pretty sure he was just showing a picture of a caboose! there are a couple in personal yards in my area. I know where there is a steam train, our STAR group had our monthly meeting across from it last week. I may be able to get there later this week, it may have a caboose too.

56 or 57 I am pretty sure, a good catch for sure...what is the next target?

For me it depends a lot on the area and situation. If there are dozens/hundreds of other more expensive and tricked out bikes around, then I don't worry so much. If I am the only bike in a Wal Mart parking lot, I tend to be more careful. A short stop where I don't loose sight of my bike means I will leave more stuff on it like the helmet/jacket/GPS etc. IF I am walking away and out of sight for a longer time, I will lock up. With my Wing, I can lock most stuff with the push of a button, on the Venture, I use the key most of the time because it is good practice to keep those latches locked so you don't lose a lid! my Sat radio is nylon tied to the bike for safety and security, so I don't remove it. I will lock my helmet to the helmet locks if there isn't room in the trunk/bags. Generally if I am in a group of bikes and everyone else leaves their stuff, so will I, there is some safety in numbers, and I usually don't have the newest/most expensive stuff!

Be careful with the waterproofing! If you overdo it, your tent won't breathe any and you will wind up with rain from the inside from humidity and your breath! Ask me how I know! Set it up, and hose it down, if it doesn't leak, then it probably doesn't need any waterproofing. if it does, follow the directions and resist the temptation to put on too much.

I have run national conventions for a car club I run for over a decade, and always confirm on PAPER that contract for any rooms. It is always with the written agreement that the rooms will be released without penalty after a certain date. Now I am dealing with 50-60 rooms and hotels want this always on paper, and I always check with them to see how it is going, and make sure the rooms are released on the agreed date. they also always say my people can get the same rate AFTER the release date IF rooms are available. For smaller functions, and I have done a few of them, usually smaller hotels don't worry about contracts, and they say that they will release rooms after a certain date, if only a few rooms, many places will hold till 6pm or so the first night! but I always call to make sure the rooms are released. In your case, I doubt if a call would have done it, seems like this is one of many poorly run hotels/motels that rip off people all the time. You had an agreement, but if not on paper (have them FAX a confirmation, I won't trust e-mails) it is your word against his. Your ace is that you have a bank that knows what this guy is doing. I once had 60 rooms at French Lick in Indiana with the same agreement on paper that rooms would be released at a certain date, and that all rooms were paid for by the people staying there, and NOT paid by me, the organizer. I got there, checked in and later that day a couple of people thanked me for paying for their rooms! BIG ONE heart attack! I got my contract and went to the desk. Desk monkey said I agreed to pay for all the rooms, I showed her the contract and said NO way, she asked to see the contract and I said NO WAY, it stays in my possession. Then the person in charge of group sales arrived and settled things, saying I was right. Have to say it took a while to get my heart rate down!

Don't forget one of the most overlooked options on the Wing. The Wave Back button. This proves that Wing owners are not stuck up and that we do wave at other riders, just push the Wave Back button and the bikes takes care of everything! (says WB on it!). also for some reason I get some weather reports but that is just a bonus! You may miss a few MPG that you got on the Venture.

I have heard that in general motorcycles use Channel 1. Star touring tends to use channel 2 and the local Wing group uses Channel 8. I would make a mental note of the channels I and others have mentioned, and try them if you see a large group going by. Otherwise, stay on channel 19 to hear the truckers, keep up with traffic and police. You may get tired of all the junk after a while, but for the most part, 19 is still where you want to be to keep informed on the road. Remember to play with your Squelch from time to time. you want it set so that the constant white noise just goes away and then maybe a bit more. For maximum range (hearing, Squelch has nothing to do with output) leave the noise on all the time, but again, you won't want to do that for long. Typical range is 2-3 miles at the most for a stock CB, Yea, in some conditions it might be more, but motorcycles have a poor ground plane, so they don't get out very far, expect a mile or two max to get to someone, and you might hear others for 2 to 3 miles. Then there are the "skip' people, they usually whistle into the mic, and use very high power units to talk sometimes to other countries, mostly on clear days. You won't be able to talk to them, and they can be quite annoying. CB can be entertaining, but try to stay out of any fights. Sometimes people on CB that get angry will go looking for you, so if someone is being a jerk, be sure to NOT identify yourself (I am on the Yellow WING) will put a target on your back sometimes. Other times if people are nice, and you get along, you can tell them who you are and have a nice talk. IF you do get chatty, consider going off 19 to another channel, finish the conversation and then go back to 19. Also, be courteous to others and don't hog the channel. (you will run into others that are NOT following this rule, my fav is the jerk that likes his music and keys his mic so you can enjoy his favorite song...over and over. :stickpoke:Or the guy (usually a guy) that just talks and never quits. Hope they are going the other direction and will be out of range in a few minutes! Don't be put off by the above, I love CB and use it a lot, but if it gets to you, shut it down and listen to your thoughts or music.

