  1. I ride often down to about 30, short rides in the 20's. I find chaps help with air infiltration up the legs, but starting from the bottom up, this is what works for me. Good tall boots, with toe warmers in them, carry extra's for long trips, but these work for 3-4 hours or more. Good socks also. heavy jeans, with heavy leather chaps, my legs don't get cold, I ride a royale or my wing and both have good lower protection. I have foot wings on both bikes, and they help. layer the core of my body with a long-sleeve T-shirt, and sweater. with a good jacket with liner. My body doesn't get that cold, so i don't have electric vest. I have tourmaster heated gloves, and they work great, but the wing also has heated grips, my first bike with these, and they really work to keep my hands warm. I tried battery gloves and they just didn't work for me. I use a face scarf that goes down the front of the neck and behind. and then a full face helmet. I have ridden in low 30's for several hours and not felt cold. As others say, respect the cold, if you start feeling cold stop before you start shivering, and get warm again. Get inside. I enjoy my winter rides. Have done a new years day ride the last 5 years or so as long as the roads are clear.
  2. Don't be too quiick to change the target, I know where the is one, can get it later this week. if someone else doesn't get it first.
  3. BAttery Tender is a name brand, and is a "smart" charger that will determine a batteries level and charge it to proper levels and then go into a float mode and if the battery falls below a certain level it will bring it back up again. I have used them for decades and they are the original and I think still the best. These are NOT intended to bring a dead battery back from zero. They are not good for batteries that are on their last breath. they keep a good battery in good shape. I have a 2-10-50 charger for heavy duty use, but for just keeping a good battery healthy and ready, the Battery Tender brand is good, and I just buy the "Jr." version which does everything you will need for a low price. There are other good ones out there, but I just stick with the original. There are also some junk units that may do more harm than good.
  4. looks good, what is next?
  5. I put the small round convex mirrors on all my bikes, and they really give you a better view, if used right, and not used as a replacement for a head check!
  6. Do you have a meter? Get it running and check that the system is charging. If you just bought it, take the battery out, check for acid level, and charge it and have it tested. It may be OK. A new battery isn't that big a deal though. Nice looking bike for 400 bones? (never heard that word before!).
  7. I got my '86 VR checked and balanced for the first time since owning it (over 5 years) and it wasn't that far off, but the bike runs smoother and has a touch more power because of it! Thanks Rick and Mike for doing the work, I held the tools/light and provided the garage, a very good deal for me! I really appreciated your help.
  8. Been a Star Touring member about 7 years now, Chapter 482, River Cities, IL (Peoria/Bloomington/Peking etc) we have members from all over the middle of IL. Find the chapter(s) in your area and attend meetings to see if you fit in with the group. I like STAR because they believe in riding sober (no drinking till the days riding is done) and a family oriented. I am also a member of GWRRA, and ride with several other groups from time to time.

    Trailer

I have a Bushtec that came with the Wing I bought a couple years ago. Love the Bushtec trailer, expensive but they hold their value well, and nothing trails behind the bike better. This particular trailer is the one (Roadstar) that is made for a Harley, but the previous owner of my bike for some reason wanted that instead of the one that matches the Wing. I like it anyway!
  10. I would like to get an Electra Glide Ultra someday soon, but not yet.
  11. I can see that it says Octoberfest (or some spelling of it, I didn't look that close) so I say you got it! What say the rest of you? New target?
  12. Put bias ply E3's on my '86 royale and they are great. Wearing even, no cupping or feathering in several thousand miles. Put new radial E3's on my 04 Wing and they started feathering and cupping almost immediately (I check air in my tires quite frequently). Not sure if it is the bike or the switch from bias to radial that made the difference, but almost everyone has problems with low miles and bad cupping/feathering on the Wing. The price you pay for all that torque I guess. The Wing isn't THAT much heavier than the Royale.
  13. It is a myth that placing a battery on concrete will drain it. FYI As for cold, if the battery is on a maintainer, (I like Battery Tender Jr's brand) then you don't need to worry about it freezing as long as the battery is healthy to start with. Think about the cars that are daily driven that sit out in 20 below or worse and work just fine (again, as long as they are healthy) and they don't have the maintainer on them. Seriously, there is no problem with cold storage of a battery on a decent maintainer. Only if you let the battery drain to near dead will it freeze and bust or other problems. I have three different tractors that get driven maybe once a month in the winter and they are in a cold barn. On maintainers. Never had a battery go bad or freeze or refuse to start the tractor as long as the battery was healthy.
