  1. One of the things a like most about the biker community is how passionate we are about riding. We always need to be mindful that passionate = emotional (at least when it comes to all things bike related). You'd never make a negative comment about someone's life partner's appearance just because he/she didn't suit your tastes. It can sorta be like that about a person's bike choice. I am mindful of this and tread lightly. When communicating, either sending a message or receiving a message, it takes work to be mindful of how our thousand year old lizard part of the brain may mess with rational part of the brain. As online social media sites go, I've never run into a group that seems to innately practice this mindfulness more than the "varmints" on this site do. As an aside, I was on this site years ago when I bought a used 2002 2nd gen, but faded away for no reason. Remembered how helpful it was this spring when I was looking to replace my 2012 2nd gen. Couldn't remember my old user id or email address I used back then, so created this brand new account. Overall vibe of the group is as positive now as it was back then. Good on y'all! 6. Arriving by land or water you must present one of the following: Valid Passport – The passport of a Canadian citizen must be valid through the intended duration of their stay in the U.S. (As of January 2016). Citizens of other countries are typically required to present passports that are good for up to 6 months after your intended departure date. If your passport is expired you will most likely be sent for a secondary inspection. Your entry into the U.S. will be at the discretion of the border official. United States Passport Card Trusted Traveler Cards – NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST State or Provincial Issued Enhanced Driver’s License or Enhanced Identification Card – EDL / EIC U.S. Military ID with orders. Must be traveling on official orders U.S. citizens may present an unexpired Merchant Marine Document in conjunction with maritime business Native Americans must have a WHTI compliant document. Some tribes have developed an approved “Enhanced Tribal Card” which is similar to an Enhanced Drivers License and is a valid border crossing document. U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents can use their permanent resident card (Form I-551) or other valid evidence of permanent residence status. Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
  7. Being a Canadian currently living\working in the states, i cross that border very frequently. ID options are: - passport - enhanced driver's license in states that have them - green card (what I use, but always have my passport just in case) There is an expedited American passport process that is quick, but costs more. I have an American step son that just used it. Good luck and say hi to Ontario for me Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk

  9. If it was a liquid cooled, shaft drive v4 and everything else being equal slam dunk I would have bought that. As I said before, bottom line is I was looking for a new bike this spring and out of all of the bikes in the market available today the third gen venture is in my opinion the best of the breed. 10. I traded in a 2012 2nd gen for the SVTC. I wanted to upgrade this spring. Out of all the luxury bikes available in the market today, SVTC is the winner. For me, lamenting on what features one may wish was different is a waste of my time. It is what it is. Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
  11. Prior to this SVTC, i rode the hell out of a 2002 and then 2012 2nd gen. Last fall I started seriously researching a replacement with plan to pull the trigger early this year. Made a list of musts: - no damn carburetor! - abs - 500 mile day comfort - heated seat and grips - did I mention no carb? - electronics comparable to modern cars (blue tooth, GPS, etc.) - decent warranty and expectation that I can reliably put high miles on it I spent months reading every review I could find of every manufacturer's entry in the luxury touring space. Kicked a lot of tires, test road everything I could. For me, the SVTC was winner by a huge margin. Nothing else was even close. Perhaps if Yamaha decided to call this bike something else other than Star Venture the conversation might be a little different. Looking at this new bike through the lens of comparison to the 2nd gen you're not going to be looking at it the right way. It's like comparing apples to oranges. I've put a couple of hundred thousand miles on the 2nd gens and a little over 5,000 on this one so far. The SVTC has absolutely nothing in common with the 2nd gen. All they share is the name. This is a brand new bike for Yamaha. I try to look at it as such with no expectations based on the name and my years of riding previous generation Ventures. So far I have no regrets and believe that I've made the right decision. Brand new model with no track record so it will be interesting to see how I feel a year and 30,000 miles from now. 12. Well that was fun. Took the seat off to disconnect the battery. Then reconnected it turned it on and booted up into the updating screen again! WTF! But this time it didn't get to the failed screen, didn't get to the completed screen either. After the updating the screen went blank, rebooted and came up normally in the old software version are 11. 9.08 Think I'll just stay with this version till I can get to the dealer and have them do it. 13. What is your USB stick formatted as? FAT32? Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
