without it.

They had a problem with some of them folding in the process of printing, making them useless. One story said it could take years to weed out all the bad ones as there was no automated way to do it, just have to go through the sheets one at a time, and there were millions of them! Wonder how many will slip through and be worth scads in the future?
-
Well I was at my target, lined up the camera phone and ......the battery died! Irony of Ironies. I finally remember to find a business with Q in it (Dairy Queen) and can't take a picture. So if it doesn't snow to much in the next day or so (in forecast, but not supposed to be much, I will try again. Did get in a nice 65 mile ride at highway speeds, trying out my new winter boots (warmer, but still need toe warmers) and a new scarf my wife gave me for my neck (toasty, but could not turn my head much!). Was out about 1.5 hours. Felt great.
-
hope your daughter is OK! Going "Q" hunting today!

Who would have thought that the Illini would be in with Iowa and Ohio State trying to save the Big Tens (eleven/twelve) reputation. Congrats to Ohio ST. they played a great game, but Arkansas also kind of beat themselves. Dropped passes and penalties galore. Still, it took the pressure of that great Ohio St. defense to cause many of those stumbles. Great game, Arkansas has nothing to hang its head over. I just wish the BCS would give non BSC teams a chance. Would love to have seen Boise St. or TCU in the big one. We need a real playoff, to get a real champion.

As much as I like spending money on my bikes, the handlebar shake on my '86 VR was stopped cold for the sum of ZERO bucks by just tightening the steering head nut about one flat or less. Just stuck a screwdriver in and whacked it with a hammer a couple times. On my '04 GoldWing, it has a wobble side to side and I made it a little better by loosening the "all Balls" bearings on the steering head, till I started to get handlebar shake at low speeds. Tried the new Kuryakyn Fork brace and Dyna Beads and they had ZERO effect on either problem. So don't rely on those things to solve the wobble, try properly adjusting the bearing tension. Usually for handlebar shake, tighten a tiny bit at a time till it goes away.

Not sure I can make it, there is a really interesting TV show on about the life and times of the person that invented the cap for the valve stem. Wow:rasberry: Seriously, I will try to log on, but you know how unreliable I am!

At the moment I think that weekend is free, and since I live only 5 miles? away, I should be able to make it!