  14. In nearly 35 years of messing around with old cars, some of which have been stored inside for a year or more between uses, I have never had a mouse get in the tailpipe. I have not had a mouse get in an intake airbox, but I have confirmed it with others that let their cars sit outside a lot. You can put something in the pipe, but be sure to take it out before trying to start it. (edit) if you will ride the bike every once in a while, then really, no special work is necessary. I ride my bikes during the winter when possible, and as long as I keep them on a maintainer, and keep the gas full, I just stick to my normal maint. schedule. But if you store it longer, here are some tips, some you are already doing: Use the center stand if you have one, to keep the oil level in the engine, and keep weight off the tires. Although, I never raise my old cars, and the "flat spot" on their tires (again some have sat for a year or more on concrete) comes out in a few miles of driving in warm weather. Never ever had a tire ruined. If concerned about that, there at things you can buy for real money (meaning serious bucks for something you don't need) that let the tires sit in a curved surface. Again, not necessary. If you are storing it for 4-5 months or less, then put some fuel stabilizer, I like the one from Amsoil better than Sta-Bil, but no matter what you get, follow the directions...more is NOT better. Keep the gas tank full, less air means less of a chance for rust/condensation. Fresh oil right before you store it. Fresh clutch/brake fluid is highly recommended, along with fresh anti-freeze if that hasn't been done in the last year or two. do NOT start the bike (or same goes for a car) every few days/weeks/months to stir things up unless you get it out and drive/ride it for at least half an hour. Otherwise, just starting it for a few minutes will allow condensation to get in the exhaust pipes (rust) and in the engine crankcase (rust, etc). Just let it sit is better on it. If you can put out mouse poisen/bait, a LOT of it and that should take care of the critters. Battery tender on the battery, or take the battery out and store it inside a warm space and put it on a maintainer every week or so.
  15. Badda Bing, Badda Boom! Nice one! Two in two days! Yes, Steve, that does the trick, unless anyone else objects, name the next target!
  16. Yea, that would work.
  17. OK, how about you, your bike and something to do with space travel, rockets, science fiction space events/travel. The "rocket Motel" but it has to have some image that looks like space, rockets, flying saucers, other planets (even the moon, but a planet with rings is worth extra points!) etc. Lots to work with here. Go out and travel to the stars! (Just a stylized star * won't do though!).
  18. Here is an old retired or tired grain elevator in Allentown, IL near Mackinaw. A friend of ours used to own this, wanted to restore it and turn it into a residence, but the economy downturn foiled that plan. Probably will be torn down very soon. Nice ride though, about 20 miles mid-70's sunny and little wind. If approved, and in time, I will set a new target. Looks like only one pic will thumbnail, so the other one has me in the mirror.
  19. Yes, nice pic on the sport store. Grain elevator, I know the one I want to get a pic of, just have to get there!
  20. Wow a poser that doesn't ride giving a real rider a "lesson" in what to ride.
  21. Joe, Thanks for your past and current service! What is the next target?
  22. Excellent victory for a retired Navy Chief! What duty did you have in the Navy? I had a cousin that retired as a Master Chief Signalman, he did many tours on the Saratoga. Was in instructor in Chicago for a while too.
  23. You can see the reflection of the bikers heads in the windows, and I don't see any evidence of doctoring, Couldn't find anything about it on Snopes. Still the biker was hugging the center line. When approaching a blind left turn (for us Right hand drivers, right turn for this biker) I try to stay away from the center line. This guy was a typical sport biker that is pushing the speeds and riding on public roads like should be reserved for track days. I have almost been hit by bikes crossing the center line more times than cars!
  24. I'm on both sites, this one is more active, I have been on some rides with both groups, and there are a LOT of people that are on both. They seem to live and let live. No need to wake up that ugly dog!
  25. Wow Rick, Mike in Pekin called to tell me about this. Really glad you are OK and that Mike Eusa1 was there to help you. No more 5 hour energy for you, grabbing the brakes too hard !
