  1. So my nearly 20 year old bike should have some life left. Never really heard of any Yamahas having real issues as a model. Coming from FJRs and Super Teneres if there was ever an issue it was a faulty cam chain tensioner allowing a jump and a meet and greet between the valve and piston. Not a problem for this bike?
  2. Seen lots of mentions of high mileage Ventures. Other than crashes, what are the typical causes of the catastrophic problems (if any) suffered by other bikes ? My new to me bike has 91k on it.
  3. That is awesome. They let u keep the old one then? Mine is repaired just need to paint.
  4. All put back together and running! Thanks All!
  5. Thanks guys. As an update, it is up and running. It was the rectifier. Not the first time either. Had a chinese one on it with the factory plug cut off. Got the factory plug and a rectifier off a low mileage 09. Rode for 30 minutes, hated it! Made leveling links and rode it more and it is growing on me. Changed the oil, FD fluid, Flushed the rear brakes and they are good to go. Front brakes were just awful. Found a pair of Royal Star 4 piston brakes, lines and 14mm MC. Hoping that all swaps over easily. Going to flush the forks and change the brakes this weekend. Also working for the first time with with abs and acetone to repair a hole in the trunk. After all that, if I'm still digging the bike I will do a valve check, replace plugs and sunc the carbs. Bike is in pretty good mechanical shape for being nearly 20 years old. Paint looks good too, just some pitting on decoritive pieces.
  6. Thanks all. Anyone have a pic of how the wiring goes to the plug? Not sure if the plug will come with directions. The three white AC wires do not have to be in a particular order correct?
  7. Thanks Joe! Ordered, cost me more than the rectifier but it will be done right. Previous repair looks a little fishy.
  8. This is all that I am seeing and it says Honda. I am looking for one that would be oem yamaha. https://www.partsgiant.com/p350806-ricks-motorsports-regulator-rectifier-wiring-harness
  9. Thanks all. No shorts in the stator leads and they all put out voltage. Fingers crossed. I ordered a used oem rectifier but I am still having a hard time sourcing the plug. Can anyone post a link? I didn't see the plug on parts giant. If all else fails I will use some slide on termials with leads and fill it with epoxy or something.
  10. Things on the stator side seem good. But ya maybe the connections on the rectifier side are bad.
  11. Runs fine but the battery isn't charging. Stator tests out good. Looks like it needs a rectifier. Everything else on the bike looks fine. All the electronics work etc.
  12. Just brought home a high mileage 99 RSV. It does not charge the battery. Battery voltage drops once the bike is running. Using my cheap HF meter and this article it looks like the stator is good. Everything checks out even though my readings might be off some all of the reading seem to be off by the same amount. I am getting 85 volts across all three stator leads by while holding the throttle open a bit. With no tach I am not sure exactly what rpm I am at. I am assuming at this point that it is the rectifier. It looks like this rectifier has already been switched out and the stock plugs cut. Now I need to find a quality replacement rectifier that has leads. Any help? Thoughts? I've only owned the bike 6 hours
  13. Ya, I bet it is the same. I basically bought it, just need to pick it up. If it starts and runs I am bringing it home. These bikes don't seem to have many issues. Like most other Yamahas. My fjrs and Tenere were near perfect. Had a love / hate relationship with my bmws. Family medical bills are forcing me to liquidate the newer bikes , but by getting this and adding some sweat equity I can stay on two wheels and try something new. Really hope it works out.
  14. If as described, I am picking up a 99 RSV tomorrow. Some damage to the bodywork and 90,000 miles but the price is right and these bikes always caught my eye. Coming from big dual sports and sport tourers, never owned a cruiser. The floor boards and heel toe shifter will be all new. Plan would be to do some rehab over the winter. Flush all the fluids, valves, lubricate the suspension, flush the forks etc. Seems like a pretty easy bike to work on. Any thoughts? Things to be cautious of?