  14. Well maybe not exactly a brick. I can still start the bike, lights come on, turn signals, tach, speedometer, Etc all work. So I can still ride and use the bike as long as I don't mind the infotainment Center going through this endless updating failed Loop. Though I imagine if I leave it like this overnight to bring it to the dealer tomorrow the battery will probably be dead in the morning. F-me. Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
  15. So I followed the instructions on the Yamaha website exactly to update software for the infotainment Center. Now it looks like instead of a motorcycle I have a brick. The bike recognized the USB drive, went through the process of validating file, updating, giving percentage complete updates regularly until getting up to 99% and then telling me it failed. On the failed screen there is one big button that says accept. Push that accept button and the infotainment Center reboots and then immediately goes into updating again. Now it's stuck in an endless loop. Went through the updating process only to get to the failed screen five or 10 times. Eventually I realized it's going to do this forever so after while when the accept button came up I tried unplugging the USB thumb drive to see if it would come back up to the old version and then hit accept. Well it went right back into a reboot and Then followed by the updating for a while before saying failed again. So then I tried turning the thing from accessory to off before hitting the accept button. Even in the off position it proceeded to reboot and tell me it was updating for a while going through the percentages until it gets to 99 and fails. Yamaha update web page last step says that it if it finishes successfully a completed message will appear. This implies to me that failure is an option, yet there is no information that I can find on their website or anywhere else that talks about what to do when the failure option occurs. Cannot get out of this endless Loop. Suggestions? Do I now have a $27,000 paperweight? Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk

  18. At least in this case, i don't see it as a concern. I always ride with the map screen displayed - and usually with GPS navigation to route me around traffic. On that screen in top right corner is current speed and speed limit. Because of this I actually never look at the speedometer. The severe weather notification is a huge overlay that can't be missed. Just glancing down to check speed, the message hits you in the face. Unless taking your eyes off the road to check speed is reckless, I see this notification as no different. Thought it was interesting so I pulled over to switch between screens to see what they showed - and took this picture. There is risk of people interacting with the infotainment system in a distracting manner. I'd argue that most (definitely not all) bike riders are acutely aware of the dangers of distraction from the many times everyday idiots in cages try to kill us bikers. As a general rule, I believe motorcycle riders on average are much better drivers due to ingrained heightened sense of situational awareness. Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
  19. Also the weather notifications work well. Received a pop up about incoming severe thunderstorms similar to the way the text messages show up. And that was accurate and timely as well. It also kept that same alert on other screens you can see in the below picture. Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
  20. I read in another thread that Yamahas sales projection is 2500. It is not likely that they will have hit that in the first few months of it being available. So even if they have sold 50% of the bikes they thought they would sell this year that's about 1250 bikes. This means that sightings being rare is expected, at least outside of events that attract lots of bikers to be all in one place. I've had mine for about six weeks now and the only one I've seen on the road is the one I'm riding. I'm up to about five thousand miles so far and have been in Maryland, Virginia West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario. I still get asked about it almost everywhere I go. Some folks are familiar with the bike but most aren't. Crossing the border at Niagara Falls last Friday night took me a few extra minutes because buddy at the border crossing was familiar with the bike and had a lot of questions. 23. I have just over 3k in the 5 weeks I've had mine. I've always used a bike as primary means of transportation as well as recreation. Unless there is snow or ice on the roads, I'm riding. My daily ride to work from Maryland into Washington DC is considered one of the worst commutes in the country. The 3rd gen runs hotter than my 2nd gen. Left leg can get warm in the roll forward 10 feet then stop crap. Jeans help shield the heat, but in dress pants it does sometimes border on being too hot. So far I've never given heat a second thought any time outside of the DC rush hour nightmare. Bottom line, this is hands down the nicest riding machine I've ever experienced. No regrets at all. 24. I had a 2003 volusia, which was the carborated predecessor to the c50. Put about a bazillion miles (many of which was 2up) on that thing and it never let me down. Know others that have the c50t with similar experience. Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
