Thanks for all the replies. I will talk with my Yamaha dealer about the Moly 60 thing as I think it makes good sense to use it. I plan on pulling a trailer so proper lube is very important in my opinion. It sounds like a little bit of Moly60 goes a long way and will prevent where and tear. I found the link attached below on an Yamaha FJR website that gives good info. I am not sure the RSV rear end is exactly the same but it looks close. http://www.bikes-n-spikes.org/maint/spline/spline.html After looking at this website it raises a few more questions. Do I need to lube the driveshaft splines where they plug into the pumpkin or does the rear gear oil lubricate that part of the shaft splines? Do you have to clean and lube the actual universal joint where the front of the driveshaft plugs in? If so how do you get to it? Once again thanks for the comments. I'm learning. Jim

I have read a few posts on this but still have a few questions. I plan on lubing the rear end in 3 places when I change my rear tire on my 07 RSV. Rear hub drive pins Rear hub splines Rear drive shaft splines (front and back) This is the first time I have done this. The shop manual says to use Lithium soap for rear hub area and Moly for driveshaft. I have read posts about the Honda Moly 60 paste on this site. I mentioned the Moly 60 paste to my dealer who was hesitant to use something with such a high Moly content. I didnt get into a big discussion with him as I want him to stand behind me if there are problems in the future. He has no problem with me doing my own service but seemed to be more comfortable with the lithium soap on rear and normal moly on the driveshaft. Is there a real compelling reason to use Moly 60 or is it more important that you simply grease things to spec? Are the three areas above all that need greasing in the rear end? Any feedback is always appreciated. Thanks Jim

I am 6'6". Before purchasing my 2007 venture I rode the Gold Wing and the Electra Glide as well as the a venture. The Gold wing was very cramped. The venture had the most leg room and seat comfort for me but I wanted to be sure. We rented a HD electra glide for 5 days as it was the closest thing to the venture for leg room etc. I was still sold on the venture after that ride. The only thing I see out there now that looks interesting is the Victory Vision. I am hoping to get an opportunity to try it. Like every other venture owner I to wish it had better safety features such as ABS and better rear lighting. I just practice those emergency stops and hope that when I do have to grind it to a halt I can. Hope this helps. JR

I could use advise from anyone who has wired up trailer lighting for there venture. I purchased an Aluma MCT motorcycle trailer that is wired with 5 pin. It is the standard motorcycle hook up with seperate brake/tail lights. I plan on installing the 5 pin female plug on the bike and tieing into the RSV wiring under the seat where the manufacturers plug is for the rear lights. Is anyone aware of a plug and play type adaptor available that you can plug into the existing plug under the seat to avoid splicing/soldering into the existing wires? Has anyone made up a bracket to attach the plug to the bike and if so where did you mount it? I thought about mounting it just to the left of the licence plate as it is up out of the dirt and water. Will the existing lighting fuse handle the additional LED lights on the trailer with out any problems? As always any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. JR

Thanks for all of the info on the "Ride on". A couple more questions. Has anyone had a problem cleaning the inside of the rim and bead when doing a tire change after using ride on? I read somewhere that someone had a problem as the ride on got all over the inside of the rim and it ended up being quite a chore getting it clean when replacing the tire. Also. Is this stuff sold anywhere other than on line. Thanks again. JR

I am about to replace both my tires with Avon Venoms. I have seen in different threads that some are using "Ride on" tire sealant. It appears to me that it could prevent an accident or at minimum prevent one from being stranded if the tire went down quickly. Has anyone had an experience with this product? Good or bad. Would you recommend it? Is it available at any stores or do you have to buy on line? Lots of questions I know. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks JR

I was wondering if anyone has purchased one of these covers from this company for their RSV. If so was it a good experience and good quality. It looks like a decent idea as it is compact. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks Jim http://www.tourkingcovers.com/shop/

I was thinking of installing one too. Do you think they would affect the tire balance and cause thinks to shake/shimmy?

Does anyone know of a website that shows substitute oil filters for a 2007 V star 1300. The yamaha part is 5DM-13440-00-00. I checked the Oil Filter cross reference on this site but didnt see any. ??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks JR

Snow is flying like crazy up here in Ontario Canada so I now have a some time to start planning for next years rides. We have been looking for a trailer for our RSV. I have corresponded with one of our members who has the Aluma MCT trailer. I have yet to see one but hope to soon now that I found a dealer in Canada. We saw a fibergalass trailer a few weeks ago made by a Canadian company called Trekker. It looks like a nice unit. I was wondering if anyone has a Trekker trailer or knows of someone who does? Any input on either trailer would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. JR http://www.thomasamerican.com/trailers_for_sale_inventory.asp?Category=MCT&TrailerType=All http://www.trekkertrailer.com/

Pure-One PL14612 vs PL14610 & fit?
Midnight replied to frogmaster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I was in Auto Advance and looked at the purolator 14610 and 14612. There are two filters. One is gold in color and the other is in white. The gold one says it is 99.5% efficient. I am assuming the gold one is the one to buy. It is around $6. Could someone confirm this. JR -
This is good news. My wife and I are leaving Monday to visit family in Va. and hope to ride the Parkway from Virginia down into NC. We have been hearing about fuel shortages. Has the fuel situation settled out? JR