305 Chev - Boat I/O - I could use some help.
dynodon replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
Been a long time since I had a boat, and they weren't that big or powerful, but don't all boats get their cooling from the water they are in? You mentioned radiator, does this use a radiator instead of any outside water? Thought I/O used water for the engine or exhaust manifolds or something, and wonder if the water pump is working right? Does engine temp ever rise at any time when this is happening? Just for the heck of it, I assume this has hydraulic lifters, is is possible they are pumping up or are adjusted too tight and when hot they cause the valves to never close properly? But then it should run again when it cools down. Same for junk in the fuel system getting on the intake tube/sock. When it shuts off, it should start back up again after a while when the stuff falls back off. I think you need a gas cap overhaul. Remove the gas cap and drive a new boat underneath it (then it will turn out the problem was in the cap! Sorry. Hope you get the problem solved. I traded my last boat (gave me many troubles) to a guy with a motorcycle...I was a much happier man! -
Very nice, love that it still has a 6. Those are great engines, known as "stovebolt" engines for the bolts that hold on the side covers I believe. Do you know what year the engine is? The valve cover doesn't look right for the year, maybe a newer 6? Could be original though. Love the 5-speed OD tranny mod, that makes it very driveable over longer distances, and should get you decent mileage. Plus it should be a bunch of fun to drive.

Hey Rick, I live 5 miles away and have a bike with the same driveline! One suggestion. When giving an engine a lot of throttle in a high gear, even at speed, you are putting it under more stress then in lower gears. This will let problems show up that might no happen, like an ignition problem. I know I had a bad spark plug wire on a Chevy V8 once, and it would only show up when towing something and in high gear. Might want to spray the engine with water vapor (from a spray bottle) while hot and idling in the dark. Stray electricity that is leaking would be visible. Under conditions mentioned, the air/fuel mixture is harder to ignite than at higher rpm/lighter load. So a slight leak at low speeds might be a misfire at high loads? Just a suggestion.

The room needed for throttle body FI is the same or LESS than for carbs. Don't see how there wouldn't be plenty of room for the upgrade. Even rail port FI doesn't take up that much room, and once you remove the carbs, there is a bunch of room between those cyl banks. Best move Yamaha could make would be to seriously upgrade the bike with the V4.

A+ for being inventive if just a touch annoyingly literal! Set a new target is my vote!

I don't see where I have a chance to get the current target, no action for a while...time to reset it?

I was a Wayne Newton fan because he was an all around musician at one time. But we saw him a few years ago and his voice is shot. The band was good though. But unless you are a super fan, don't waste your money on him. Best show we saw? Cirque for sure, we saw the regular one, not the nudie. There were only the two when we went, I think there are more now. We also saw Blue Man Group, but it wasn't half the entertainment that Cirque was. Check the schedule for the days you will be there, and you are bound to find someone you want to see again or for the first time. Look around for ticket deals. Last time we went the wife and I renewed our vows at the Little White Wedding Chapel. THAT was a great thing to do. Rent a float boat and go out on Lake Mead for a few hours!

