Yup, transmission and middle gear need oil pressure for lubrication...think if you check the owners maual they warn about even coasting with engine off.

Year to Year Differences
Neil86 replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
-Yes '88 was last year for standard, '87 first year they included cruise on the standard. -I think the safest way is to check part numbers on the online parts places, obviously the plastic numbers wouldn't match due to color, but everything else. -Pretty sure the carb throats are larger on the 1300 (34 mm VS 32mm)...might have some nasty vacuum leaks mixing and matching. -
15 AMP Signal fuse, Keeps blowin
Neil86 replied to Saddle_Bag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
According to my 83 manual (different on 86-93 manual) the signal fuse supplies power to signals, horns, tach, temp gauge , voltmeter, and the CMS. So with fuse pulled or blown, you should have no CMS display. If you're saying with the new sidestand switch the CMS starts and cycles with the signal fuse pulled....I would be looking for a cross connection. Have a look at the wiring in instrument panel (remove windshield, and instrument hood)for any obvious mods. -
15 AMP Signal fuse, Keeps blowin
Neil86 replied to Saddle_Bag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Just so I have this 100% straight in my brain...when you signal fuse is intact...the sidestand switch works......when that fuse is blown...the sidestand switch interlock no longer works...correct? Yamaha changed the wiring abit over the years...is your CMS blank when the fuse blows, and if it isn't....does your sidestand icon show up even tho the interlock doesn't operate? -
15 AMP Signal fuse, Keeps blowin

If it were my bike, I'd make a list of every "add on" accessory that is wired into the bike...and trace each one back to see whats on what circuit. It sure sounds like a cross connection has been made between the sidestand switch circuit and the signal fuse circuit. -
Ummmm....you start at point A..... step 1 moves you A to B..(side1) 25 ft step 2 moves you B to C (side2) 128 ft Step 3 moves you C to D (side3) 15 ft Step 4 moves you D to E (side 4) 18 ft Step 5 moves you E back to A (side 5) 140 ft doesn't it?

not a surveyor, but since you have 5 coordinate steps...I would think it has 5 unique sides.

Poor performance after tip over
Neil86 replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Remove the top cover (covering airbox, battery, fill cap)...should be able to see the valve right up near the filler neck (86)....believe it's housed down under right side cover on the 83.....inline with the vent hose. -

You might check the roll over valve on the gas tank vent.....located just below the neck of the filler. If it has stuck partially closed the fuel pump will have difficulty keeping carbs full under heaver loads. Its there to keep fuel spilling out when the bike is on its side. -
Squeeze.... the problem I believe is the speedometer not registering. The odometer section can fail but the speedometer still work...thats what mine did.....the actual speedometer needle uses magnetic force to operate...there is no mechanical connection between the rotating head and the cone that rotates the needle. Reiny.... If you go the used route...US speedometer will be MPH predominant...if that matters....and earlier ones (83-85)had black faceplate as opposed to a two tone grey.

Reiny...I should have mentioned....you need to rotate the cable C.C.W. as you look at the end of the cable. You will see it bounce a little...say 10 km/hr off bottom. If you rotate C.W., it'll stay against the needle stop.

V7Goose... Keep in mind some jets meter fuel, some air. The 2 others you mentioned are called main air jet and pilot air jet in the 1st gen service manual. The 2nd gen service manual carb section doesn't have a good cutaway diagram as the 1st gen manual. You can see that they are mounted in the air inlet stream of the carbs in the parts diagrams. The 83 parts fiche I looked at had #117.5 main fuel jets.....the 93 had #125 main fuel jets. The 1st gen had common airbox....2nd gen has two intakes...so air flow could be different left vs right requiring different jetting.

Intercom and Radio in helmet
Neil86 replied to Maritimer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Dogman.. the CB radio requires using the push to talk buttons.....don't think the intercom does. -
So it will crank but not fire? Check the red/white at the igniter box harness with key on for 12 V. Check the black/white wire at harness with key on for continuity to ground....should not have continuity...if you do...the tip over switch is grounding out ignitor. Check resistance of pick up coil that signals ignitor to fire.

Reiny... Put bike on mainstand. Unhook cable at hub......spin bottom end of cable while assistant watches speedometer needle...should see it bounce off bottom just by rotating cable by hand. Then observe the sleeve on the front wheel cable drive for rotation as you spin the front tire. Should pinpoint which end is the problem.

have a great trip my friend!

I would be surprised if it would flow thru the pump.....the valves are spring loaded are they not? If they could syphon, you'd have to shut the fuel petcock off on them like a normal tank feed system when engine was off.

Missing Hazard switch?
Neil86 replied to woz111's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Woz... I believe they switched design in 84 to do away with separate hazard flasher unit and use just one flasher for turn signal and hazards.....but heres both 83 and 86 wires at the the hazard switch... 83 with 2 flasher units (turn signal and hazard) Brown/ Yellow; Brown/White; Brown/White; Chocolate; Dark green. (yes 2 brown/white wires) 86 with 1 flasher unit for both Black/Red; Brown/Yellow; Brown, Yellow/Red; Black; Chocolate, Brown/White, Dark green. -
Have a close look at the triple tree area where the "stops" are for the handlebar travel. Common issue after installing passing lights to have a loose wire stray and get cut as the bars are cranked to the stops.