Thanks for the help. Its sounding like it may be more hassle than it is worth. I will be caught up in approximately $500 more in taxes and fees. The trailer I am interested in is located in Iowa. The cost is approximately $1500. I attached the link. The fellow I have been communicating with on email didnt know about Canada DOT stuff or what was involved so that put it in my court. http://www.thomasamerican.com/trailers_for_sale_inventory.asp?Category=MCT&TrailerType=All We would probably pick it up when we were over in the states for a few weeks as I have family in Illinois. I was hoping to avoid all of the tax as I could declare it. If 2 of us are gone for more than a week to the states we can bring $750 each back. They may not allow it to happen with this purchase??? I had also hoped to tow it back and just put a trailer plate on it from one of my other trailers until I got it registered. Is that what you did? I suppose the worst that could happen is I would have to leave it at the border which is two hours away if it didnt go smoothly. Then jump through a bunch of hoops to get it back. What happens if you just declare it as nomal goods? Would I be able to register it here? Thanks again for your help. Jim

Looking for someone with experience with this. I am looking at buying a MCT trailer from a company in Iowa, pick it up hopefully with the bike and bring it back to Ontario Canada. Does anyone have experience with what happens at the Canadian border when I tow it in? Is it easy to register it in Ontario? Any advice is always appreciated. Jim

I am getting set up for trailering and looking for a hitch for my 2007 RSV. The Diamond R hitch looks like a good product. Is this a good choice? I am wondering if it is easy to remove the drawbar and when the drawbar is removed is the hitch essentially hidden. Any advice appreciated. Jim

Time for new tires. I need some advice.
Midnight replied to Midnight's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for the advice. I still need a bit more help. I've decided to go with the Venons from Southwest Moto. From what I can tell they offer two rear tires. 150/90VB-15 and 150/90HB-15. What is the difference between the V and H? Is it speed rating? Which one will wear better? There is only one option for the front. 150/80HB-16. Are these the ones to replace the D404's. I noticed on Avons website there are Venom and Venom-X. One is Bias the other Radial I think. Southwest does not offer Venom-X from what I can tell. Are the original Dunlop 404's I have bias or radial. Which one do I want for a 2007 Venture. Lots of questions I know. Thanks Jim -
I would like to get some input from our members as it is almost time to replace the tires on my 07 venture. The originals are on it. Dunlop D404's. I have 13000 miles on them now and will likely get another 1000 or so. This is my second bike. The V star I had before this had Dunlops D404's on it as well so I dont really have anything to compare to. I have read a number of threads and it seems that alot of members like the Avons. I also read that there are different types of Avon's that should be considered. So here are my questions. What are the advantages of the Avons over the Dunlops? Do the Avons tend to get more treadwear than the Dunlops? Which Avon is the best one to consider? Are there any other tire brands I should be considering? Where is a good place on line to purchase? Thanks in advance for your input. Jim

Don: Thanks. I have not looked for a replacement yet and was going to try to come up with a solution that didnt involve buying the whole kit. I just put a bolt in it for now (with some loctite on it). Would you be willing to part with the old one. I am not sure what is involved with re chroming but I dont think it would be a big deal once I found someone to do it. Regards Jim

A bit of advice from someone who learned the hard way. I have the saddle bag crash bars on my 2007 that were installed by the previous owner. One of the bolts holding the accessory bar to the existing side crash bar vibrated loose and fell out. The chrome cap it held on was lost along with the bolt. Went to yamaha to see if I could get the cap and bolt. It turns out that you cannot buy just the cap as the bars are an accessory and you have to buy the whole kit. Sooo. Use loctite on all the bolts or check regularily. Good luck. JR

I have been using Yamalube 20W40 in my 07 Venture. I know there are other options but I decided I would use it a least for the first few years in case I had any warranty issues. I went to the yamaha dealer the other day to pick up a gallon of oil for my next change. Apparently 20W40 is not available anymore. They now have 20W50 instead. I asked why they changed. Dealer was not sure. Anyways I have a few questions that I was hoping some of our members could comment on. 1) Does anyone know why they changed? 2) I have 2 litres of 20W40 left over. Can I mix it with the 20W50 on the next change? Thanks Jim

Thanks Bob, Brad and Ross. The pics really helped. I will come up with something now that I have seen what has worked for you guys. Jim

I was hoping some of you could share with me the best ways you have found to tie down your Venture. There are times I will have to put it in the back of my pickup. I have made a wheel chock that will sit in the front of the box to keep the front wheel in place. There seems to be no place to attach tie down straps that doesnt interfere with the fairing. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks JR

Thanks for all the info on the passing light laws. I installed them yesterday to be on all the time. It seems like the best way as we are always trying to be seen. I still have the switch to shut them off if need be. If the boys in blue challenge it I will deal with it then. Jim PS: I used the spacer that was recommended on this sight to allow for the fairing to be removed and installed without removing the lights. It worked perfect. Being a relative newby to the sight and a first time venture owner (since last fall) I have found the members to be very helpful. Thanks for all the help

I am installing passing lights. Does anyone know what the law is in Ontario Canada with regards to when they can be on. Ie; with hi beams on, low beams on or all the time. I would prefer all the time but dont want to get a ticket. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jim