Tie down 2nd Gen on Trailer?
dynodon replied to jryan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
When I tie anything down I tend to overdo it! I use a front chock I got from Harbor Freight, like the Condor but do NOT rely on it...read on for why For a bike, I use two straps on the forks, above the lower tree. Two on the crash bars on the front and two on the crash bars on the back, If I can get to the frame on the sides, I put on on each side as high as possible or on the passenger grab rails. NOTE: the grab rails and some of the side bars are not intended to get the loads that a huge tie-down will give, but by using several, you spread the load and I have never had a problem. Then I do one other important thing. I use a 2" strap around the rear wheel/tire, through the rim (be careful not to get it on the air valve!) and tie back in a V to the rear. Why? Because the back of the bike can move around a lot on big bumps. I had a front strap work loose recently, but the rear strap on the wheel kept the bike from going sideways on me, I noticed it leaning a little, and stopped. Those rear straps helped. also, don't depend on a Condor type chock to hold the bike up, especially if the trailer is tilted on a grade! I was unloading my Wing, and the last strap was holding the bike more than I realized! When I popped it the bike went to fall over and I grabbed the first thing I could get which was the mirror! It held, and I was able to get the strap tight again with one hand. Had to get help to let me sit on the bike while that strap was removed. You can never use too many straps, they are nice insurance. Seen too many bikes held on with just four straps go over. -
It is what its current owner wanted it to be. Not by any means what I would want my bike to look like, but my name isn't on the title now. Interesting to look at though.

yes, this target will be tough to get. Don't know of many school mascots running around outside where cars/bikes park/drive, especially at this time of year. And High Schools are about to let out for the year. Plus, High School? I know that in the current atmosphere if any old farts like us go asking a high school kid to hop on our bike, we are likely to get on some offender register! I'll wait for the next target!

RSV much worse in crosswinds than 1st Gen?
dynodon replied to Grisolm1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My '86 VR handles cross winds great. I haven't spent a lot of time on a 2nd Gen (don't own one) but I expect the handlebar mounted fairing would have to give more input from wind. the '04 Gold Wing I also have though, is MUCH worse in any cross winds than the VR. Winds push it all over the place and it seems to tip from the top much worse than the VR. Both bikes have gas tanks under the seat, and the wing even has more weight down low, so it shouldn't be that way, but if it is windy, I get out the VR. -
Just curious, How many Wing Riders do we have on the site?
dynodon replied to Midrsv's topic in Honda Goldwing Tech Talk
Have an '04 Wing, but still have my '86 VR. The wing has been in for a suspension rebuild this week, and I am getting re-acquainted with the trusty VR. It LIKES being ridden more, so I will put a few more miles on it this week before picking up the remodeled Wing. I wish my VR had the power of the Wing, but I wish the Wing was more like the VR in every other way. -
Dan, how heartless and cruel of you....."Happy Hunting" for the Easter Bunny. And there is even a cute movie out now. Think of the children Dan! They will be devastated as VentureRiders bring in millions...er thousands....uh, dozens....OK, TWO of the little bunnies possibly with feet missing as good luck charms for Bob! On the other hand, if I am allowed, I would put a few holes in those dreaded lawn blow-ups...wonder if the family that allowed me to get the Christmas picture last year will have some Easter stuff. Oh well, have to go now....have some bunny stew to make!

Interesting they went with two valve heads. guess since they were doing the engine N/S, that they couldn't live with 4 valve DOHC heads, they would be a LOT wider. engine looks a lot like the V4 in bobcats! LOL Also, nice that they got very high compression and still only need 87 octane regular. Direct injection helps a lot there. Not enough bags and windshield for me!

Trip planning - Madison, WI to South Dakota - What to see?
dynodon replied to petekadish's topic in Watering Hole
Pete, while in the WI area, you should try to get to Galena IL, very nice roads and a great tourist destination with some interesting shopping and history. In S. Dakota, you would want to take in Spearfish Canyon, in the town of the same name. the Mt. Rushmore memorial is a must do of course but be sure to ride the pigtail bridges in the area. Lots to see out there. Have a great trip. -
Sorry Joe, I just can't seem to find the bike in the pictures! But I accept that it is there, and look forward to finding a beach!
-
joe, good picture there. I almost called foul because the red SUV doesn't look like a bike, but hey, there it is somewhere near those girls. Tough to find it, my gaze kept going elsewhere (and not to you!) A Beach? Darn, and I was so close to Daytona at the first of last month!

Welcome back Bob! Glad you made it home safe. Now you will pay for shipping your lovely wife a box of dirty clothes instead of a thoughtful gift.
